![]() Iceberg |
Adopted! Ice was abandoned at the front door of the Humane Society back in August. He weighs in at 101 lbs., and is estimated to
be about 5 years old. He is up-to-date on shots and is scheduled to be neutered shortly. He is house-trained, great with kids,
other dogs (large and small) and cats. He has great manners, knows basic commands, and walks well on a leash. He has an
excellent disposition and loves human companionship. CAUTION: When I first brought Ice home in August, he had a major
issue with separation anxiety. Even in my GSD room with my two other dogs, he ripped down some dry wall and tore a hole
in a door trying to get out. I have no doubt most of this was contributed to being taken out of his peaceful home environment,
put in a kennel, transported from Richmond, and put in a new home environment with kids and dogs. He was definitely timid
and quiet for the longest time. In the past two months, Ice has gained 20 lbs., and plays actively with my dogs and children.
He no longer feels the need to rip down walls or doors and sleeps peacefully in my GSD room at night. I am working on getting
him used to a crate at this time as I know it will help in the upcoming transition to his permanent home. You can contact Ice's
foster home at
drauden44@comcast.net if you have any questions. RDVA

Indi Mae |
Adopted! When the Georgia sun set the night before I was to go to heaven, I had no idea that there was an angel in Virginia trying to
save my life. She worked with some really nice folks down my way and found a vet who would give me a check up and the needed
vaccines for my road trip. So, now here I am - in Virginia, living my life in the quiet, gentle way I was supposed to. My name is
Indi Mae. My greatest wish is to be by your side. I love other dogs and I find the cats interesting. Sometimes, if I get a little too
nosy, my foster mom just says my name and I come over to her instead of checking out the cat. My foster mom has made sure
that I'm healthy now and ready to live the rest of my life with you. I do take medicine twice a day because sometimes I will have
a little piddle accident. The vet said it's really not my fault; that I must have been spayed when I was just a little puppy and
sometimes this happens. I'm probably about nine, but I have very little gray and am really enjoying these new things called toys.
At first, I just sat beside them, but after watching the other dogs here, I have realized they are really fun. I especially like the
sheepskin squeaky toys. My foster mom had my teeth cleaned and oh, they feel so much better. Now, all I need is you -
anywhere, anytime, just you. I'm waiting... Please... Contact Liz e-mail at
ebrannan@cox.net for more information. BEVA

![]() India |
Adopted! Beautiful India was found as a stray in the city. How did anyone lose this pretty puppy? She is 5 months old. India is well-socialized and very calm for her age. This sweetheart is house-trained and a very quick learner. She is a pure-bred German Shepherd that needs a permanent family of her very own. Her foster mom takes her to the dog park daily to be sure she gets enough exercise. India will only be adopted to a family that can commit to the needs of a young dog. She is being fostered in Northern Virginia. |
![]() Iris #2 |
Adopted! Hi, my name is Iris. I am 15-month-old, pure-bred German Shepherd Dog. As you can see from my picture, I am a classic
black-and-tan, and I am completely adorable. I am a puppy, though, and have all of that puppy energy. I love to run around
and play with everyone I meet. I also love to give kisses and will give them to just about anyone who gets close enough. The one
exception to that rule is these little furry things called cats. It would be best if I was in a home without cats. I have had some
obedience classes and was going to get my therapy dog certification but my family has to move without me. I love everyone I
live with kids some are little and I love to play with them I am very gentle with them. I do have a sensitive tummy, but as as long
as I have my special prescription dog food, I do just fine. SOCVA

![]() Isis #2 |
Adopted! Isis is a young, GSD/Husky mix, very gentle and well-mannered, who was picked up as a stray with Duke, another
VGSR GSD. While in the shelter, she gave birth to 6 pups, 2 males and 4 females. Isis is an attentive, but not aggressive
mom, who shares her pups with her foster family. She gets along well with other big dogs, male and female, and does
great with the cat (just ignores him). She barks when she sees people, but greets visitors in a friendly, reserved manner,
no jumping and bounding around. Even though no one came looking for her at the shelter, it seems as though she has been
treated well, and was part of a family. Isis is a healthy, happy GS, knows some commands, and has very good house
manners. When on the leash, she pulls to investigate, but will make an excellent jogging partner - she stays right beside you
and is not distracted. Isis and her pups will be available for adoption after 11/7/04. GSAVA

![]() Isis #3 |
Adopted! This is Isis. She is about 3 and 1/2 years old. She is very good with people of all ages and soaks up any love
that you want to give her. She is house-trained and knows some simple commands like sit and speak. She has gotten
along well with my two dogs but has met a few dogs she did not like. She likes to come and see if I am going to get out
of bed in the morning when the alarm goes off. She is very happy to see me when I get home. Isis will make a very
good pet for some lucky family.

