VGSR's Adopted German Shepherd Dogs, M-O

Updated on Saturday, 04/12/2008

Mack

Adopted!

Mack is a large German Shepherd Dog with a beautiful, rich, thick black/tan/red coat. He was one of 18 dogs given up to a rural county shelter by an irresponsible owner. In spite of this, he is a very affectionate and loving dog. His favorite activity seems to be sitting by your side while you brush his coat. Mack is approximately 5-6 years old, close to 100 pounds, and gets along well with other dogs. He is very much a people-dog, and will become quickly attached to his new human companion. Mack will sit on command and is responding very well to leash training. He is really very easy to handle in spite of his size. He is currently being fostered in Central Virginia.

Mack #2

Adopted!

Mack is about 1 year old, approximately 55 pounds, neutered male, and mostly Shepherd. He is a quick learner, highly motivated to please, and is very smart. Mack is house-trained and well-behaved indoors. He walks nicely on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs and hasn't paid much attention to cats that he's seen. Mack has lived with a child and seems good with both children and adults. He is sometimes scared of some men, but his reaction is to simply back away when he is unsure. Mack has a good alert bark but is generally quiet. He is fine with being crated and could be happy in most living situations provided that you have the time and desire to give him the love and attention that he needs. You can contact Mack's foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions or would like to meet this wonderful dog. Mack is being fostered near Charlottesville, VA, but will attend most VGSR adoption events in Gainesville and Sterling. JBVA
Adopted: 11/17/07.

Maco

Adopted!

Maco is an absolutely gorgeous, black-and-cream , AKC-registered, male GSD. He previously spent all of his time at the end of a chain and was turned in to animal control because he didn't bark enough. He has been an absolute joy to have around and although never lived inside before, is house-trained and crate-trained. He has fantastic manners and doesn't jump on people, counter-surf or beg. He is learning basic obedience as well as how to walk on a leash. He loves to be outside and has tons of energy. He would be a great jogging partner or companion for someone with an active lifestyle. He would do best in a home with GSD experience as he is basically a 70 lb. puppy who needs socialization. He will need someone who is firm and assertive, yet gentle and loving. Maco is one of the sweetest, most affectionate dogs you will ever meet and will make a wonderful addition to one lucky family! BMVA
Adopted: 03/23/07.

Macon

Adopted!

Macon is a beautiful black and tan male GSD that was picked up as a stray down south. He was pretty thin and needed to be treated for heartworm. His treatment is now complete and he been adding weight and muscle. He is up to date on all his shots. He is extremely strong and very playful now that he is feeling better. He's about 12 to 18 months old and is just learning about living with a family. He is extremely energetic and wants to be entertained. He gets along well with new dogs as soon as they understand that he is the boss. Macon is house-trained. He loves all kinds of chew toys and squeaky toys. So far Macon has not wanted to be left alone but he will spend short intervals in the crate. He just wants to be where the action is all the time. Macon is being fostered in southern Virginia. Macon will need a family with GSD experience. If you want a dog that is loyal and will follow you everywhere, Macon is your boy.

Macy

Adopted!

Macy is a real beauty, with warm chocolate eyes and a VERY loving personality. She has lots of puppy energy and puppy appetite to match. She plays well with people and dogs, but she has not been cat tested. She also really likes balls and is learning to fetch and sit. Macy weighs 45 lbs., and is about 8 months old. We believe her to be part Doberman (hence the beautiful red legs and shorter coat), so we don't believe she'll get much bigger than this convenient size. She is housebroken, spayed, and up to date on shots. She is also willing to be crated at night, but will chew on her bedding in protest. She will need a little basic obedience but she is very intelligent and has general good manners. She likes to nibble on the fingers and toes of people she especially loves, and pounces on her playmates, so we don't recommend her for a home with extremely young children. Macy is currently being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Madeline

Adopted!

My name is Madeline, and I love being part of a family. My favorite times are when the whole family is hanging out together. I am a homebody, although I like to take walks, run and play with my owners. I have very good house manners and I love every person that comes to visit me. I am gentle and I don't jump, lick, or bark unless someone knocks on the door. I am very tolerant of children, even babies. The cat that lives here is another story - she makes me very anxious. I can tolerate other dogs, although I am not interested in them and would prefer if they left me alone. At night I like to sleep in mom and dad's room or in the hallway where I can keep an eye on the baby's bedroom door, too. I am timid in new situations and tile floor makes me nervous, but once I'm at home I am fine. I have been with my current family for 3 years, but they can't keep me anymore. I would love to bond with you and make you my new family. Will you please take me home?

Madesse

Adopted!

Sweet Madesse is a 3-year old, black and tan, spayed female. She is a very pretty, well-behaved girl who truly appreciates the comfort of home. Madesse was kept outside but through the grace of a kind neighbor she was taken into rescue. She is a smaller Shepherd and weighs about 52 lbs. She is up-to-date on all her shots and is already spayed. She is very healthy and is housebroken. She is fine in a crate, but is so well-behaved that she does not need to be in one. Madesse has earned the privilege of being loose in the house day and night. She knows how to sit and stay, and is eager to learn more. She needs to learn to heel on lead, but is learning at least not to pull. She loves children and gets along well with the other dogs in the house. She is such a good girl that she does not even chase the cats. She enjoys sleeping in her special chair. She is hesitant to go outside without her foster mom, but once she is out, she loves to run and play. She would do wonderfully well in a house with children where she could build her self-confidence surrounded by people who adore her.

Maddie #2

Adopted!

