Foster homes are desperately needed NOW!!! Please consider opening your heart and your home to foster some really great dogs while they search for their "forever" homes.

About adopting a German Shepherd Dog...

Adopting a German Shepherd Dog via Virginia German Shepherd Rescue is a process that involves VGSR volunteers interviewing the prospective adopting individual or family to determine the conditions under which the potential new family member will be living. Questions can include things such as the working hours of the adopter(s), who will care for the dog, training, experience with GSD's in specific, age(s) of resident children, availability of a contained/safe yard, other animals in the house, etc. VGSR is not concerned with the lifestyle of the prospective adopter, per se, but is sincerely trying to find the best match of GSD to adopter and living circumstances. For example, we would not want to place a young, 100 pound, GSD with a person who would be unable to provide the GSD with the type of exercise and discipline it needs to be healthy and happy. Similarly, we would not want to place an aging GSD that has lived its life as the sole dog in a quiet home, with a family of children, knowing that this GSD has a need for quiet time. Nor would we want to place a GSD with separation anxiety in a home where the adopter is gone at work for long periods of time. Although VGSR carefully evaluates all dogs that it brings into the Rescue for suitability for adoption, we sometimes do not know a dog's history and can never predict the future behavior of any GSD (or any human!). Our goal is to place all GSDs that are accepted into our Rescue in loving homes in which the GSD and the family will thrive together.

The process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. Due to the fact that VGSR requires a home visit and face-to-face interviews with all potential adopters, we will accept applications only from those people who reside in the Virginia, Maryland, and DC areas. An application may be made at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR.

It should be stressed that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will from the web site or at an Adoption Day event and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgment as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria.

Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved. The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 (cash or check ONLY) processing fee. Sorry, PayPal can not be used for application fees or adoption-related donations. It is intended only for use for general donations or sponsorships. The applicant may submit an adoption application (with fee) at any adoption day or may mail a completed adoption application (with fee) to:

Virginia German Shepherd Rescue
Attn: Adoption Application
P.O. Box 126
Sterling, VA 20167
VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $250.00 (cash or check ONLY) minimum adoption donation to VGSR to help defray the costs of getting the dog fully vetted and ready to be adopted, and the adoption is completed. This donation requested doesn't even begin to cover the expenses that VGSR incurs to help dogs heal from illnesses and injuries that, given timely preventatives and proper care, are completely avoidable. Please visit our Info page for more details on the process of adoption from VGSR. Please also visit our German Shepherd Dog Shopper's Guide for more information on this wonderful breed.

Please come to our Adoption Days to meet our dogs. (Click here to be directed to our Current Events page to see the current schedule of Adoption Days.) All VGSR dogs are housed in private foster homes and as such are not available for spontaneous, unscheduled visits. For the security, privacy and safety of our volunteers and our dogs, private meetings will not be arranged until an applicant has been fully approved to adopt from VGSR.

Angel #8

Angel is a very sweet and loving white-and-cream-coated female estimated to be 2 years old. She is on the small side, stature-wise for a GSD and needs to put on some weight to cover up her ribs and back; just 50 lbs now. Otherwise, she is healthy, parasite free, and spayed (2/22/08). We have her on puppy food now and she is frisky and happy. She loves to have back scratches and belly rubs. She is a real people lover and is somewhat submissive without being timid. She is mouthy but does not bite or nip. She enjoys a game of tug, no matter who is on the other end. She holds her own with my two boys, Elwood and Jake, she does tell them when to step back, but is not aggressive. She is a flirt. After just a couple days here, they all play nicely together. She is interested in cats and will chase, if chase is started. She showed good rapport with Greta, a 6-year-old, female VGSR dog down the street and plays at the fence with the female Chihuahuas next door. She is crate-trained and okay on the leash, is alert and curious, but not a puller. When not distracted, she will sit and down and stay with some encouragement. When distracted, treats are helpful. She responds well to training and is eager to learn. She comes to her name and knows "No". She has some interesting traits including her run and her yodel bark which shows there may be some Whippet or similar sight hound in her background.