Isis' Pups![]() Gracie Adopted! ![]() Hooter Adopted! ![]() Roo Adopted! |
Adopted! Isis' pups - Well, here we all are at 8 weeks old, ready to come romping into your world and chew on your
feet. We're healthy, happy, and have spurts of energy and lots of nap attacks. We spend hours shredding paper,
playing with toys and each other, chewing on bones and each other, running from each other and running into
each other. We've met big dogs, but they scare us. The cat-thing is fun, though, and we like to gang up on him.
Sometimes we win and get to lick at him, but sometimes we lose and get whacked! Gracie (11 lbs) - she's the
sweet, little dainty one of us. Hooter (14 lbs) - and he is a hoot! When he gets tired or scared, he hoots and
howls - sounds like we're killing him, but he's smart. He's knows we're going to get loved up when he does that.
Roo (15 lbs) - she just loves to run every which a way, and gets us all into trouble. We're normal little fun-loving
puppies, looking for our forever homes. GSAVA

![]() Itsy Bitsy |
Adopted! Itsy Bitsy - who was formerly known as R221 at the shelter in southern VA, is a tiny GSD with a huge bark! Bitsy, who came to us very skinny at 37 lbs. is now up to 49 lbs. She will always be very small for a GSD. She likes to wrestle with other dogs and will bark at cats. She is almost housebroken now - we still have an accident once in a while. Bitsy is an excellent rider in the car and very quiet if you put her in a crate. Someone has been very unkind to poor Bitsy at some point in her life - she is very cautious of new folks at first. She is now very attached to my sister, Sue, and runs to her when someone else frightens her. Bitsy will jump up on the couch behind Sue and bury her face under Sue's arms if she feels threatened. She is around a year old according to the vet. Bitsy has already been spayed and is up to date on her vaccinations. Now she just needs to find a person to make her feel safe and help her turn into a confident dog. Her favorite game is called "I'm gonna git you" and it entails us chasing her until she flops down or jumps on the sofa. Then we "git her" (which equates to hugging and petting her!). She loves doing this and will follow us around hoping that we will play the game again. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Ivy |
Adopted! Hi! I'm Ivy, new to the group. I'm a sweet, sociable, 2-year-old, female GSD. I do well with other friendly dogs and
even the cats in my household. I am extremely willing to please, but have no obedience training, so that is a requirement
of my adoption. I am petite and pretty, too. My foster mom says I'm practically perfect - just a diamond in the rough. I'm
even well-behaved on a leash, and listened well when my foster mom made me sit every time a car went by on the scary
country roads near my house. I am recovering from an upper respiratory infection that I got at the shelter, and it will be
a couple weeks before I am spayed because I am "in heat" right now, but my mom is already considering applications, so
get yours in today! DBMD |
![]() Izer |
Adopted! Izer is a 6-year-old, big black-and-red, European-stye male GSD with a big square head. Must weigh about 85 lbs., and
could carry a bit more. What a nice boy! He fetches, knows his commands in German and walks nicely on a leash. Good with
children, adults and other dogs. He is suffering from dry-eye and will always need drops. Izer has some scarring on the cornea,
but the ophthalmologist feels that it is reversible with medication. Currently Izer has five different eye medications that must
be applied at different times during the day and during the week. He also needs an eye gel that is applied prior to every walk
and whenever his eyes are bothering him. If his eyes are not treated properly he can loose more eyesight. At this point his
treatment is very time consuming and whoever adopts him must provide his foster mother a warm feeling that there is a plan
for his care and a willingness to use the commands he has been taught so well. Free German lessons will be provided with the
adoption, if required. DHVA

Izzy |
Adopted! Izzy is a very sweet, 9-year-old, spayed, female GSD that was going to be euthanized because her owner didn't have the
time or money for her any more. She gets along well with kids, dogs, cats, and other animals. She's also crate-trained and
loves to play soccer.

![]() Jack #2 |
Adopted This sweet dog was turned in to the shelter when his mom died recently. The relatives didn't want him. Jack was an
orphan. So VGSR offered to find Jack a good home. Now he is in a foster home where he is loved and wanted. Jack plays
all day with his foster brothers and sisters, and adores his new foster family. He needs a little instruction on how to walk
properly on a leash, but certainly loves to go for a walk. He loves to play outside with his humans, too. He is house-trained.
Jack would like a permanent home where he can be part of a family that has time to take him on long walks, car rides, and
snuggles on the couch. Jack is 1.5 years old and weighs 80 pounds. Jack can sail over an average fence, so a 6 foot fence or
leash walks will be required for this athletic boy. Jack is wonderful with children and other dogs. So far, he has done fine
with the household cat, but we are still checking on the situation. This handsome, long-haired fellow is waiting to meet you
soon. Jack is being fostered in Northern Virginia. DGVA < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jack #5 |
Adopted! Meet Jack. He is a gorgeous, 1-2-year-old, neutered, male GSD. He weighs 80#. He loves kisses, tummy
rubs, other dogs, and car rides. He can be a bit barky but is learning "hush" and other obedience skills. He has
a big heart, and his personality is really blossoming. He does have separation anxiety which is helped by 1) the
company of a canine buddy, 2) a kong with peanut butter and hot dog inside, and 3) regular exercise. He is
house-trained and has the potential to be crate-trained. If you want more info on Jack please contact
joyce4gsd@yahoo.com. RJVA