Maddie is a beautiful, petite girl that was rescued from a shelter where she was brought in as a stray. The day after arriving at the shelter, Maddie had a litter of puppies and the entire family was rescued by VGSR. Unfortunately, the puppies did not survive, however Maddie has been examined by the vet and declared to be in good health. She also seems to be in good spirits (thankfully), and is such a good girl. She loves to be petted and will snuggle right up to you, and if you sit down, you may just find yourself with a 47 pound lap dog! Speaking of pounds, she does need to put on a few after having the puppies just 2 weeks ago. With a few more good meals (she likes a bit of canned food mixed in with her dry), we think she'll begin to fill out and will complete the transformation from beautiful to GORGEOUS! Her pictures do not do her justice - she is much prettier in person! She walks very well on a leash with just a little bit of exploratory pulling on occasion, but for the most part will stay right with you, even sitting when you stop walking. Her favorite things seem to be being petted/cuddled, going for walks and playing with her toys. She also rides very well in the car, and so far has not had a house-training accident yet. She really is a wonderful little girl and is very attentive to her foster family, especially her foster mom. She likes to go for walks with our 8-year-old daughter and play with toys with her, but she does enjoy just calm, family time. Maddie will be spayed the first week of July, and will then begin being introduced to other dogs, cats etc. She will be attending adoption events in Gainesville. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting, please email her foster family at savingshepherds@yahoo.com. She would be a wonderful addition to a caring family. SAMVA

Maddy

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Maddy. I am new to Virgina German Shepherd Rescue. I weigh around 65 pounds, and I just turned one year old. I have already been spayed and I am up-to-date on all of my vaccinations. I am crate-trained AND house-trained. If I hear a strange noise, I will bark to let you know that something is going on. I am all black with a little white on my chest. I get along with cats, other dogs and children, too. I love to ride in a car and play ball. My foster mom will keep you updated as she gets to know me a little better. I am being fostered in Maryland. You can e-mail Patti406@lycos.com VGSR Tag #1135, EPMD

Madison #2

Adopted!

What a great girl! Madison was surrendered to the Fauquier SPCA because her owner no longer had time for her, which is good for her because now she gets lots of exercise and interaction with people and other dogs. In the short time she's been in VGSR, she's been nothing but a sweet, quiet, patient girl. Madison walks very well on-leash, comes when called, rides well in a car and sleeps through the night without a sound and although she's not too fond of hardwood floors, she's slowly getting used to them. She's completely healthy so don't let her age fool you. Any family would be lucky to have Madison in their lives! KBVA
Adopted: 03/04/07.

Madison #3

Adopted!

Meet Madison! Madison is current on her shots, spayed, and will be 1 year old on January 11, 2008. She probably weighs 80 lbs. Her pedigree is full of West German working dogs. She is house-trained and crate-trained, and has had some basic obedience training. She likes other dogs, but I think that she may need to go to a cat-free home, with people who are fairly active. She would be good as a running companion, and I think she'd be great at agility. She needs to go to a home where there is a dog of similar size to play with her. She does well with my two and she needs to burn off some of that energy. She is not cut out to be an only dog. She needs a doggie companion who can stand up to her rough and tumble ways. Feel free to e-mail her foster mom at risa223@comcast.net for more information. LRMD

Maggie #2

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Maggie. Everyone has seen my picture on the VGSR web site with my 11 puppies. They now have gone to their new homes and are doing great. I weigh 98 lbs., and am housebroken. I love children and other dogs, but I am not sure about cats. I am crate-trained. I sit, lie down, and come on command. I also love to go for car rides. I walk on a leash very well. My foster mom and the people that came to see my puppies thought that I was a very sweet girl, and I am. I am 3 years old, and love to play. I know that there is someone that would love to have a sweet girl like me.

Maggie's Pups

Adopted!

Hi, we are Maggie #2's puppies at the age of 3 weeks and 5 days old. Six of the female puppies weigh 6lbs., and one female puppy weigh 7lbs. Two of the boys weigh 7lbs., and the other weighs 6.5 lbs. All of us are doing wonderfully! We are now eating puppy food, and sometimes mom's milk. Since we have been cutting teeth, mom does not like that so much. We play together, run, and also trying to bark. Our foster mom has been has been trying to get a real nice picture of us, because we are now 3 weeks and 5 days old. It is tough to get all of nurse together. Boy, does our foster mom have her hands full. You will see our little sister Angel, and she is the only one that our foster mom named, we are very hard to tell apart. Angel will have a picture of herself. She is the runt and was born with three legs, but you would never know by the way she gets around!

Maggie #3

Adopted!

Maggie is a sweet and gentle 5-6 year old girl that loves to play fetch all day long if you have the time and energy. She is good with big/bigger dogs like other German Shepherds and her foster dad's shepherd/lab mix, but not always good with small dogs. There are no cats in her foster home, so we don't know how she is with cats. She is house-trained and walks well on a leash. Maggie knows how to: Sit, Stay, Come and sometimes heel. She is a very sweet girl once she gets to know you and will follow you whereever you go. Maggie is currently getting treated for heartworm and the vet thinks she will pull through it just fine. HEVA
Adopted: 04/19/04.

Maggie Mae

Adopted!

Please don't overlook me or judge me because I am a mix!! Maggie Mae is a 3-4 year-old, spayed, female GSD mix from rural West Virginia. She's a good girl who gets along well with most other dogs (doesn't appreciate being bossed around), seems to love gentle children, and is CAT FRIENDLY! She rides well in the car, and is a very calm dog. She may be mixed with another breed, as her tail often curls over her back. Maggie has been overlooked because she is a mixed breed, but she is a gentle and loving soul who would be a very easy fit in most homes. If you are an approved adopter, and are interested in meeting her or finding out more information about Maggie Mae, please contact barbie@shepherdrescue.org for more information. DBMD
Adopted: 09/17/06.

Maggy

Adopted!

Maggy is black/brown with a dark back. Her muzzle is black. I have a 4 mo. old shepherd/sharpei mix and she jumps on the rescue dog which annoys her and so she growls, for this reason we keep them separate but I think she would do fine around adult dogs. She is wonderful to my wife, 2yr old daughter and me. She has good manners and listens very well. She can at least sit and come and loves to play fetch with a ball or stick. She is not aggressive and seems in good health. Not sure on the heartworms, the vet didn't do an exam; just a quick check.

Mako

Adopted!

Mako is a 73 lb., floppy-eared, but very handsome, Black-Red-Tan male GSD, about two years old. Mako is wonderful in the house, he is house-trained and is very well behaved. He is also crate-trained; all you have to do is say, "Mako, crate," and he will go right into it. He is very submissive to his handler and at the same time very protective of his owner. He is the type of dog that would give his life for his owner. He is a big, but very sweet boy who does great with teenagers but is not good with toddlers. He knows the sit command. A 4 foot fence is no obstacle for him, but he will not run away. He will come to the front door and wait to be let in. He is a great car traveler and loves to go for rides. He is great with female dogs, including little ones, but does not like big males, specially if they are not neutered.

