Layla is a 5-month-old German Shepherd with a big heart to match her size. She’s a sweet, affectionate “Velcro” pup who loves being close to her people—whether that’s curling up on the couch or snuggling in bed. She’s great with kids (best with school-aged and up) and has a gentle, loving personality.

Layla can be a little shy at first, especially around new dogs, but she warms up quickly. Her initial reactions are fear-based—she may retreat or give a quick warning—but with proper introductions and reassurance, she relaxes and happily runs and plays. She would do well with a confident, friendly dog sibling to help guide her, but she can also thrive as an only dog with continued socialization and confidence-building. She has had to be put in timeout several times because she herds during play and nips the butt of other dogs. This usually occurs when in groups of three or more.

She currently lives with a cat and free-range chickens and does okay with both. She is starting to be really curious about the cat but as long as you redirect her attention, no issues so far. Layla is starting to herd the chickens and still unsure about how she feels about them. She is supervised at all times while they are free-range. Overall, she is showing a medium prey drive.

Layla is potty trained and does best with a fenced yard, where she goes right away. She hasn’t quite figured out going on leash yet. She’s not destructive—she may pick up shoes or clothes but doesn’t chew them—and happily sticks to her toys.

She’s not a fan of being alone and can be a bit anxious when separated from her people, so she’ll do best in a home where someone is around most of the time or willing to help her build confidence gradually. She is not currently crate trained. She has no food aggression and is eager to please, making her a great candidate for continued training.

Layla is a loving, loyal pup who just needs a patient home to help her build confidence. In return, you’ll get a devoted companion who wants nothing more than to be by your side.

Layla is being fosted in Alexandria, VA. If interested, email Lynn at lynnkrolowitz02@gmail.com
