Shiloh was recently surrendered to VGSR when her owner could no longer care for her. She's spayed, up-to-date on her shots and appears to be in good health. A one-word description of her would have to be 'exuberant". Shiloh likes people, and greeted us immediately with tail wags and hand-licks, and seems like she'll bond with her new family quickly. She was friendly towards adults and children of all sizes at her first Adoption Day. She wants to do what her people want of her, but doesn't quite know just what all of that is yet. She jumps a bit when her excitement level peaks, and she was a bit defensive and grumpy with some adult dogs upon initial meeting, but responded quickly and positively to mild corrections, and gave a look as if to say "oh I'm sorry, I didn't really mean to do that". Within a short time she settled down and was able to sit quietly in the middle of the group of other dogs. Shiloh is house-trained and she knows "come" and "sit". She pulls on the leash in her excitement to see the world all at once, but with a patient, consistent leader she'll learn good leash manners. She LOVES to ride in the car and is a very good passenger. Her owner told us that she rarely barks, even when the door bell rings, is extremely loyal, and loves to be with her people and snuggle up against your feet. Shiloh would do best in a family where she is not home alone during the day, and preferably with children aged 8+ due to her size and not being aware of her own strength. Most importantly, she needs a family that will give her the time, attention, training and consistent exercise she needs to be the great GSD that she wants to be. VGSR can only adopt dogs out in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area, no exceptions.

Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $250.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