Malcolm

Adopted!

Malcolm is a mature, (7-year-old?) German Shepherd Dog. He is a big boy, weighing in at almost 95 pounds. He appears to be house-trained, gets along well with other dogs, and is very friendly and affectionate with people. If you have any questions about Malcolm, you may contact his foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com. JBVA

Mandy

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Mandy. I'm a five-year-old, soon-to-be spayed female. I'm mostly German Shepherd, but my face and my paws look like my other part is Golden Retriever. I'm a little underweight but my foster is working on that. I haven't been playing with people or other dogs but I'm starting to relax after all this moving around from the shelter. I am a very quiet and sweet dog. I walk very well on the leash. I need to get spayed and to add a few pounds, and then I will be ready to be your new best friend. I am being fostered in Northern Virginia. SBVA
Adopted: 03/31/05.

Mandy #2

Adopted!

Mandy is a beautiful, loving, 1-year-old girl who was stray in D.C. She is a lover! Given an opportunity, she will sit in your lap and give you kisses all over. Her shelter notes praise her affection and receptiveness to humans. After only one day in foster care, she has bonded with foster mom and gained a rapport with the resident female GSD. She understands a firm "No!" and responds with contrite apologies. She appears to be kitty-friendly. When her attempt to sniff my cat was met with a hiss, she politely backed off and respected the cat's distance. My guess is that she was house pet - her fur is beautiful, she is a good weight, perhaps slightly on the heavy side. She was spayed at the shelter and appears to be completely healthy. She immediately claimed a nylabone as hers, and was comfortable settling in on the loveseat. Although clearly primarily GSD, she may have some other heritage as well. At sixty pounds, she is a bit small, but she's full of life, love, curiosity and vigor! She is a little scared sometimes, but even the first night we were frequently treated to the "whhmp, whhmp, whhmp" sound of a GSD tail whacking the wall. She needs some human companionship to help her blossom into the wonderful dog she is aching to be. During her three weeks at the shelter, she received regular human interaction. Every note about her praises her. Her only downfall is that she is a puppy! As such, she does like to chew, but was willing to switch from my slippers to a kong when offered. Also, she has some mouthing tendencies. However, she is extremely sensitive to any suggestion that she is hurting a person. The notes from the shelter suggest the mouthing worsened during her shelter stay, and I expect that she will improve rapidly with appropriate attention. Plus, did I mention how beautiful she is? With facial markings typical of a black-and-tan and fur close to a brindle color, she is a beauty. Her right ear frequently stands at 3/4 mast, giving her a quizzical look. If you would like to learn more about this sweet beauty, contact VGSR, or e-mail foster mom directly at kmonster@comcast.net. SEVA

Mandy #3

Adopted!

Mandy is an approximately 3-year-old, spayed female that is great with other dogs and even cats. She's very friendly to everyone and everything she meets. She is calm in the house, and is very much a cuddler. Outside she likes to play with her doggie foster siblings. Mandy is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccines, and ready for a new home that will show her lots of love, attention. She would benefit from obedience training. She is also a very crafty escape artist, and is capable of climbing a five foot fence. Approved adopters may contact her foster mom at AdoptMandy@aol.com for more information. DBMD

Manny

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Manny. I am a handsome black-and-silver, young German Shepherd Dog. I am very friendly and love pets and hugs even more than food. My foster Mom says I have a tremendous temperament. I love being outdoors. I also love to run and play with my foster sisters. I am learning to sit and know to come when called. I am learning to jump in and out of a car without help. My foster Mom is using something called “clicker” training. That is lots of fun and I love meatball treats. Right now I am a bit thin, but I am trying to gain some weight.

She wants to be part of a loving family.

Mardi and Gras

Adopted!

Some homeless and ownerless GSDs from New Orleans have made their way into our Rescue. We have been asked to assist the rescue effort by taking them into VGSR and finding forever homes for them. Mardi and Gras arrived in our Rescue in September thin and emaciated. They survived Hurricane Katrina and were found swimming together for their lives when they were rescued. They were skinny, weak and hungry....but, they are very, very sweet. They are currently in foster care together and are looking for a "forever" home. Since they survived the disaster together, we would very much like to adopt them out together so that they can live forever together. Gras is about three years old, she has had all her shots and is now spayed. Please look into your hearts and see if there is a way that you can offer these dogs a loving "forever" home together or donate generously to VGSR to help cover the Veterinarian expenses to get these dogs back to health. DHVA
Adopted: 03/26/06.

Marquise

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Marquise. Aren't I one handsome guy?! I had some cuts and scrapes on my hindquarters when I was picked up by the shelter but everyone has taken such good care of me that not only are my cuts and scrapes mostly healed but my hair has grown back almost all the way, too. I was feeling kind of sad that no one wanted me and that I didn't have a forever home, however everyone here in my new foster home tells me what a good boy I am and keeps reassuring me that I will find a permanent loving forever home very soon. Could you be my forever home?? Let me tell you a little about myself. I love to go for car rides but I do request that the window be at least a little cracked (boy do I love that fresh air). I love long walks and playing ball at the park. I'm pretty good on a leash but sometimes I get excited and you have to remind me not to pull. I also love hanging out with my canine roommates and friends. I know basic commands and would love it if someone would teach me more! In the house, I'm a fairly mellow guy. I do like to snuggle and when possible I prefer to be close to my humans. I don't have accidents in the house and I don't chew on things that aren't mine. Don't I sound like a great dog?! If you think you may be the perfect forever home for me, please come meet me at a Northern Virginia adoption event. HEVA

Marshal

Adopted!

The Marshal is in town! Meet Marshal Dillon - he is of good moral character, friendly to all he meets and, if necessary, he will keep peace in the town. Marshal is probably between two and three years old, and once he fills in he will probably weigh around 75 to 80 lbs. He gets along great with other dogs, likes to ride in the car and is fairly quiet for a German Shepherd. He is house-trained and fine loose in the house while you are at work - although he is not above stealing a roll of toilet paper and running off with it! Marshal is a very friendly dog and likes to sprawl across your legs for maximum body contact when you pet him. SLVA
Adopted: 08/09/05.

Marta

Adopted!

