Champ is a young boy who seems to have led a pretty bad life, up until his rescue from the Shelter. He was so frightened he wouldnt interact with other people who might be interested in adopting him, so they were going to euthanize him. A Rescue group who would take him and work with him was his only hope! He was okay with the Shelter personnel and did better with our representative, who took him to a quiet room at the facility. He relaxed immediately when taken away from all the noise and commotion of the other dogs barking. Since being in foster care, Champ has already made a great deal of progress. He attaches very quickly to his care-giver, and tries hard to behave, even though it is apparent he hasnt had much experience with training. At this point, he is somewhat wary of strangers entering the house, but I expect that to improve with practice. He knows sit and stay and his leash walking is coming along very well. He enjoys his walks and takes it slow and easy. A lot for this boy to catch up with in the great big scheme of things! He acts like he has been beaten, shying away from sudden movements and any use of hand signals. I think after some work and training, (as well as a lot of TLC!) he will make someone a great companion. He just needs to learn that no one will ever hurt him again. At first, he didnt show any interest in balls or doggie toys, but has now discovered how much fun they are! He really likes to fetch tennis balls, but not really sure about the returning part of the game. He was totally skin and bones, his hip bones and every rib showed prominently when he left the Shelter. Loves his food and acts like he has never been fed before. He is also very early heartworm positive, and has shown no symptoms of the disease, other than the blood test results. Therefore, his treatment will consist of a monthly dose of Heartgard. Every dog needs to be on preventatives anyway, so there wouldnt be any added expense for interested adopters. He will need a follow-up blood test in 1 year to make sure his treatment was successful. All dogs should be tested yearly, so again, no added cost or inconvenience to anyone. Champ wasnt sure about my female Greyhound at first, but after getting to know her, has decided she is okay! He is slowly warming up to playing with her and I will be working with meeting other dogs and children as he progresses. Champ was a very sad case but is now turning himself around in all aspects. He is really a very sweet boy who just needed that second chance with someone who will love him and take good care of him!