Anissa

"Nissa" came to us as an owner-surrender, mostly living indoors. She is incredibly gentle, follows you around, sits or stays by your side. A lick on your hand or face is to show how grateful she is. She loves our backyard and walks around in it, her nose in the air...boy, does it feel good to be outside! She is a bit overweight but we are working on that. Like a lot of pure-bred GSDs at this age, she has minor hip problems. “Go thin” is therefore her healthy motto. She does not seem to have interest in toys or fetch games but she loves a treat now and then and gives a paw. She did not get proper training but I got her to come, sit and down fairly easily. With practice she could do very well in that department. She aims to please you! She is an overall gentle soul, so although she does not know the leash rules, she is easy to walk and she clearly likes it. She loves to snuggle and get ear knuckles and belly rubs. Anissa likes to have her own spot to eat and does not like other dogs checking out her bowl or crate. With a spot of her own and after proper introduction Anissa has found her place in the foster home dog pack and gets along with all. She is fine with the cats in our foster home although her previous owners said she occasionally chased their cat. If you are looking for a gentle, loyal companion, preferably an only-dog family, Anissa may be the one. Please write if you are interested in meeting with Anissa: gsdmom78@gmail.com. RKaVA

Aslan

Aslan may be the size of a lamb, but he has the heart, and looks, of a lion. He is a mix of GSD and who-knows-what. This little guy was a starving stray from Tazewell County, VA. When he arrived at VGSR, he was suffering from a variety of parasites, which required him to spend 2 nights in the vet hospital. Now he's on the road to recovery. In spite of all his trials, he is an affectionate and friendly little fellow. He gets along well with most other dogs, is house-trained, and good in his crate. (He prefers a plastic varikennel to a wire crate. ) He seems to adore people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Cats are still unknown. We think he's about 3 years old, and will be neutered and updated on his shots as soon as he has gained some weight. He isn't interest in toys or balls, but prefers to hang out with his people and go wherever they go. He rides well in the car too. Aslan should be ready for his new family by the end of April. To learn more about Aslan, call Risa at 301-441-2461 or e-mail risa223@comcast.net if you have any questions. LRMD

Baby #6

Hi, my name is Baby. When I first came to my foster home, I was very sad, malnourished, and I had mange and heartworm. I was neglected for the beginning of my life, and I was only as good as the puppies my owner could sell. Fortunately I was taken away and now I am with a nice foster family and you can see one of my pups found a nice foster home too (see Kinsey). I was very malnourished and with the diet my foster family put me on, I am gaining weight and quickly gaining in my confidence. I love to go outside and lie on the deck or out in the yard, chase birds and squirrels, and I have shown that I am house-trained. I get along with all my foster brothers and sisters and I am even learning to play with them. I follow the treats into the crate, I stay in there quietly, and I have proven that I don't have to stay in there at all since I am perfectly behaved (even better than some of my foster siblings!) I am learning that they are going to keep giving me food and I don't try and get into the bowls before they feed me anymore; I wait patiently like a lady. I am waiting until we are clear of all my other ailments before I am spayed and I am not quite ready for a forever home yet, but watch my progress and soon I will be ready. ZPVA

Bella #7

Bella was picked up as a stray, so nothing is known about her past. Bella is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog, but in need of some manners. She is making progress with commands such as sit and down and each day walks better on a leash. She is still learning not to jump up when she’s excited. Bella loves to play with her foster sister, play fetch and chew on bones. Bella loves her crate and retreats to it quite often throughout the day. If you’re looking for a loveable companion, Bella is your girl!

Benny

Benny was a stray that was found malnourished, eating out of trash cans and with a broken femur. Despite the fact that he has every reason to be bitter, he is one of the sweetest most affectionate little guys I have ever seen. He has had surgery to fix the femur and is recovering nicely (he's put on almost 10 lbs.!) He gets along very well with our two GSD's and has started playing with them and with toys. At a distance he will growl a little bit at others dogs but once he is allowed to interact, he does very well. He has already won all of the staff of the therapy center where he is completing his therapy for his leg, and is rapidly learning to be a truly great dog. We have never seen him with children or cats but he has an exceptionally warm personality. Oh, and did I mention that he LOVES attention and chest scratches!!! CJVA