Poor Marta. Marta ended up as a stray dog, like so many other dogs we see. However, unlike many of those other dogs, Marta is chunky, happy, and already spayed. Somebody at some point recently loved this girl enough to keep her well-fed, and otherwise well cared-for, but didn't care enough to go looking for her when she ended up in the shelter. Marta is house-trained, crate-trained, up-to-date on her vaccines, and ready for a new loving home. She is estimated to be 7-8 years old, and is currently about 15 lbs. overweight. She's in foster care with other dogs (both male and female), and cats, and no doubt would do well with children (although it's important to remember she is a BIG girl, and might accidentally knock a small child over). She rides well in the car. Marta is an easy dog to have around and would fit well into most homes. She would probably do best if not placed in a home with a dominant female. Approved adopters may contact barbie@shepherdrescue.org for more information about Marta. DBMD.

Marty

Adopted!

This is our special boy, Marty. We don't think he is a pure-bred German Shepherd, but he is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. Marty is very friendly to all, enjoys the company of other dogs and is even very nonchalant about the feline persuasion. He is around 1 1/2 years old, house-trained, rides great in the car and loves to take trips to the dog park. He is a good boy loose in the house while you are at work so he does not need to be crated. He was scheduled to be euthanized in an overcrowded shelter on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, so that is how he acquired his name. Marty has been one of the easiest dogs that I have ever had the pleasure of fostering. He does have one bad habit that we are working on - when he first greets you he will put your hand or forearm in his mouth (typical puppy mouthing). So, for that reason, no young kids for this sweet fellow. He is being fostered in Northern Virginia. SLVA
Adopted: 03/11/05.

Mary

Adopted!

Poor little Miss Mary was trapped in a junkyard in rural SW Virginia with quite a few other German Shepherd mixes. She has not been shown much kindness in her life so far, which has left her leery of people she does not know (which is why she had to be trapped). Gradually she is warming up to petting and hugs from her foster mom and dad. No doubt Mary had probably never been in a house prior to coming under VGSR's wing. She is currently being crate-trained. As fearful as she is of humans, she is very much a "team player" with other dogs, and even does well with cats. Surprisingly she also rides well in the car! Due to Mary's nature, her adoptive home must be quiet in nature and patient while she learns to trust new people. Mary will never be the sort of dog that can be trusted off-leash, as she would very quickly revert to her "wild" nature and run for cover if frightened. But Mary deserves a second chance and the opportunity to understand that there are good people out there in the world. Won't you consider her? Approved adopters may contact her foster mom by e-mail at AdoptMary@aol.com for more information. DBMD

Mary Lou

Adopted!

Well, hello Mary Lou, good-bye heart, sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you. I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part, so hello Mary Lou, good-bye heart! Mary Lou is so incredibly friendly that her tail starts wagging when she sees people walking a block away. She walks very nicely on a leash, has wonderful manners and is very pleased with her fine self when she hops up on the couch. If you have ever considered getting a dog to do therapy dog work, this is your perfect opportunity. She rides well in the car too! SLVA

Mason

Adopted!

Although Mason's original owner paid a lot of money for him, he did not spend a lot of time with him. He is an extremely handsome, bi-colored, male GSD. He is VERY nicely put together and appears to be well bred. Mason is just under two years old, neutered, friendly to all he meets, house-trained, and even appeared to be totally nonchalant toward a cat staring at him through a glass door. He is not at all barky - he was even quiet at the kennel when other dogs walked right by him. He gets along just fine with some (but not large) dogs and likes to play fetch with enthusiasm. He has his AKC papers and also has a microchip. He is currently bunking at a kennel in Chantilly. SLVA
Adopted: 10/28/04.

Mattie

Adopted!

Mattie is a beautiful-inside-and-out GSD in Virginia Beach. She is around 6-7 years old, and the perfect home Champion. Mattie's Daddy had to move into an apartment that told him her little brother could stay but she was too big and had to go. Grandparents have taken her in for a few weeks. Miss Mattie is well mannered, affectionate, good on a leash and knows her basic commands. She has lived with children as young as seven and plays beautifully with them. Mattie's favorite toys are footballs and rope toys. She loves to be groomed, ride in the car, and snuggles whenever invited. She gives kisses too! Mattie will capture your heart.

Mattie #2

Adopted!

Graceful, slender, athletic and affectionate - all in one package, that comes with a pedigree too! Sweet Mattie is looking for a family to call her own. She is OK (although a little intimidated) with other dogs, very sweet with people and I am guessing will be OK with a cat. She moves beautifully and it is a pleasure to watch her run. She is a well-mannered, well-behaved lady who is still a little shell shocked at having lost the home she had since she was a puppy. SLVA

Maverick

Adopted!

Maverick is a long and lanky pup, BUT still underweight. He's putting on the pounds though and will be a stunning dog once he's filled out. He's been pretty sick from his stay in the shelter BUT that too is getting better. He'll be neutered soon and ready to find his forever home. He does well in crowds, but is very interested in all the dogs he passes. Maverick is a typical pup who loves his peoples' attention. Sometimes he nibbles at your toes but he doesn't mean any harm. He's learning to wake me up at night if he needs to go out. He still has an occasional accident in the house. As he feels better he's learning how to romp and play with the other dogs. I don't know if he'd be good with a cat or not. LTVA

Max #1

Adopted!

Max #1 is a purebred, black and red, 3 1/2 year old GSD. He is very friendly, LOVES to chase balls, knows his basic commands, and is a very handsome fellow. He is a good size, probably about 85 to 90 lbs., a beautiful dog with a very happy-go-lucky disposition. Max is housebroken and has been raised with a toddler. Max and Morgan have been raised together, but they came from different breeders. They were originally purchased to breed together, but plans have changed due to a divorce in the family.

Max #2

Adopted!

Max #2 is a gorgeous, long coated, purebred male GSD. He LOVES people and craves attention. He is trained to sit, shake, lie down and is good on a leash. He is very clean, does not slobber and has never had an accident in the house. Max would do well with a submissive female dog. He is a big boy, somewhere around 90 to 100 lbs. He does well with his foster mom's toddlers but because he is so large and playful he tends to occasionally knock them down. For that reason, he would do best with older children. He is up-to-date on shots and on heartworm preventative.

