It was going to be a wonderful day. I could hear them moving around in the next room but I was still curled up in my bed. The one right next to theirs. Any second Id hear my name being called and Id head toward the sound of the voice that I love so much. Breakfast would be ready by the time I finish a quick trip outside. Some people count on coffee and a donut to start the business of the day; me, I always have my ears scratched, warm hands to rub my sides and a kiss on the tip top of my head. Thats how it is where I live. I start every day the exact same way. And then I wake up. It never gets any easier. I keep hoping it will, but every time I open my eyes I remember that Im not in my own house. That when I reach the kitchen I wont find who Im looking for. Theres a nice lady there and shell scratch my ears and rub my sides and even kiss the tip top of my head. Shes trying to make me happy make me feel at home. But it doesnt work. This isnt home not my home. I see my real home in my dreams every night. Its just me and them, the one who loves me for who I am. The person who understands that I want nothing more than to spend my time quietly by their side. I dont care what we do, as long as its just us. I dont want to share them with other dogs and I dont want a bunch of people hanging around or running in and out. Just the two, or maybe three, of us. I cant quite see their face in my dreams. Theyre always just a little too far away or slipping around the corner before I get a good look. Its so frustrating! I hope one day Ill get a better look at them. I have to be sure Ill recognize them when we finally meet. I have to be sure theyll recognize me! Ive been waiting a long time. About Brandy: Until she came into the Rescue, Brandy spent her entire life with one person. She was much loved and cared for; however, she had little socialization. As a result she is very uncomfortable outside of familiar surroundings. This lack of confidence leaves her quite unresponsive around strangers and camouflages a charming personality. She is very slow to accept people, but once she does, a different dog emerges. She has a habit of redecorating for me so that I never know what Ill find when I come home from work. She may have pulled the bed from her kennel and dragged another into it; put one slipper in the dining room and the other in the office; tucked a sofa pillow into a corner of her kennel or all three. The items are unharmed, just not where I left them. Actually, Ive come to find this quite entertaining. She can be left freely in the house for the entire day with never an accident and, while always willing to go for a walk, is not a dog that needs a walk to be happy. A condo or apartment will suit her just as well as a house. She does not like most dogs, so a home where she can be the center of the universe would be ideal. Please check out our web site at www.shepherdrescue.org for more information about our dogs, our adoption process and to download an application. You must have a fully approved application on file prior to privately meeting our dogs. We do not have a facility, all our dogs are housed in private foster homes throughout MD/DC/VA areas. More information available on our web site, so please read through our web site before emailing questions, as it might save us both some time!
VGSR can only adopt dogs out in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area, no exceptions.
Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.
The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $250.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