![]() Jackson |
Adopted! Jackson is a striking black & tan male, not even 2 years old. A little shy, he warms up to people slowly. Jackson will be fairly large when he catches up on the weight he lost in the shelter. He loves and protects children. His former family credits him with saving the life of their 3 year old, when Jackson prevented her from running in front of a car. Jackson is also good around cats. Jackson wants to spend his time playing chase and hide & seek. He is looking for a new family that will love him forever. Jackson wants you to meet him in person to see his sweet personality. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jackson #2 |
Adopted! Meet Jackson - one B-I-G GSD! Good thing that he is just as friendly as he is huge. Jackson is 3 years old, loves to play with other dogs, and is very friendly to everyone, except kitty cats! He is housebroken, crate trained, does not chew and likes to ride in the car. Nothing would make him happier than to have another dog to romp around with or a trip to the dog park! < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jackson #3 |
Adopted! Master Jackson is between 10 and 12 months old. He is already 70 lbs. So a very big boy is inside! Jackson has very long legs, is very lean, has big paws and the most beautiful soft white coat ever, (until he plays in a mud puddle)! He heels like an expert with his happy bouncy gait. He will sit and lavish kisses on your face. He does jump gently up on your shoulders so he can see eye to eye with his 5'4" foster mom (we are working on this), and he is learning to lie down on command. Jackson is also house-broken and learning about his crate. Toys - he has not shown any interest yet but loves to race around the yard with you. He has been good with children, a little too curious about our cats but is quite trainable. Are you looking for a snowy white boy from Virginia Beach? < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jackson #4 |
Adopted! Jackson is a real looker. This gorgeous dog is about 1.5 years old, a sable, pure-bred German Shepherd. Jackson was
found as a stray and waited patiently in the animal shelter for us to rescue him. He weighs 90 pounds, is good with people
and other large dogs. No cats or small animals, though. Jackson has lots of energy and drive, so he will need an active
permanent home. Jackson knows some of the basics like sit and down. He is house- and crate-trained. Jackson will require
an experienced German Shepherd owner that is willing to do obedience work with him and give him a "job" to keep this big,
active boy busy. Jackson is being fostered in Northern Virginia. CBVA < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jackson #5 |
Adopted! I'm a pupper - can you tell? I don't hold still for long, especially when the camera is out. My foster Mom says I'm about 4 months old and already 35 pounds. Sometimes my ears stand straight up and other times they just fall down. I am strong, healthy, and look like my Mom met an Aussie when I was conceived. See the light gray patch on my side? My paws are large, so I'm gonna be a big boy someday. Right now I am learning to like my crate and keep it clean and dry. I love to chew EVERYTHING and play a lot with my foster brother's toys. Sometimes he growls at me when I take his Kong so I have to let him have it. Kitties are so much fun to chase until they hiss at me. I am learning my manners per Mom, but I kiss great, so no improvement needed! Shoelaces watch out! Every time I get a hold of the laces Mom tells me no and gives me another fun toy to chew. It all tastes so good. Have some toys at your house for me? I'm being fostered in the Virginia Beach area. DBTVA < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jackson #6 |
Adopted! Meet the dog of many nicknames - Jackie Blue, Action Jackson, Cap'n Jackson, or just plain old Jack! Jackson is one of the
best car riders that I have ever fostered. It is easy to forget that he is in the car with you. He is very friendly to all he meets
and is super affectionate - he will lean up against you for a snuggle at any opportunity. He gets along fine with other dogs, but
we are pretty sure that he would munch a cat if given the chance. He is house-trained, well-behaved, walks nicely with a Halti
collar, does not chew and is such a good, good boy in the house. Jackson knows how to sit, down, speak, shake and sit up and
beg, but he is confused as to which word applies, so when you hold up a treat he goes through his entire repertoire in an effort
to earn his reward. This handsome hunk won't be available for long! SLVA

Jacob |
Adopted! Jacob is a solid white male, probably about 80 lbs., and approximately 2 years young. He has been kid tested and is totally kid friendly - and can't hand out kisses fast enough! Great with my 2 year old female Shepherd. He doesn't even mind that she is not solid white - he likes to run with her anyway. He was a stray who melted everyone's hearts in the shelter, and now he already has my 10 year old wrapped around his big right paw with her dad not far behind. He follows directions from all of us, be it boy or girl. Knows some tricks already, and at last check, appears to be housebroken. He is a rare jewel just waiting to be wrapped around your finger! < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jacob #2 |
Adopted! Hi! My name is Jacob, but my foster mom calls me Jake, or 'His Royal Goofiness'. I am between 1 and
2 years old, 68 pounds, and am neutered. I could stand to put on a few pounds, but at dinner time I am more
concerned about getting kisses from my foster mom than eating much. I am hesitant in new situations, but I
am soon giving kisses and am quite curious. My foster mom says I am one of the smartest dogs she has fostered.
I only have to be told once and I remember what to do. I know some commands and am quite proud of my 'heel'.
I am athletic, jog every day with her and would make a great walking/jogging buddy. I bonded quickly to my foster
mom. I'll go in a crate when she is not home but I'm quite skilled at getting out on my own. I then enjoy doing
creative things to keep myself occupied. I like most dogs, but if they give me a rough time I nip them on the behind.
I want to be your best friend. I have energy but I settle down when you are reading or watching TV. I want to give
you kisses and snuffle sweet nothings in your ear. Would you give me a forever home? RJVA