Max #3

Adopted!

Max #3 is a 10 month old fellow who will be quite a big boy when he's fully grown. Max likes to play with other dogs, but needs to learn better socialization skills. He's very powerful and needs someone with the ability and willingness to manage him as he learns better skills. He has a very sweet personality, and loves people and most other dogs, but we're unsure about cats at this time. His bark sounds ferocious, but he's just asking to have some play time.

Max #4

Adopted!

Meet the handsome Mr. Max (#4). He is a large young male GSD who weighs about 85 lbs and he has already been neutered. Max has been a housepet and has been raised with older kids. This dog has been loved by his family and has never been mistreated. Since he is housebroken and does not chew, he will not need to be crated. He is a friendly guy but he does need to brush up on his manners. He learns quickly and is very responsive when you work with him. He would do best in an environment with older children and adults.

Max #6

Adopted!

I am a new guy whose name is Max. I am around 1.5 years old. I am housebroken and crate trained. I'm not a barker unless I hear noise that I am not familiar with. I sit, jump-up, and stay when told to. I love other dogs, expecially my brother, Charlie. I love to run, jog, play with my tennis ball, play tug with my rope toy. I love children and love to take car rides. I'm up-to-date on all shots, and neutered. I'm not sure about cats yet. My foster mom is still learning things that I like to do with my brother, Charlie. I'm a young guy that learns new things very quickly. I am very close to my older brother, and it would be nice if we could find a home that would take us together! We know that there is a Shepherd lover out there that would love to have both of us. You will not reqret taking both of us. You will see my brother, Charlie's, picture above.

Max #7

Adopted!

Max #7 is a special boy. After traveling cross country from California, he was abandoned by his family. It seems Max was specially trained as a service dog. He is only 2 years old, very friendly and in need of a permanent home. He is afraid of cats but likes other dogs. Max is a purebred, long-haired German Shepherd that is drop-dead gorgeous, and with the sweetest personality.

Max #8

Adopted!

Max is a 6-year-old male GSD that weighs about 90 lbs. He's house-trained and has never chewed/destroyed anything in our house. He also knows basic commands such as heel, sit, stay, etc. He's a very quiet dog, never barks unless a stranger is at the door (he won't bark at people he knows) and usually just lies in front of a window or door so he can look out of. He's crate-trained and loves his crate so much that he even spends time in it when we're home. We just leave the door to his crate open for him all day. He's a very friendly dog, however he has shown some aggression towards some men. He's never bitten anyone, just nipped them as a warning. He's good with our one-year-old son, but has never been around any other kids. In fact, he's extremely protective of our son and won't let any strangers near him. He's good with cats as long as they're indoors, but likes to chase them when outdoors. He's good with other dogs, however he prefers smaller dogs. I think he gets intimidated by the bigger ones. He gets walked twice a day (morning and evening), which seems to be sufficient for him. He likes sitting out in the sun sometimes, but we don't let him out when it's too hot. He doesn't bark when he wants to come back inside, he just comes and sits at the door. Regarding his meals, he gets a large milk bone in the morning and then one scoop of food in the evening around 5 pm. He doesn't get very many treats since he's got a very sensitive stomach, so it's important not to switch his food (Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult Dog Food, it's the dark blue bag). He's up-to-date on all his shots and exams.
Adopted: 09/30/06.

Max #11

Adopted!

Max is a very handsome, 85 lb. 3yr old sable GSD living in the Virginia Beach Area. He loves his family's children and all those that come through the front door to play. He currently lives in an invisible fence and knows all his boundaries. He is mature and quite a gentleman. His family are heartbroken to give him up but forced to when a neighbors visitor teased him so much about crossing the fence he bit him when the young man crossed too far into his yard. Of course it is Max (?!) fault. So to keep the peace they are surrendering him. Our trainer evaluated him and can only say he is a GREAT dog and has no aggression at all. He was protecting his family home and that's all. I would welcome Max into any family with children.

Max #12

Adopted!

Hello, I'm Max (#12). I'm a beautiful, classic black-and-tan GSD seeking an active forever home. I am 70 lbs. of pure energy. I love long walks and runs. My favorite pastime is playing ball. ANY type of ball will do. I am about 1.5 years old, house-trained, and I love all people. I have other dogs at my foster home and we love to play together. I can stay in the same room with cats, but watch them closely for chasing purposes, so I probably shouldn't have cats in my forever home. I love kids, but sometimes when I get too excited I still jump up on people. This scares little kids. I am working on my manners. I am crate-trained, but my foster mom doesn't really use the crate much. I would be a great working/agility dog. I love to please. I already know some little tricks, but I would love to learn more. The more I do, the happier I am. Max is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Max #13

Adopted!

Max 13 is lucky number 13. Lucky because his former owners got divorced and he will end up with a new and better home as a result. Max 13 is only about 5 years old. The gray on his face makes him look older, but it really just adds character. He and Jake came from a home in the country, and had been exclusively outside dogs but they do well when confined inside at night. Max is very friendly, responsive to his human, and loves to lean up against you. He is pretty easy on the leash; instead of dragging you along, he sticks to you like glue and sometimes even tries to walk between your legs. He is a medium-sized GSD (about 65 lbs), and has a nice soft, smooth coat, not as long as many GSDs. Max was wonderful with children at his first adoption event, and gives wonderful kisses. He is not much of a barker. He is current on shots, and is heartworm negative. Max is being fostered in the Charlottesville, area but will come to Northern Virginia adoption events. He travels well! Contact his foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com for more information.

Max #14

Adopted!

Max is an 8-year-old, pure-bred German Shepherd that has lived his entire life so far with the same family until recently. Max is very well behaved, knows many commands, walks well on a leash, and of course is house-trained. He is great with other dogs, cats, and children. He immediately took to my pack of 3 dogs and now runs/plays with them all day long. Max loves companionship and very rarely leaves my side where ever I might be on my property. (He keeps his distance of a few feet and never gets in my face like some of my other dogs.) He does bond with men over women and would do best in a home where the male is usually home as I believe he is still somewhat traumatized from losing his family from the past 8 years. Max is being fostered in the Shenandoah Valley. RDVA Adopted: 05/15/05.

