Update Nov. 4, 2013: Chewie has tested positive for heartworms. His appointment to be neutered has been postponed until his treatment has finished. Please keep him in your thoughts during his treatment. You may also make a donation in Chewie’s name to offset the expense of the heartworm treatment.

Meet Chewie! Although he is new to VGSR, here is what we know about him so far:

Chewie is a gorgeous dog that has experienced hardships in life. He was found as a stray in Petersburgh, Virginia. During his time as a stray, flies chewed off the tips of his ears and he became very underweight. Thankfully, his appetite noticeably increased once in foster care.

Chewie seems to do fine with other animals, including cats. There are no issues with shared space and he responds well to correction. As an intact male, he shows a great deal of interest in female dogs; however, his neuter is scheduled for October 30th.

We are currently working to improve his manners. He is learning to wait patiently for food and to walk properly on a leash. He is growing accustomed to spending the day in the crate, but is trusted to sleep through the night outside of the crate. Chewie will need a strong leader who can continue his basic training in his forever home.