![]() Jada |
Adopted! Jada is a very sweet and calm female GSD. She is a black Sable who is overweight, and will need to go on a diet to lose at least 15 pounds. She is definitely not good with other dogs, but is fine with people. We don't yet know about cats. She is crate-trained and will not make a sound when put in the crate. It is love at first sight when people meet this gorgeous purebred German Shepherd. She is a perfect example of why there are so many advantages to adopting an adult dog. Jada is ready to meet you at an adoption event. She is being fostered in Maryland. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jade |
Adopted! Beautiful Jade was saved by workmen who found her, bordering on emaciated, in the back yard of a vacant house. She's
got a wonderful spirit and is growing in confidence every day as she feels more safe and secure. She enjoys working for her
treats and already has come, sit, shake, and down in her repertoire. She walks well on a leash and with a little work would learn
to heel. She was amazing at her first VGSR PetsMart adoption day where she met all sizes of new people and dogs. She loves
playing with her foster brother, especially biting on his ears and teasing him with the rope toy until he'll play tug with her. Jade
is very intelligent and would do well in a home where she is challenged. She's up-to-date on her shots and was recently spayed.

Jaden |
Adopted! Jaden is a big, friendly girl, about 2 1/2 years old, that is great with other dogs, cats, and kids. Jaden was rescued from living in
an outdoor pen 24/7. She is oh so happy to be inside and clean. Being inside is a new experience for her. She is doing well with the
wood floors, but still unsure about stairs. There is one thing inside that she took to immediately though: the couch! Jaden is 15-20
lbs. underweight, but is a good eater and should pick up weight quickly. Jaden is crate-trained and is remarkably house-trained so far.
Formal obedience lessons are a requirement to adopt Jaden, as she would benefit from being taught manners and it would also aid her
in bonding to her new family. Simply, she's going to be too big to be unruly! She is a true "diamond in the rough" and will blossom into
a wonderful pet and companion. Approved adopters are welcome to contact her foster home at
barbie@shepherdrescue.org. DBMD.

![]() Jake #2 |
Adopted! Jake is a one year old, solid black, purebred male GSD. He is already a large fellow and not finished growing yet. He needs some basic training and discipline in his life since he is young and still a bit rambunctious. Jake has been raised with children and two cats. He does enjoy harassing the kitties a bit. He has not been socialized with other dogs, so he is very barky when he sees one. Jake loves to ride in the car and walks fairly well on a leash. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jake #4 |
Adopted! Jake is a 6-year-old neutered male who came to VGSR as the product of a divorce. Jake is very handsome, friendly, and very responsive to his handler's voice. He gets along well with other dogs and shows no interest in cats at all. He sits on command, and walks well on a leash. He likes to play fetch, and is very human-focused. He will make a wonderful and devoted companion. He will play fetch with you, walk with you wherever you go, but would be equally happy to curl up next to you. Jake is up-to-date on shots, and weighs approximately 75 pounds. Jake is being fostered in the Charlottesville area. Contact his foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com for more information. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jake #6 |
Adopted! Hey there! Jake here. I was rescued from the animal shelter after some nice person saved me from a yard sale.
I am a five-month-old German Shepherd mix that is looking for a loving home. I am about 60 pounds and only five
months old, so I have plenty of growing to do. I'm a little shy at first with people but I love playing with other dogs.
My foster family owns a cat that I will sometimes chase, but I leave her alone when we get face-to-face. I have a sweet
disposition, and my foster family is learning more about me every day as I become more comfortable in my new
surroundings. RNJVA

Jake #7 |
Adopted! I was moved from Marine family to Marine family as my parents were sent to different stations around the world. I have
a skin problem which has caused me to lose most of the fur from under my chin to the inside of my back legs. My last caretaker
found it very difficult to give me the daily baths that her vet said I needed. Her vet thought I might have allergies. My new vet
thinks the skin condition might be a fungal infection, and he has taken great care of me. My ear infection is gone and my skin is
looking much better. My vet says my skin is still a little oily, but I don’t have to take those baths for now. He wants to see how
my skin does without the baths for awhile. I might not need to take any more! I have been neutered and am up-to-date on my
shots, so I am ready to go to my forever home! I have put on a few pounds and look better, but I still need a few more. My
previous owner said I am very cautious of men, but I have been doing well with my foster dad, and I did well with the vet. I am
concerned about people with domineering attitudes. I get along well with kids of various ages. I walk pretty well on lead, like to
ride in the truck, am getting along great with the young girl GSD here. I get along OK with the older girl GSDs, but they can play
really rough at times, which I don’t like. I can’t remember if I have ever met a cat. I like to play with the things here that they
call Jolly Balls! I was an outside dog before but I haven’t tried to escape from the yard. I am house-trained and crate-trained. I
know few commands like Sit, Shake and Come. I am AKC-registerable. If you think you could give me my forever home, please
come and meet me at a Gainesville Adoption Day. LJVA