Max #15

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Max, and I'm a 4-year-old, neutered, male GSD. I was surrendered to a local shelter after my elderly owner could not care for me any longer. I'm living with other dogs and even cats, and get along well with everyone. Sometimes I get a burst of playfulness, but most of the time, I just like to run around or hang out and watch the youngsters wrestle - I am more people-oriented than dog-oriented. I am a large dog (85 solid pounds), and not a dog for the "faint of heart". I have a strong body and stubborn mind, and never was taught to use either one to my fullest potential. I need structure and obedience, someone who has experience with large dogs, and someone who is able to take control would be ideal. I like to think that I can be in control. Because I am so strong, and occasionally nippy, I am not well-suited to a home with small children and will not be placed with any. I'm very confused at what's happened to me in the last few weeks, and it might take me a little while to settle into a new home, but if you'll give me tough love and patience, I will be a devoted companion. Oh yeah, and you will get a big laugh at me when you see me chasing my tail! DBMD

Adopted!

Hi!! My name is Max. I am 4 years old and I weight about 87 pounds. Everyone who meets me says that I am a very sweet boy. I love to walk and play with balls. I also like to play with my foster brother. I really love being with my foster parents, though. I love my people. I am quite the lover, my foster mom says. I do not like loud noises, like thunderstorms. I really want my own family....could that be you? DGVA

Max #18

Adopted!

Yeah, I know what you're thinking - another "Max"? So my prior owner didn't have much imagination - I hope you won't hold it against me. And let me tell you, I am not just another pretty face! I'm a 3-4-year-old, neutered, male, long-coated boy. I am fairly good with other dogs and I have been GREAT around my foster mom's kitties. I was turned in to the shelter because I guard my territory a little TOO well - I can be very demonstrative. You see, I was found on the docks of a marina on the eastern shore about 6 months ago, and lived on a boat, and would bark at passersby. Those owners decided they couldn't/wouldn't train me to be a better behaved dog or neuter me, and decided to turn me in to one of the worst shelters in Maryland (as far as euthansia rates). Luckily VGSR sprung me in the nick of time - it was literally hours before I was slated to be euthanized, but I'm OK now. I'd like a new owner that will take the time to work with me on a daily basis to teach me when it is OK to bark at strangers and when it is not. Since I have no problem using my voice, I would probably not be a good dog for an apartment or a townhome. I am neutered, up-to-date on my vaccines, and healthy. My vet says my hips appear to be *very* well seated in their joints (Max probably will not have a problem with hip dysplasia as he gets older). I am crate trained at my foster mom's house, and am probably house-trained, since I lived on a boat. If you've got the time to work with me to be a better dog, I would love you forever. Please contact my foster mom at barbie@shepherdrescue.org. DBMD

Max #20

Adopted!

Max is a gentle, 5-year-old, male German Shepherd Dog who has been a country dog for his entire life. His owners surrendered him to the shelter with the comment that he is an escape artist. While true, it is obvious that he has had insufficient attention paid him. He knows the basic obedience commands and responds to "come", "sit" and to his name, all evidence that someone worked with him. But he lives to please, and relishes attention. That said, he will not cling nor be under foot at all times. He is happy to be near you. With an 18-month-old in the house, he is careful not to bump or play roughly, but walks carefully around and watches over her. He is very friendly towards all people, and is at ease among dogs and cats, and made no fuss with the dog-of-the-house upon his arrival. His country background lends itself to his love of getting out to run and explore. He is high energy when outside exploring, but is very calm around the house. He appears somewhat cautious about playing but enjoys the attention, and he is putting on some well-needed weight while getting plenty of exercise in his foster home. This boy will be/is the quintessential family dog with his good nature, great people and animal attitudeneeds love and attention and 'lots of exercise. He is a wonderful dog. Max #21

Adopted!

Max's story is sad like most: his owners' house burned down and they gave their two dogs and two cats to the shelter. His playmate was adopted last week and the shelter caretakers were afraid that Max would get depressed without his buddy...not a chance! Max is as happy as can be! This good looking boy is alert, energetic, smiles a lot and will flip over for anyone whom he thinks will give him a belly rub. (NOT guard dog material.) He loves having other dogs to play with but would also do well without dogs as he just loves having someone around and will bond to anyone quickly, I believe. He's most likely mixed with Lab judging by his appearance but has no interest in retrieving or toys at all. He walks well on a leash and doesn't jump up on furniture, but he does get excited when he gets attention so he would do better in a family with no kids or older kids. Max will making his first "public" appearance this Sunday, January 22nd at the Warrenton PetCo, so c'mon out and see the smile he has for you! KBVA

Max #22

Adopted!

Max #22 somewhat resembles a deer - he is tall, leggy, slender and can jump like a kangaroo. He is one of the friendliest GSDs around and wants EVERYONE to pet him. He likes to play with balls, toys and wrestle other dogs. His funniest quirk is that he loves to get in the shower with you. So unless you want a dog IN the shower with you, you must latch the bathroom door. He actually comes running full speed when he hears you turn on the shower. He loves to cuddle and will try to fit his long, lanky body in your lap if he possibly can. He will need to live in a single family home because he sings for about 30 seconds whenever anyone leaves the house. His howl brings you visions of "Call of the Wild". SLVA

Max #26

Adopted!

Max is a sweet - perfect - easy dog! That about sums it up. Max is sweet with everyone and everything. He loves to get his attention and pats. He will look at you with his soft, gentle eyes and nuzzle and carefully kiss your hand. He is good with other dogs and is great with cats and gentle enough for small children. Max is beta and will not challenge anyone or anything. Yet he is happy and go lucky and has a joie de vivre. He loves his walks and milk bone treats and spending time with the family. Max is also very very attractive - he has a healthy black coat that is offset beautifully by his cream accents. Max would be good for anyone willing to love him as much as he will love you. Max #27

Adopted!