Candy's Pups

Hi. We are Candy's pups. We were turned in to the shelter during the first few weeks of our lives. We are shepherd mixes. Our mommy is a Black GSD Mix. We don't know who our daddy is. But, we do know that wonderful people have helped us out of the cold. We each have our own personality, but we are all very lively and we are definitely ALL puppy. We are not yet house-trained and we love to chew. My foster mommy gives me lots of things to chew and I have lots of other big dogs to play with here too. My foster mommy thinks its really cute when we attack her feet when she walks..but really shoes are the best to chew on, even if there are feet underneath!! We are already giving kisses and we are getting lots and lots of socialization with everyone coming over to pet us!! I think we are gonna have a puppy party soon, but if you want to meet any of us, you can just talk to anyone in the rescue (or your caseworker) and we can get together!!! We won't be available until the 5th of March to go to our forever homes, but we are all hoping we will have one by then. The pups are being fostered in Northern Virginia. DGVA

Duke #10

This handsome fellow and his sister, Princess #9, were turned in to a local shelter by their previous owners. He is very sweet and craves human attention. He loves to run and play with his sister and make puppy mischief when he can not. We think he might have been an outside dog and kept in an enclosure. He enjoys the freedom to romp around in a larger area. He is friendly to our own dogs. He seems very intelligent and we believe he would catch on to training easily. BKJVA

Duncan #2

Hi, my name is Duncan. I am a Shepherd mix but look very much like a pure-bred shepherd. I have black and tan coloring and think I am quite good looking. I am a six-year-old, neutered male. My birthdate is 04/08/2002. I am great with children and get along well with other dogs. What you should really know about me is that I love to play with anyone; two legged or four, who will play with me. Don’t tell anyone, but despite my 77 pound frame, I am scared of cats. I have quite a bit of energy and am very vocal about expressing my feelings. When Nancy adopted me in 2002, I had a bout with mange, but that was treated and I have not had a recurrence since. I am house-trained, crate-trained and leash-trained, and used to a fenced in yard. I have become bosom buddies with my pal Georgia, so I know my human friends are going to do everything possible to keep Georgia and me together.

Gazelle

Hi! My name is Gazelle, and I’m a friendly, petite little bundle of energy. I’m not quite all German Shepherd, but I think that just makes me extra special. I love to run like the wind with an occasional long graceful leap when I chase squirrels or my favorite soccer ball. Foster mom thinks I would make a great jogging partner or agility dog. I’m a very good girl inside the house and don’t bother anything that isn’t mine. Foster mom doesn’t like it very much though when I put my paws on the kitchen counter. I don’t see what the big deal is because I’m just trying to see what she’s doing and I never take anything. I’m curious about absolutely everything and will investigate thoroughly until all my questions have been answered. I love to play with my foster brother and go for long walks. Foster mom thinks my forever home should have another dog for me to play with. I can be a little shy sometimes so maybe another dog to mentor me would be nice. Do you think you might be my forever home? KBJVA

Georgia #2

Hello, this is Georgia. Actually, I respond much better to my nickname, “Pretty”. I am the matriarch of our pack at 9 years old. I was born on 12/08/98. I am spayed and I am a pure-bred German Shepherd. I think you will find my red and black coloring quite attractive. I am the smallest of the bunch but every part of my 62 pound body is full of love and affection. I am great with children. I too have a secret. Something happened in my past (before Nancy) and I get along fabulously with other male dogs but not with other female dogs. As sweet as I am, when I encounter another female dog, I don’t do well. The other thing you should know about me is that I love to chase things. I am not sure how I would do in a home with cats as I have never been exposed to them. I am in very good health and so much want to be house-mates with my forever buddy, Duncan. I am house-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained, and used to a fenced in yard.

Hans #2

My history has baffled everyone. I was rescued from a shelter when I was 4 months old, scared to death of everything. I've been in rescue for a long time, with a couple of visits to other homes but end up coming back to my foster home. Here is the thing, I'm a very, very nervous boy that does well with women, but no children. Men tend to frighten me, too. I've been looking for that special place to call my own, foster mom says that the right place is out there and will take time. My foster mom requests that anyone that might be interested in meeting me be at an adoption event event followed by several other meetings afterwards to gain my trust before she will let me to placed in another home. Holiday #2

Hi, I am Holiday. I am a mostly-black shepherd mix. I do have some tan on my legs. Someone said I am part Golden Retriever. I love playing with my sister, Magic, who is living with me. We have only been in foster care for a week, but our "Mom" says we are doing really well. I sleep through the night and am coming along very well with house-training. I even go to the door and bark to go outside. I am very smart, curious, active, outgoing, and friendly. I am learning to sit. I met the older puppy that lives here. She was fun to play with. The older dogs that live here think I am just too active. KJVA