![]() Jasmine |
Adopted! Jasmine is a special black and silver, shepherd-mix girl that likely has some Keeshond or Norwegian Elkhound blood in her. Less than a year old, she is playful and has already learned some very nice house manners. Jasmine has lots of puppy traits but tends to like a good snuggle and belly rub more than anything. She is good on a leash and knows some basic commands. Jasmine likes to play with other dogs, but is not good with felines and other assorted yummy creatures. Jasmine's exotic coloring gets her lots of compliments and attention. She loves it all. Jasmine needs a family that will give her lots of opportunities to romp and take the time to teach her new things. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jasmine #2 |
Adopted! Sweet little Jasmine came from a shelter in West Virginia. She has a gorgeous sable coat and beautiful brown eyes. The vet estimates her age to be between 9 months and a year, and it appears she has spent a lot of her life as an outside dog. So far, Jasmine does well with people of all sizes, but she does like to jump up on you for attention, so she will need to learn some manners. Jasmine is looking for a family that will keep her exercised and take her to obedience class. She is having lots of fun playing with the dogs in her foster home and is even doing okay with the cat. This sweet little girl has lots of love to give!! < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jasmine #3 |
Adopted! Jasmine is a petite German Shepherd. She's 3 years old and would be good for a family looking for a small shepherd with lots of love to share. Jasmine is shy. She's learning to be more confidant and is happy for all the attention. Jasmine seems to be indifferent to cats and likes other dogs. She's not demanding of your attention but will just sneak in for a cuddle when you least expect it. Jasmine is being fostered in Northern Virginia. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jasmine #4 |
Adopted! Jasmine is a 5-6 year old, spayed, female, German Shepherd Dog. She weighs about 74 pounds, is heartworm negative, and current on all her shots. Jasmine is very well-socialized, loves all people, kids, dogs, and even cats. She is house-trained, and prefers being an inside dog, unless you are going outside with her. She does enjoy going to dog park to see friends, and she walks well on a leash. Jasmine was parted from her owner who had to move under circumstances that didn't permit him to take a dog. She will form a fast and loving bond with her new human companion. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |

Adopted! Super sweet Jasmine is around 5 1/2 years old. Jasmine walks nicely on a leash and she is fine living with other dogs and even cats! Adopted! Hello GSD lovers! My name is Jasmine. I am black, tan, and white under my chest. Also at the tip of my tail is white. I weigh 14 lbs. and am 9 weeks old. I am very playful, love to run around with my sisters. I am very lovable and love to play. Puppy training would be so cool! Playing and learning with other puppies would be a wonderful experience for me and my forever family. I am looking for my forever family, you will fall in love with me, and I will make you very proud of me. I am being fostered in Maryland. |

Adopted! Jasmine is such a beautiful female GSD, and 14 months old. She has wonderful house manners, and loves to ride in
the car. She sits and will down stay very well and is still practicing coming on command and heeling. Jasmine still has
some pup in her that shows when she plays with her toys. Fetch is a special favorite. Jasmine would do best in a home
with no other female dogs because she does want to be the boss. She loves all big and little people and she even likes cats!
Jasmine is a great dog and up-to-date with all her shots and heartworm preventative. Need a little Jazz in your home?

Jasmine #8 |
Adopted! Hello to my future forever home. I know you're out there reading this somewhere so listen up! My name is Jasmine
(a.k.a Lucy), and I am a gorgeous, 6-year-old, petite, female GSD with a lot of love to give. Even though I'm beautiful and I
know it...I am VERY shy, but will warm up to you fast. I love my big sister GSD and my little brother GSD, so I will be ok
with your family dog as well. Guess what? I even hang out with those crazy felines as well! Do you have any kids? No problem,
I LOVE THEM TOO....ALL AGES! I need a family who will give me lots of time and attention. Although I am so confident
about my looks I do have a little bit of separation anxiety that can be helped with some supplements my foster mommy gives
me and some training. I do great in the house (I'm house-trained), please don't crate me though... I HATE that thing. I need
some work on the leash, but I'm getting better and my recall is great. I love car rides, grooming, and squeaky toys! So please...
please...please, don't make me beg it causes wrinkles! Please make me your forever companion and contact my foster mom
ASAP if you're interested. Please e-mail

Jasmine #9 |
Adopted! This petite, little girl comes to us from the Rockbridge SPCA in Lexington, Va., where she had been since July. (The
previous owners were moving and didn't want to take her with them.) She was rescued only days before she was to be
euthanized. Frankly, I cannot see why nobody wanted to adopt her. She is an enthusiastic, sweet girl with lots and lots of
kisses and tail wags to give, and was one of the favorites at the shelter. She is one exhuberant ball of energy. Play, play, play,
from morning 'til night. Her hilarious antics keep us laughing! She is so much fun. Because she is such an active girl, she would
do well in a home with kids or other dogs to keep her busy. I would also prefer house with a fenced (not electric) yard for her
to run around in. She is an extremely fast runner and would probably do well in agility training. She gets along great with my
other dogs, and does well with my cats. She is up to date on her shots and has been dewormed. She just had a bath and is
lookin' and smellin' pretty for her future forever family! So c'mon--what are you waiting for? Please e-mail

