Handsome Gus is as smart as he is photogenic!  Seven year old Gus came to VGSR with basic obedience training and crate training intact.  Since then he has been working with a professional and his fosters on refining his life skills to fit well into a quiet, adult-only household where he can receive lots of love, and attention to keep his smart brain and beautiful body active.

Although he is quite a looker, Gus is not just a pretty face.  He devotedly focuses closely on his human housemates and reads human activities well – Gus is a Velcro dog.   Always ready for fun, Gus eagerly anticipates his walks, exercise times and his training sessions, all of which take place several times a day to keep his bright mind active.   In between those sessions he relaxes quietly.  He enjoys a casual game of fetch but responds best to training games that involve treats – he is a huge fan of treats and learns/responds quickly and easily when a tasty morsel is involved.  We haven’t figured out where he keeps his time clock, but if he feels it’s time for fun he will bring a toy, drop it in your lap and sit looking politely expectant.  If it is not convenient for his human, his reaction is hilariously expressive – he flings himself to the floor with a huge sigh and a look of deep disappointment – and waits patiently.  His activity level is adaptable and he could do well in a household that offers just several walks a day or a home with walks and more intensive games/training activities.

Gus is completely housebroken and is reliable in the house alone.  Apparently, before coming into VGSR he was one of two dogs in a one-person household where the dogs spent considerable time at home alone in a busy townhouse complex.  Possibly because of his time at home with a lot of ambient or environmental stimulation, he has displayed some signs of reactive fear toward visitors to his foster’s house.  We are working on that issue and have had success in limiting his barking to appropriate alert-only response so he no longer barks at visitors once they have  been admitted into the home.  Gus is also not trustworthy with children and should not be exposed to children under 12-15 years old.

Given his focus on human interaction, it would be fine if Gus has a home where he can be the only dog and one or more adults can be available to him during the day for companionship and fun times.  He would be an ideal companion for someone who works from home – Gus is a great “break time” buddy! However, he has also lived companionably with other dogs and gets along well.   He has also lived with cats in the past.   He is an affectionate and loving dog who is ready for a home where adults want to enjoy a canine companion with a moderate activity level, who will learn everything quickly and return human love and affection ten times over.   Gus is a great dog!