"How do you spell wonderful? We spell it “MAX.” Max, a 19-month-old, long-haired GSD, has an incredible disposition. We can’t say enough good things about this handsome boy. Max is a “leaner” who just wants to be close to and please his humans. He gets along well with his foster canine sister and has a happy greeting for the people he meets. This skinny boy came to VGSR after his previous owner turned him in to a shelter because he was being deployed. Max came to us significantly underweight. After extensive testing, we just found out that Max has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). EPI isn't bad, it just means that Max needs to have supplemental enzymes with his food and stay on a low fat diet. Donations to VGSR to help cover the cost of Max’s diagnostic lab work would be gratefully accepted. Hopefully, he will now gain weight and continue to grow to the large boy he should be. He is a very active dog and has a high ball drive. His humans tire of throwing balls and sticks long before Max wears out. While Max is house-trained in the strict definition, we’ve been working on improving his house manners. He will “counter surf” looking for food or interesting toys (Max’s head easily reaches the kitchen counter tops), if he is given any opportunity and also seems to enjoy recycling used paper products from the trash can (read that chewing paper goods or playing keep away with them). Max is food-driven but not food-aggressive. He takes his treats gently. Max is a very smart GSD who is learning his basic commands and needs an active home where his lessons will be continued. Because of his size and his puppy-like behavior (he is still mouthy), Max is looking for an active loving forever home with no small children. He is being fostered in Northern Virginia. KHVA

Max Spencer

Adopted!

Max is a gorgeous 8-month-old with the most beautiful face. He will be a big boy when he's done growning. He is house- and crate-trained. Max is super-sweet, very playful and full of energy. He absolutely LOVES to play with toys and will need a home where there are tons of them, otherwise he will chew on things he is not supposed to. He loves to fetch and play tug. He is a very confident little guy who seems to not be afraid of anything. He is great with other dogs. Max needs a home where they can understand the energy of a young GSD.

Max vom Brandonhaus

Adopted!

Max Vom Brandonhaus, affectionately known as Max, is a gorgeous long-haired black-and-red GSD. He is an easy-going, well-behaved, 4-1/2-year-old. Max, an owner surrender, has adjusted from being an outside dog to living inside with ease. He is happy, sweet and moderately obedient (he needs some work in this area, but this will certainly improve with additional attention). He has not had a lot of experience on a leash. He loves people and will snuggle with you, given the opportunity. He gets along well with his foster sister, also a GSD, but seems to prefer human attention; he is delighted to have his head scratched and belly rubbed. Max is still learning about toys, but enjoys playing ball. Max needs to put on a little more weight. Max is up-to-date on his shots and has been neutered. He is available for adoption. He is being fostered in Northern Virginia. KHVA

Maxie

Adopted!

EXPERIENCED GSD OWNERS ONLY. Max is a 1-1/2-year-old neutered male who is extremely loving and eager-to-please. He has a strong protective streak, however, and needs an alpha figure who can gently keep him in line. With his current foster mom, he's happy and safe at the dog park, on crowded streets, and at parties. But without a strong and observant alpha, Max could easily decide that it's his responsibility to alert on people who he distrusts. Max loves children and plays well with other dogs, but needs a home without cats. He's house-trained, has basic obedience, and is crated when left alone. Maxie #2

Adopted!

Beautiful and intelligent Maxie is a really big puppy. He's about a year old and a long, thin 65 pounds. Though he knows his basic obedience, he's really bouncy and he'd always rather be in someone's lap. Despite his size, Max is great with kids. He's slightly dominant, but loves to romp and wrestle with other dogs. He doesn't play well with cats, however, and needs a home without them. E-mail claire@talkingwithdogs.com for more information.

Maxine

Adopted!

Who wants to adopt the dog that could easily be the next upcoming Frisbee champion. Maxine has got what it takes. She can catch high throws, bad throws, and her ability to predict wind shear and trajectory is absolutely amazing. She runs light-speed to catch the Frisbee and then rockets back to you, drops it on your feet and barks at you to throw it again. No lie, she is one of the best Frisbee dogs I have ever met. On top to that, she is affectionate (loves to cuddle) and gets along with dogs that don't hassle her, cats and little kids. She knows quite a few commands and hand signals too. She is a bit shy at first and it takes her a couple of minutes to warm up to you. But once she does, you WILL get kisses galore. She is being fostered in western Loudoun County. For more information, please email contact@shepherdrescue.org. Act quickly - this little gem will get adopted at warp speed!

Maxmillian

Adopted!

Maxmillian Vom Wilder Lago was born April 23, 1995 and his parents are Lago Vom Glockenstreit and Ary Nieder Vom Feimster Haus. Max is registered with the American Kennel Club. We purchased Max when he was eight weeks old. He has always been well cared for in a loving home. When he was twelve weeks old I began taking him to work with me since I did not like the idea of leaving him home alone all day. As a result of this coming to work each day, Max became extremely socialized. People in the town of Purcellville "adopted" Maxie through constant contact with him. He loved the attention he received from his "fans". At times entire families would come to the store just to see Max. They would be frustrated and disappointed if he was not there. Max never had "issues" even with small children. He could be trusted with the smallest child or any adult. Often customers would bring their own animals into the store. Max got along with just about every dog who came for a visit. He never attacked nor became aggressive with another animal. In all the years I have owned Max he has never bitten anyone or any critter. He is a gentle animal best described by one customer as a "gentleman". Even with these qualities Max is still a wonderful watch dog. At home he will bark loudly at anyone who comes around. Because of his size and protective nature he keeps people "honest". Max is a perfect blend of a socialized German Shepherd who knows just what his role is. At his current stage of life Max has put on weight and moves slower than he used to. He eats one can of Science Diet Senior food a day mixed in with dried food. Sometimes he will get bits of a hot dog or pork chop that our small dog gets when they are fed once each day in the evening. Max has his current shots and has been tended to over the years by Dr. Stang, a veterinarian at Loudoun Veterinary Clinic in Purcellville, Virginia. Max has no hip dysplasia. He is currently living in Purcellville VA.
Adopted: 07/22/04.

Maximus #2

Adopted!

Maximus is about 9 months of age, and a beautiful black, red and tan GSD. He is a happy boy full of kisses and lots of healthy curiosity. He does a great GSD head tilt with new sounds or faces. Maximus is learning to sit. He is house-trained, crate-trained and learning his "kitchen" manners, too. He would love a home with school age children, or maybe another dog to play with, as long as they aren't too bossy. Maximus is being fostered in Virginia Beach. Have room in your home for this sweet little man?

Maximus von Faust

Adopted!