![]() Jasper |
Adopted! Howdy - the name's Jasper, and if I say do myself, I am quite the handsome fellow. I am three years old, neutered, get along just dandy with other dogs and believe it or not, I even get along OK with cats! My favorite past time is chasing my Kong and trying to chew it apart after I retrieve it. I am tall, lean and a quite the charmer. I'll give you kisses if you give me the opportunity. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jasper #2 |
Adopted! Jasper was born April of 2001 and has a beautiful sable coloring. He is one incredible dog, and whoever adopts him
will hit the jackpot for sure! He is great with other dogs and people including kids as he was raised with three kids, ages
12, 10 and 3. Jasper is a super-sweet boy who bonds with you pretty fast and then wants nothing but to be near you. He
is a big boy at 81 pounds. His ex-owners were good about feeding him but not about exercising him. Needless to say, he
could stand to lose at least 5 pounds. He is a strong boy who will need a strong hand as he pulls some times on the leash
when he is excited about his new surroundings. I can tell he was never taken to very many places. Jasper has it all, beauty,
awesome temperament and loyalty. An overall perfect dog! VCMD < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jasper #3 |
Adopted! This is Jasper, a 2 year old spaniel/Australian shepherd mix, with striking coloration much like a Bernese Mountain Dog. Jasper
has a wonderful zest for life and is as sweet as he can be. He gets along famously with his canine friends and kitty friends too. He is
house-trained and crate-trained. He is very playful, yet has quiet times also. Jasper is a pretty sturdy little guy, at about 44 lbs., and
is healthy, updated on his vaccines, and neutered. He actually enjoys cuddling and being coddled. He also has an endearing quality of
sleeping with his legs shamelessly sprawled out behind him. So right about now, you're probably thinking - but he's not a German
Shepherd! Jasper was rescued after fate landed him in a shelter in rural Virginia, a shelter that uses the "gas chamber" to euthanize
their pets. His foster mom couldn't stand the though of this cute little guy ending his life so soon (and he was billed as a "shepherd mix",
so the kind people at VGSR allowed him to be taken under their wing. Despite his rough start, Jasper shows no signs of being abused or
neglected. He is very appreciative of being inside and well fed. Oh, and in case you have kids, beware - he's at a great height to kiss
small kids, and takes every opportunity to do just that!! Be sure to apply to adopt Jasper today, as this little guy won't be available for
long! If you are interested in finding out more information about Jasper, contact his foster mom at:

![]() Jazz |
Adopted! Hi, I'm Jazz. I'm a cute, petite, six-month-old pup with an abundance of puppy energy. My picture doesn't do me
justice. There's a little something else in my lineage besides Shepherd, but I think that just makes me extra special. I just
got to my foster home and am trying very hard to learn the rules. I'm a good girl in the house and don't bother anything
that's not mine (but the trash can is very tempting). I love to play with my foster brother, and my favorite game is to get
him to chase me all over the yard. I like to run after blowing leaves, and I toss and chase the spiky balls that fall from the
sweet gum tree. I don't like my crate too much but settle down and nap after a few minutes. My foster mom thinks I'm
very cute when I get scolded because I sit down and hang my head. I'm really trying to do everything right, I just make a
mistake once in a while. I like to be the center of attention, and I'm very affectionate and cuddly, but I'm learning to share.
I'd love to find a home with someone who would spend a lot of time with me and teach me all the things a growing puppy
should know. It would be really nice if I had another dog to play with too so I can work off some of my excess energy. Will
you be my new Mom and/or Dad? KBJVA

![]() Jazzy |
Adopted! Jazzy is a 5-month-old, sweetheart of a puppy. She loves to play with her foster brothers and snuggle in a lap afterwards. Jazzy needs a family to take her to the dog park, obedience class and for rides in the car. After a rough start in life, she is ready to be part of a family that will take care of her and love her forever. Jazzy has learned to walk on a leash, potty outside and some basic commands. She loves children and does very well with cat friends. Little Jazzy does not like the crate or being left alone, so she will need a home that accomodate these needs. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() JC |
Adopted! My name is JC, and I am 6 months old. I was turned in to the SPCA when my owner became too ill to take
care of me. I am a very sweet girl but I am still learning a lot. My foster mom has been working with me on my
manners and I am improving. I still have a lot of puppy in me and love to romp and play with my foster sisters!
I also like to chase the kitties that are in the house but I don't hurt them. It is just a lot of fun! I still have a few
accidents in the house but my foster mom is being very patient with me. I am getting used to my crate and will
stay in it all night now with no fussing. I went to the vet the other day and she gave me a clean bill of health and
made sure I was up to date on all my shots. I weighed 50 lbs. and still have a lot of growing to do. My foster home
is in the Roanoke/Salem area.