Indigo

Indigo's story is that she appeared on a nice man's porch, out of the blue, and took up residence. He fed her and she decided to stay. Then she started to get protective of his porch and would bark when people walked by. Indigo DOES like to bark. She will bark her pretty head off at you, and you can walk right up to her and pet her while she is barking! But the good thing is that she will stop when you tell her to. She loves lounging in her crate and runs to hide in it when something scares her. Indy loves to go for walks and is a major sniffing machine. The only thing she likes better than walks is begging food from you when you are in the kitchen, cooking. She likes to play with Big Max (my other foster) and is a huge flirt with him. We think someone was mean to her, so we are looking for an especially kind and patient new family for her. SLVA

Isabelle

Isabelle is a beautiful, energetic adult female GSD or Belgian Malinois. She is a joyful, happy dog who "smiles" and has a perpetually wagging tail (yes, like a Lab tail!). She just graduated "first in her class" from a 9-week Basic Obedience course, where she demonstrated how intelligent she is and how quickly she learns things (Isabelle is a very, very smart dog). She is very well-behaved and now knows all kinds of obedience commands, such as "Sit," "Down," "Stand," "Stay," "Wait," "Come," "Let's Go," and many others. She is crate-trained, house-trained, and a real pleasure to have around the house. Isabelle is wonderful with children and adults of all ages, and she is happiest when someone is playing fetch with her -- she loves to chase toys and bring them back and will retrieve for hours. She also loves to go for long hikes in the woods, and she sticks very close even when off leash. Isabelle has a skin condition caused by allergies that will require care over the course of her life, but other than that she is a robustly healthy dog. She loves to snuggle and get belly rubs and petting, and she is agile and athletic and fun and eager to please. If you are looking for a sweet, delightful, exceptionally friendly dog who will greet and love everyone you know, please call Michelle in Rockville, Maryland, at 301-460-8894 to learn more about Isabelle. Jake #8

Jake is about 6 years young. He's a mixed breed shepherd with a thick coat and a stocky, sturdy, build, but classic shepherd facial features. He was given up by an owner who is now into breeding pitbulls for money. Jake was well-loved and well-treated, but not always cared for as he should have been. Jake loves people. Although he came from a rural area, Jake's first public outing was the PetExpo with thousands of people, and he had a great time meeting and greeting as many folks as possible. Jake is house-trained and has always lived indoors. He will also use a crate. Jake is a dog who would enjoy walks in public parks, and other social outings, as well as quiet times at home with his own people. Although Jake has probably never had any actual training, he's really pretty easy on the leash. He would be a rather "easy" dog to integrate into your home. Jake did not react upon meeting a cat face-to-face, but the prior owner reported that he would chase neighborhood cats outside when they would run. He seems to be good with children and the prior owner reported that he was. You can contact Jake's foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions or would like to meet this great dog. Jake #9

This big wonderful boy is Jake. He is 100+ lbs. of good natured sweetness. Jake is the sad product of a divorce where for some reason they weren't willing to fight over him, so they surrendered him to VGSR. We think he is worth fighting for! He is good with our very dominant female GSD, and happy to be with our small kids. He is house-trained, crate-ready, and generally terrific overall. He has a cute quirk, he will climb the 3 stairs into the backyard, but he will not go up or down the staircase inside our house. He watches you go up - you call him - he walks away and goes to lie down. Jake's specialty is affection; he doesn't play with toys or chew bones. He also enjoys long walks. We don't think he is all German Shepherd, our guess would be a mix with Labrador, which explains his easy going nature (except when it comes to a flight of stairs!) Approved adopters looking for a loving lounge lizard, contact Pam and Jeff Wilson at dogsalmosthome@yahoo.com. WJPMD

Jet

Hi! My name is Jet, and everybody says I feel like silk! I wonder why they didn't name me Silk. I guess that's kind of a girl's name. I'm not a girl. I'm a guy, but hear that I'm the sweetest German Shepherd in the world. They say I would be wonderful with children. I don't know what children are but I like everybody. Some times I'll chase the cat thing, but my Mom calls my name and I think she means for me to stop it. She told me I should learn to live with all the fuzzy things - even those squirrels. Doesn't matter - I haven't caught one yet. I'm nine months old and was given up to a shelter, but the nice folks at VGSR came and got me. I am gaining weight, but still have great big ears and real long legs as you can see by my pictures (when they get to the webmaster). I am fostered in Richmond but may drive up the Adoption Days now that the weather is nicer. If you especially want to see me, just email a friend of mine at robin3delano@yahoo.com, and we'll ride up there. She and my foster Mom say they don't come any sweeter or more beautiful than me. Aren't Moms embarrassing?