A Gentle Giant! Yep, that's him. While he seems extremely shy, he only takes about 30 minutes to warm up and give you a tail wag or 2! He adores Carolena, the test kid (no test needed), tolerates Beemer the cocker and desperately wants to play with my 3 year old shepherd, Lexus! Right now we have to keep him somewhat quiet as he was just altered, but I have a feeling that once he is able to run (without wincing in pain), he will have a blast playing with other dogs. He appears to walk well on a leash and even did heel, sit and stay with a total stranger, and he is crate trained. The jury is still out on whether he's housebroken, but if he is not, he appears to be a quick learner. This guy is a love bug that only needs someone he can call his own forever and ever!

Maxx

Adopted!

Maxx is new to the rescue so we are still learning about him. What we do know is that he is one BIG Teddy Bear who would follow you around the world and back. He seems to get along fine with other dogs, but wants to give the cat a chase. He is very well behaved in the house, but uneasy when you go out without him. He is a very loyal dog and doesn't seem to want to wander. We will update as we get to know him better. THVA

Maya

Adopted!

Maya is a stunning, black-and-red, long-haired, German Shepherd that was recently taken into our rescue along with Cleo, her daughter. Maya is four years young. Maya has probably never lived in a house, but seems to enjoy her warm surroundings. She slept peacefully in her crate overnight, but is raring to go, and has a LOT of unbridled energy during the day. My guess, is that with adequate exercise, she'd settle nicely in the house, however since she was just spayed, she cannot run and play as she wishes for a couple weeks. Maya appears to get along fine with other dogs, but should probably go to a home without kitties. Maya is a very good traveler in the car. Maya and her daughter would enjoy being placed together, but do not have to be. Act now - these stunning dogs won't be around for long!!

Maya #2

Adopted!

Hi!!! My name is Maya. My foster mom says that I am the prettiest GS ever!! She says that I am very sweet girl, too. I like to play with other dogs and I love playing with kids. I really, really LOVE my ball. Playing ball is THE BEST. I am still a puppy, only 10 mos old. I am house-trained. I am also crate trained, but I prefer to run about the house. I still am in my chewing phase and a litte mouthy still, but not too bad. I know a few basic commands, but I really could use some obedience training. What I would really like it a forever home with lots of love and lots of fun. I live with my foster mom in Northern Virginia. DGVA

Maya #4

Adopted!

Maya is a sweet, sable-colored female German Shepherd. She was confiscated by Animal Control when her owners were charged with animal cruelty. Maya, her mate and all of her eight puppies were all cramped in a wooden box in the backyard. They had no food or water Maya was in the worst condition, extremely emaciated. At a mere 48 lbs., she was near death from starvation and suffered a severe respiratory infection. At first Maya was very leery and scared when she came into her foster home. Never having lived indoors, having constant food and water was very foreign. She didn't know how to play with toys. When she was given two stuffed toys, she walked around with them for days. It was like she perceived them as her puppies and was making sure they were safe. Maya, we are happy to say, is doing great today. She has gained considerable weight, no longer has a respiratory infection, and loves to play with her foster brothers and sister. She no longer sleeps in a crate. She prefers to sleep next to her foster brother Ranger. But she does well in her crate when her foster parents are not home. She knows sit, stay, is house-trained, and is a beautiful GSD. Being pampered at her foster home, Maya has a few requests of a new forever home. She would like to be treated with lots of love and affection. She would like a nice comfy warm bed, lots of stuffed toys, and does have a preference of Merrick Canned Food mixed with her dry food. She does love to lie on the couch next to her foster dad but also loves to run and play in the back yard. Her foster brother, Ranger, is her best friend. They are non-stop wrestling and playing. An energetic brother or sister would be great. Please let us know if you have the home Maya is seeking and feel free to email her foster mom at dianedz@gmail.com if you have any questions. DDVA

McGraw

Adopted!

This little guy is McGraw. At 5 months old, he is very much still a puppy. VGSR found him in an animal shelter where he had been picked up as a stray. When he ran out of time, VGSR quickly placed him in a foster home. He may be a pure-bred shepherd, and is 100% adorable. He greets everyone with a huge, friendly kiss and a big wag. McGraw is learning house and crate training at his foster home. Between lessons he plays with his foster brother. A young guy like this will need a home where someone is home a lot to help him grow up with proper guidance. McGraw is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Meeka

Adopted!

This pretty girl is Meeka. She's 11 months old and full of herself! Of course, she is just a puppy. When she was very young, she was crated way too much and did not get any excercise, so she doesn't have much muscle mass in her hips and legs, and is somewhat underweight due to malnourishment. Meeka likes people, other dogs and kids are okay too, but she's not quite sure what to think about cats yet. She is still learning to walk on a leash, but does come when called and will sit on command. She loves to run and play ball, and is house-trained. Meeka is a very sweet and lovable dog who is always full of kisses. But, she will need a forever home with someone special who will understand and work with her hip issues. If you're willing to give this little girl a chance, please email tazi54@aol.com for more information.
Adopted: 07/24/07.

Mel

Adopted!

Mel is a handsome, 2 year old black & tan purebred male shepherd. He is a very good boy and generous with kisses. Mel needs a home where he can gain some confidence. It seems someone mistreated this sweet boy. He is only about 65 pounds and will not be a big boy. Mel is neutered and up to date on all shots. He is ready to join your family. (The WebWeasel thinks that Mel will really blossom with someone with a gentle hand and plenty of praise.)

Mel #2

Adopted!

Over the last three weeks, Mel has gone from acting like a wolverine around the food bowl, to a well-mannered young lady who knows how to politely wait for her turn when we are handing out treats. She is house-trained, affectionate, and is just now starting to figure out how to play with toys and other dogs. Mel is the sweetest little creature that you would ever want to meet. Who needs a cuddlebug to help keep them warm this winter? Mel is the girl for the job! SLVA
Adopted: 12/21/07.

Melanie

Adopted!

Melanie is sweet and easy. She is the perfect "first dog." Melanie is a small, white German Shepherd Dog. She has lovely, petite features. Melanie loves people and will kiss you and sit in your lap as long as you let her. Melanie walks beautifully on the leash and is crate-trained and house-trained. Melanie is fine with other dogs, but doesn't like to play rough with the big dogs - she is a little timid around large pouncing pooches. Melanie is a soft girl with alot of love to give.