Jeff |
Adopted! Jeff is one of the sweetest, happiest dogs ever. His exuberance and enthusiasm is contagious to people as well as dogs.
Jeff is all smiles and energy, typical of a young shepherd. His size, shape, and color suggest that he may be at least partly a
Belgian Malinois instead of a German Shepherd Dog, but whatever he is, Jeff is a great dog. He is young and he needs guidance
in channeling his energy, but he is smart, well-motivated, and eager to please. His former foster reported that he was good with
dogs and cats and children of all ages. Jeff is house- and crate-trained, and walks well on the leash. He was apparently struck
by a car when he was younger and his leg wasn't set properly so he has a bent front leg, but he as adjusted to it completely, and
it doesn't slow him down or prevent him from playing with other dogs. Jeff will be attending adoption events in Gainesville and
Sterling. If you would like to learn more about Jeff, you can contact his foster home at

Adopted! This is our lovely girl, not much more than 1 year old, and about 67 lbs. We named her Jenell (German), which describes
her as intelligent and kind. That's our girl. She is gentle, bright and eager to please, with great big kisses. We got Jenell
from a shelter as a stray whose owners never came to find her. How sad! She has good house manners, an excellent loving
companion and even knows some basic obedience. Likes some other dogs, learning about cats now and loves all people and
children. Jenell will be going though treatment for heartworm this month so quiet times will be in order then she will be
able to romp and play with everyone. Jenell is being fostered in Virginia Beach. Got room for Jenell in your heart? dbtva

![]() Jerry |
Adopted! While Jerry may not be a pure-bred GSD, he is the sweetest little fellow in town. Jerry likes to have body contact and is
very content to spoon with you in bed. He lights up and starts waggin' when he sees a bunch of kids. He is a little shy and
extremely gentle. Jerry sniffed the cat, licked the cat and then walked away. He has excellent manners in both the house
and the car. Though he may not be much of a watch dog, but he is such a good boy that you will just adore him as much as we
do. SLVA

![]() Jesse |
Adopted! Jesse, who was originally known as Pretty Pretty Princess, is a spayed GSD, that is right around two years old. She is
up-to-date on shots and looking for a good home. Jesse does fine with cats and is currently living with a bunch of other GSDs.
She would be fine living with male dogs and loves to wrestle and play. Jesse can be dominant around other female dogs that
do not recognize her superiority! Jesse is house-trained, loves to ride in the car and take hikes down at the river. She does
not need to be crated when you are not home since she is a very well-behaved dog. She has been diagnosed with dysplasia
and will be paying a visit to the orthopedic doctor soon. Jesse is being fostered in Northern Virginia. WCVA < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |

Adopted! Little Jessica was turned in to the shelter because no one had time to train her or play with her. Everyone should know that puppies need lots of time, attention and love. Now Jessie is in a VGSR foster home, beginning her education. She is only eight months old, and will be a medium size adult. Jessie is playing fine with the other dogs and seems to have quite a lot of energy. She is friendly, smart and a good listener. Adopted! My name is Jessica, and I am new to VGSR. I was born on Dec 1, 2003, and weigh about 25 lbs. I have been in my foster home for two days and have been taught how to walk on a leash, although I still don't like it at times as I had never been on a leash in my life. I am a little shy at first but warm up quickly to all the dogs and children here. I am going to learn about cats sometime this week. I am learning the sit command and have picked that up very well. I will keep you updated on my progress. I am being fostered in the Shenandoah Valley. RDVA < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jessica #4 |
Adopted! Hi! My name is Jessica. I am a very sweet, loving and energetic pure-bred German Shepherd Dog. I don't
know what I did wrong, but my family dumped me at the pound, and I was so sad I didn't eat for the 2 weeks.
Finally, a really wonderful lady rescued me and took me to my new foster mom. When my new foster mom took
me to this place called a vet's office, the vet told her that I am about 3 years old, and that my other family must
not have taken good care of me because I was full of yucky parasites and to top it all off, I was pregnant.
Unfortunately, because of the stress of being in the shelter and me not eating for so long, I lost my puppies. The
good news is I'm getting healthier a lot quicker now, and am ready for my forever home. I weigh about 55 pounds
and need to gain another 10 or so. I have now been spayed and am heartworm negative. I love the children in my
foster home (ages 12, 10 and 5) and I try to play with 2 of the other dogs. I am fully crate-trained but we're not
sure about me being house-trained. I would benefit from obedience training. I am a very smart girl and I will
chase a ball as long as you will throw it, although you might have to chase me some to get it back. I am being
fostered in Prince George County. BDMD

