Amelia was found at a small rural shelter where she was scheduled for euthanasia. VGSR was able to bring her into rescue, and she was placed in a foster home. Two days later, the foster noticed something was wrong with her abdomen. She was rushed to an emergency vet, where X-rays revealed that Amelia was pregnant. In early October, Amelia gave birth to a healthy litter of puppies and has been a devoted, attentive mother. As her puppies prepare for adoption, Amelia is beginning the transition out of her mothering role. Amelia is a sensitive, thoughtful dog who takes time to feel secure with new people. She can be fearful in response to loud voices or sudden movements, suggesting a difficult past. Given space and patience, she gradually relaxes and shows her true self—affectionate, loyal, and happiest when close to her person. Once she trusts you, she will gladly become your shadow (and an enthusiastic 85-lb lap dog). She has already learned sit, down, and paw, is currently working on heel, and walks exceptionally well on leash. Amelia thrives with calm, respectful handling and does best with someone who understands that confidence develops over time, at the dog’s pace, not according to a training schedule set by people. Amelia will be spayed before becoming available for adoption. Approved adopters are welcome to reach out to her foster at operationhailey@gmail.com to learn more about her while she continues her recovery and transition. Please include her name in the subject line.