June

June came from a shelter in Roanoke where she was picked up as a stray. The vet estimated her to be 4-5 years old based on the condition of her teeth at the first visit. But the consensus of everyone else who sees her seems to that she's a bit younger. So 2-4 years might be a better guess. She is a sweet and gentle dog with a moderate energy level. She is good with children and takes a treat oh so gently from even the smallest child. Cats are still unknown but she shows no interest in the resident parrot or in chasing squirrels when outside. She has no desire to stray very far from her people and does well off leash with supervision, of course. She is doing well with house-training and has had no accidents while having free roam of the house at night. June doesn't jump up on the furniture or chew anything that doesn't belong to her. She will surf the kitchen counter for a tasty treat but we're working on this. June rides beautifully in the car and gets along great with other dogs. She's an easy girl to live with. KKVA

Kane #3

Kane is a highly intelligent young male GSD. If he thinks something is really fun, he can focus his attention on a single task for hours. He is learning boundaries and basic commands, but will need further training to keep his busy mind occupied. Kane is curious about everything and likes to learn all he can but doesn't take anything that's not given to him or get into things he shouldn't. He needs supervision and direction but is very easy to correct. Kane doesn't have a high prey drive, as evidenced by his curiosity but no pursuit of our ducks or any other small animal resident on our land. Kane will most likely be fine with kids but needs oversight and consistent direction with play objects/food. He is very affectionate and playful and a lot of fun to be around. He seems best suited with either someone with some experience handling GSDs or one who is well read and will go by the book along with a commitment to training. Kane is a wonderful companion and learns quickly. But he is too smart for his own good and needs proper guidance, consistent direction, discipline, and training to be his best. JBVA

Kinsey

Kinsey is now ready for the world! She's a very sweet little dog and would make anyone a great pet. She's not your typical hyper puppy. She's actually pretty calm and such a little lady. Kinsey will probably be on the smaller side of the GSD line. She is very smart and will learn things very quickly. And also as you can see quite the looker too. She's house-trained and she sleeps through the night. She loves to play with the dogs now and her confidence level has improved a lot. She's quite the little watch dog also. She'll definitely let you know when someone new is around. Come and meet her at an adoption day soon.

Kojak #2

Kojak is a sweet, beautiful dog. You could not ask for anything more in a companion. Kojak is affectionate - he wants to sit near you and get pats and give kisses. Kojak is gentle with small children and good with all other dogs. Kojak is a happy dog with a spring in his step who loves to go for walks in the woods and who walks so beautifully on the leash. Kojak is crate-trained and house-trained, and is well-mannered in every way. It is hard to believe that sweet Kojak had such a difficult path into the Rescue. Kojak was left abandoned in a house for several weeks and then spent another month in the shelter. As a result, Kojak lost a lot of weight and so we are working on getting him fattened up. Even though he is underweight, Kojak is a beautiful and happy dog. If you want to know more about Kojak, please e-mail Susan at run4stacatto@yahoo.com. LSMD

Lady #15

Hi, my name is Lady. I am a medium-sized, black-and-tan, female GSD. I am quiet and gentle indoors. I do well in a crate, but I prefer being close to a person. Outdoors I love to investigate everything and I have made friends with the other dogs in my foster home. I am a bit dominant with other dogs, but I am fitting in well with a few corrections. When I first came, I did not like the puppy that lives here, but now we are good friends. I am learning to live a house and behave very well. I know how to sit and down. I love to roll over for belly rubs. I pull a little on a lead, but I am learning to do better. I am very interested in the cat that lives here and want to chase it. When I came, I was in heat and was being treated for a small problem. I will be spayed in March. I am happy in a quiet home, and am getting used to being out with other dogs and people. I get very worried if there is a lot of noise or activity. My foster Mom is gradually taking me out to get me used to people and noises. I would do best in a calm home. KJVA

