Meet sweet Anna, our diamond in the rough. Anna was picked up as a stray and never claimed by her owners. When we first met her she was covered in mud and very unhappy to be in the shelter. Anna has been kept outside her whole life and has had many litters of pups. As a result of being kept in bright sunlight she has developed a condition known as Pannus. This requires daily eye drops that will average about a dollar a day for the rest of her life. Her eye that was most effected by this disease looks 100% better since treatment has begun. She also has an ear infection that is probably related to food allergies. With the proper high quality diet her ears should get better in a couple of months. Anna has a wonderful temperament, but is a true Alpha female. She responds well to mild correction, but would enjoy being the only dog in the family. She loves walks, but since she is five years old her exercise needs are moderate. Anna has some anxiety problems and would do better in a home where the people are around most of the time. She has never used a flight of stairs, but she can do short sections without any trouble. She enjoys running back and forth between her foster parents, falling down at their feet for a belly rub, jumping up and doing it again. It is a joy to watch her run as it all seems very new to her. Most new situations make her a bit apprehensive, but like a good shepherd, she adapts and adjusts to her surroundings quickly. While not trained in obedience, she is a quick learner and will do anything for a treat! Anna is seeking a guardian angel to watch over her. VGSR can only adopt dogs out in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area, no exceptions.

Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $250.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
