Stella is approximately 5 years old and, through no fault of her own, finds herself looking for a new home. She is an absolute sweetheart and very eager to please! She knows all the basic commands and is working on her leash walking. She is very smart and picks up on what you want from her right away! She gets along well with other dogs and likes their company, but is just as happy to sit at your feet and get a nice back- or belly-scratch! Stella will follow you everywhere just in case you need her help with something! We have not yet had the chance to have her interact with children, but based on her sweet disposition, we do not foresee any difficulties. She does, however, like to chase squirrels and other small animals, so a bit of caution when introducing her to cats is recommended. She is heartworm positive and currently undergoing treatment for it, but it is considered minor and she will be available for adoption soon! The treatment requires that her physical activity is somewhat restricted, which she takes very well, but we can tell that she is looking forward to being able to play with the other dogs to her heart’s content! So far Stella had only been posted on the “Special Needs” page due to her ongoing heartworm treatment, but this is now almost complete and she is ready for her fur-ever home!  In the few months that we have had the pleasure of fostering her, she has never ceased to amaze us.  Good with children and dogs, she displays the typical German Shepherd attributes: loyal, intelligent, calm, protective of her "“flock"”, aloof (until she gets to know you!).  In addition, she is very playful and extremely lovable and wants nothing more than to be with her family (human and canine)!  She would do best in a home that already has another dog (she currently lives with 2 male GSDs, and they both adore her).  She has learned to respect our parrots, but as she has a high prey drive, we would only recommend dog-savvy cats with her.  Once she has recovered from her last heartworm shots, Stella will once again attend adoption events in the Tidewater area.  Approved adopters, please contact your caseworkers for more information!