Lady #16

Lady is a real sweetheart and has a way of winning everyone's heart. She is very affectionate and likes to stick close to her people. She gets along well with the 4 big dogs in her foster family and quickly established herself as the alpha female of the group. She knows sit and is learning down and to come when called. She learns quickly and is eager to do as asked. She walks well on a leash but gets very excited over squirrels and birds and seems to have a high prey drive. She enjoys chewing on bones and retrieving a ball. Lady came without much muscle tone but she enjoys her walks and is getting stronger each day. She will do great in a home looking for a sweet, laid back shepherd. Lady is not very high energy and she is very easy to live with. She would do best in a home where she was the only dog or with another more submissive dog, as she likes to be in charge. She is a resource guarder of bones, her crate and any food around other dogs but she will gladly give her people whatever they want.

Lucas

Lucas is almost three years old. He's a neutered male, classic looking black and tan German Shepherd Dog. Lucas had some training as a puppy, but he became a fearful adolescent dog, presumably due to lack of socialization. He's a bit slow to trust people, but he's learning. He gets along well with other dogs and he should probably go to a home with a stable, more dominant dog, so that he doesn't feel the need to take control. He lived with a teenager in his prior home and is house-trained. He was surrendered to his current foster home because he developed the habit of chasing people out the door as they were leaving. However, he's more shy and fearful than anything else, so what he really needs is a calm, confident person that he can trust and depend upon. An all-adult household would be preferable for this guy. You can contact Lucas' foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. JBVA

Lucky #5

Hello, I'm Lucky. I'm the typical puppy full of energy with a touch of attitude to go with it. I love to chase my foster brothers around to try to catch their tails. For having just three legs I get around like a four-legged dog, too. I'm looking for a home that will teach me and work with me. I will be at many adoption events so please come get your puppy kiss. Lyka

Lyka is a very cute, affectionate, female GSD. She is extremely energetic and playful, with a lot of fun puppy love. Obedience training will allow her to channel her energy, as she doesn't know many commands, but is highly intelligent and eager to please. She does great off leash and responds immediately. She does not get along with other dogs, but loves children, and is unsure about other animals (cats, others). Lyka is a joy to be with. She is working through her anxiety to be comfortable alone, which will just need some time in adjusting to a new, good life and finding the right forever home. JBVA

Maggie #4
Photos coming soon...

If this dog had an Indian name it would be: "Maggie-Lots-A-Energy". Maggie wakes up in the morning ready for play. She's a very active pup. She plays hard with the other dogs and no dog is her enemy. Maggie is very smart and needs someone to channel her energy for the good. She'll definitely need some training. And she'll definitely need to be placed with someone who will keep her challenged. They will not be disappointed, she's a lovely dog and will make the right someone a great friend.

Magic

Hi, I am Magic. I am a mostly-black shepherd mix. I do have some tan on my legs. Someone said I am part Golden Retriever. My foster Mom says I really act like a German Shepherd. I love playing with my sister, Holiday, who is living with me. We have only been in foster care for a week, but our "Mom" says we are doing really well. I sleep through the night and am coming along very well with house-training. I am very smart, curious, active, outgoing, and friendly. I am learning to sit. I met the older puppy that lives here. She was fun to play with. The older dogs that live here think I am just too active. KJVA

Maximus #4

Maximus (who we call Big Max around here!) came to us to escape from neighborhood children who were extremely abusive to him, so it is understandable that kids make him nervous. It seems that a foster child and some kids next door put a leash on Max, who thought he was going for a walk, then they proceeded to chain him to a tree and beat the stuffing out of him with a metal baseball bat. As a result of the beating, most of his tail had to be amputated and his lower canine is broken. He is supposed to be all German lines, and he certainly looks like it. He is actually pretty good walking on a leash, but he can be reactive to other dogs and some people. He is getting better and better as we do more leash work. Once he trusts you, he leans against you and buries his head into your body for maximum contact. He takes treats very gently and is really good with the other dogs unless they try to steal his blue squeaky raccoon that he likes to carry around. (The raccoon will convey upon adoption!). I used him as a pillow during the Superbowl and he made an excellent cushion. We want to keep him safe, so he will require an experienced owner. But, I can promise you this, he is the dog of a lifetime. He is extremely handsome, highly intelligent, affectionate, protective and just an awesome, awesome fellow. SLVA

Mickey

Mickey is a spunky GSD mix (probably Collie) who loves to go for a ride and has great house manners. Yes, he's adorable, but don't let Mickey's cute face and calm demeanor fool you! He's very energetic and athletic for a 7-year-old, so he needs someone who can provide him with plenty of exercise, including lots of good-ol' fashioned 'structured' walking. After burning off some energy, he loves to burrow up next to you on the sofa or get his ears scratched and his belly rubbed. He knows SIT, STAY, SHAKE and we're working on DOWN, and is a quick learner with the right treats which he takes very gently from your hand. Mickey does have some separation anxiety so he needs to be in a household where there's someone home most of the day. He gets along fine with most dogs and although he has tested fine with cats, he does have a strong prey drive and will give chase if chase is given. Mickey's a fun-loving dog who will bring a happy energy to his new family! KBVA

Oliver

Hi, I’m Oliver but my friends call me Ollie. I’m a great guy who was turned in to the shelter by my owner who no longer wanted me. I think I’m a good boy and didn’t deserve that, but thanks to VGSR, I’m now looking forward to finding a forever home. I love to run and play with all the other dogs at my foster home, and I even share my food sometimes. I’ll roll right over so you can rub my belly because that’s one of my favorite things in the whole world. I love to chase tennis balls but I don’t bring them back because I think my human should have fun chasing tennis balls, too. I’ll give you kisses and then just to show you how much I love you, I’ll very gently nibble on your chin or nose too. I’m very vocal and if you ask me I’ll tell you all about my day in great detail. I also like to ride in the car and I hope that one day soon I’ll go for a ride to my new home where I can happily live forever. HDVA

Princess #9

This beautiful girl and her brother, Duke #9, were turned in to a local shelter by their previous owners. She is a very sweet, sensitive and loving girl. She loves to run and play with her brother, but also enjoys quiet time away from him just being talked to and petted. We think she might have been an outside dog as a soft bed inside seemed to surprise her. She is friendly walking with our own dogs, but we haven’t let her romp with them in a play group just yet. Rin

Rin came into the rescue emaciated and suffering from severe pneumonia. His lungs were almost completely full of fluid and he was near death. His coat was extremely dry and allergies caused an over production of skin cells. All of his health problems were a result of lack of proper nutrition and care from his previous home. He is eating Wellness Core Dog Food it is grain-free. Due to his past skin problems he will need to continue on this diet. Today his coat is awesome due to diet. Despite a past life of neglect, Rin is the sweetest boy. He really should have been named Mr. Happy Go Lucky! He is great with other dogs, people and children. He captures every person’s heart he meets. He is shy at first, but within minutes becomes a social butterfly. He will need a home with lots of love and will keep him the same happy socialized boy. He would be an excellent Therapy Dog. He has the perfect temperament for this type of job. If you are looking for a great boy and have a great home, please let his foster mom know. Samantha #3

Currently Unavailable

Samantha is a really happy young girl despite having elbow dysplasia. When Sam was growing, her right front ulna didn't form properly and now she has a ununited anconeal process (UAP). Basically her bones didn't attach properly and now her elbow is unstable which causes irritation and her to have a limp after exercise. Because this wasn't caught sooner she now also has degenerative arthritis in that elbow. Good news is that with surgery we can fix the UAP and with proper medication we can slow down the arthritis so she can be running around and playing like she so wants to do. She will most likely need to be on medication for the rest of her life. Please help Samantha get healthy. Her surgery will be expensive, so we are calling upon all of you kind souls to help us out by making a donation toward Samantha's vet expenses. Please remember that your donations are tax-deductible. Samantha and her two and four-legged friends greatly appreciate any help you can give because they all are waiting for the day they can run around and play together again. You can contact Samantha’s foster home at muraenidae@verizon.net if you have any questions or want an update on her. LMVA

Shey

Anyone for WWF and NASCAR? Shey is a happy, personable, smart 2-year-old mix who is polite and well-mannered inside, but is a dynamo outside. He needs plenty of exercise and would make a good jogging buddy. He does have separation anxiety and must be crated when you are not home. However, he likes his crate and will go in upon command. Shey has shown only a fleeting interest in children and doesn’t appear to bond with them. He seems as if he is a 1-2 person dog. Shey would really like a canine wrestle buddy and one he can race around a fenced yard with and investigate everything. He barks a lot outside (mostly at birds), but this is improving with training. Shey is always happy—he is an impish, personable character. Even when I discipline him he is happy (who? Moi? He says) Shey doesn’t shed much (maybe because he is a mix) and is not afraid of thunderstorms. At night he sleeps by my bed on a soft pillow that he appreciates. He is being fostered in the Shenandoah Valley. Contact joyce4gsd@yahoo.com to meet this neat guy. RJVA

Taz #4

Taz is a 6-year-old, male GSD given up to the shelter - his owner was moving to an apartment. He likes other dogs, licks my kids of all ages and is loving and affectionate. He is a big strong dog. He knows leash manners when you insist that he know them. We have had Taz in rescue since 6/2007. Poor Taz. He came to us underweight, intact, ear infections, his coat in horrible condition and sores with missing hair down all his legs and his belly. The first thing we did was address his skin. This involved antibiotics, medicated baths, and a massive food change. We changed Taz over the Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato. His sores started to heal and he put on weight. He has gained approximately 25 lbs., and he now has hair and a rich full coat. So, he clearly has food allergies. Next we had him altered. Oh my, what a horrible time he had healing from that, poor boy!!!! We had hoped that Taz's ears would heal up once the allergies and skin conditions were under control. They did somewhat, but not totally. He still appears to be in pain just when you touch his ear. We went on weeks of antibiotics and cleansers. They got better but never healed. Taz is now seeing a specialist for his ears. He has been diagnosed with pseudonomas. We are currently again on antibiotics and other medications that look like they are helping, but have not totally solved the problem yet. If we cannot solve this, then Taz will have to have his inner ear canal removed in order to stop the pain and get rid of the bacteria. Poor Taz was supposedly surrendered because the owners were moving into an apartment. It seems that they could not handle his medical issues. Taz has already produced over $2,000 in bills and it looks like he will need to keep getting specialized medical care for a while yet to come. Please help us with Taz's medical bills. He deserves a better chance at a life with his ears intact and a life free of pain. Help us continue to help Taz. DGVA

Tess #4

Can you believe it - my friend, Dixie, the 11-year-old Dalmatian, found a home and I am still looking for one. Who would have guessed it? I was very happy in my original adoptive home, and my mom loved me very much, but then she went to the Rainbow Bridge and I ended up back with VGSR. I don't know why I have not been adopted yet - I like to play with other dogs, and will roll over for a good belly rub. I am a good girl in the house and I never chew anything that dogs are not supposed to chew. They tell me that I am "very house-trained" - whatever that means! It might be my bark, which is a little high-pitched for a GSD (think about how Lassie sounds instead!) but I'll be doggone if I know why I am still in foster care. I am an excellent alarm when anyone comes to the door, but I am friendly to all that I meet. C'mon - gimme a chance! SLVA

Zoe #4

This little girl originally came from a shelter in Christiansburg, VA. She has a beautifully-marked chest and face with piercing gold eyes. Zoe absolutely enjoys being part of my dog pack and loves to play, play, play with her foster brothers and sister. She is quite interested in my cats and sometimes chases them, but not always. She's been smacked on the nose a few times by the cats and is learning to respect her new kitty friends. Zoe is an especially shy and timid girl. She is afraid of almost everything except for other dogs. She is quite timid around people, but does not growl or bite. I am working on socializing her and exposing her to as many new situations and people as possible. She is coming along well. She's definitely in the puppy stage - into everything. Anything left lying around is fair game for puppy teeth. Zoe would do best in a home with another dog and/or kids. She needs a forever family that has the time, energy and especially patience to train her and to help her come out of her shell. She is definitely a fun dog once she gets to know you. I've had Zoe for almost a month now and have been better able to assess her personality and needs. In order to make her transition to her forever family less stressful and permanent, this is what I require for her: I will only place her in a home with l or more dogs. The home needs to have a fenced yard (no invisible fence, please). Children in the family need to be older (around 9 years old and up). SSuVA.