![]() Jewelle |
Adopted! Hello, my name is Jewelle. Please don't hate me because I'm beautiful! I am 3 years old, spayed, up-to-date on my shots and looking for someone to love me. I have a very impressive pedigree to match my impressive plush coat. I was a bit dirty after staying in a kennel for a while, but when the nice lady brought me home and popped me straight into the bathtub, I took it very well and did not even struggle to get away. I like to go for walks and car rides, and am quite an affectionate young lady. I am a bit fussy about my adult dog friends, but I did learn to like Remo (Lea's dog) on the ride home from the kennel. I guess since I am living in a house full of other dogs that I will just have to learn how to get along. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
![]() Jill |
Adopted! Jill is a big girl with a big heart and lots of love to give. She was unceremoniously dumped at a shelter when her family split
in a divorce and everyone went their separate ways with no one taking responsibility for the dog. Through it all, Jill has
remained a sweet, well-adjusted, and trusting dog. She has adapted well and has never had an unkind word for the 5 or 6 new
dogs she has been socializing with in her foster home. Jill must have been a bit of couch potato, but she's now getting more
exercise and less food and will be slimming down to a nice summer weight, probably about 80 pounds. She loves getting out to
play in some open space and she walks very nicely on a leash. Although Jill is friendly and well socialized, because of her size she
would be an imposing presence and would be great to accompany someone who likes to walk. She was a bit anxious going to her
first adoption event, but she enjoyed herself once there and did very well with all the new people, dogs, and kids. She went past
some cats and paid them no attention, but we don't really know if she's had any one-on-one experience with a cat. Jill is living
near Charlottesville, VA, but will be coming to Northern Virginia adoption events. You can contact her foster home at
vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions or would like to meet this wonderful dog. JBVA

![]() Jingles |
Adopted! Jingles is a beautiful, sable male about 3 years old. He should weigh about 90 pounds. Jingles is a typical German Shepherd boy. He loves to fetch balls and is good with other dogs. Jingles is also very generous with hugs and kisses. Because he is a very high energy boy, he will only be happy in a home that keeps him busy. He is no couch-potato. His high intelligence will require that he keep learning new tricks and commands. He knows some basic obedience and wants very much to please. he is OK with cats and kids. He loves to play fetch and he is an expert ball catcher - he can even nail a line drive! Jingles is also very good and quiet when inside of the crate and is learning to be housebroken. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |

Adopted! My name is Joker. I had a rough start with life, but I am determined to catch up. I may be small, but I have
real gusto. I love to play. I love to snuggle. And I love to EAT!!! I know I won't be a really big GSD, but my big
personality will make up for it all. I am a pure-bred, but due to malnutrition, I didn't grow very fast in the beginning.
I am very very smart, too. I am almost house-trained and I already walk fairly well on a leash. I am very eager to
please and learn really fast. I am being really spoiled in my new foster home, but would really like to have humans
to call my own...DGVA

![]() Jordan |
Adopted! Jordan was abandoned at the vet's office and then turned in to a shelter. VGSR took her in, and Jordan had surgery to
remove a tumor. Jordan's tumor was found to be benign. We have nicknamed her Jordi. At this time it seems nothing can
slow her down - she is a blast, very talkative, energetic and fun-loving. She will tell you all about it when she isn't getting her
fair share of attention! She's timid when first meeting people, but warms up quickly. She gets along with other dogs, but is
somewhat jealous of some females. She loves to play ball, knows basic commands and is very obedient, loves to take walks and
rides, and chases anything that moves in the yard. The cat is no problem - she ignores him. She has excellent house manners and
doesn't need to be crated. Jordi loves it outside and will need a fenced yard, would do well with a playmate, but will usually prefer
to be the center of attention. If you would like more information, you can contact her foster home at

![]() Jorg |
Adopted! Jorg was crated most of his young life and through neglect lacked exercise, proper nourishment and attention by his previous
owners. Currently is being fed three to four times per day. He is only partially house-trained, but if prompted to go outside, he
will use the yard for his business - have only had two accidents in the week we have had him. He can get through the night without
problems and is confined to an 8'x10' room during the night without complaining. Foster home has two other dogs (one large and
one small) and he gets along well with them as well as other dogs encountered on the street. Enjoys riding in cars especially if
provided a window where he can see other people and cars. He needs more leash training and should be the only dog walked until
he gets the hang of it. Enjoys being with his people friends and follows them all over the house. His ears currently curve to the
front, but recently the right ear is starting to stand straight up. He is very curious when in a new place but understands a loud
NO and will stop doing things he shouldn't be doing. He is a very loving and relatively calm dog (for a puppy) and has the potential
to make a great companion.

![]() Josey #2 |
Adopted! Josey is a three year old pitch-black German Shepherd. Josey is full of life and obedient. She absolutely LOVES playing
with balls and squeaky toys, and will amuse herself for hours running around the yard with a toy in her mouth. Josey's most
favorite toy ever is a plush duck that quacks when it's squeezed, and Josey will seek this toy out above all others. She takes
great care not to harm the toy - she seems to know if she bites it too much, she might accidentally hurt it! Josey is
crate-trained and house-trained. She is tremendously agile, and flies over baby gates, however shows absolutely no interest
in leaving her yard, which is surrounded by a 4 1/2 foot split rail fence. Josey rides very well in the car. Josey picks her
friends very carefully, and should only be placed in a home with a submissive dog. She plays for long periods of time with
Phoenix (also available), but is argumentative with most female dogs, and sometimes male dogs, too. She is very dominant,
thus would need to be placed with a submissive dog only. Josey likes cats, all right - she prefers them with a side of teriyaki
sauce please (NO CATS!). Josey would excel at higher obedience, agility, or some other job. She seems to have an endless
supply of energy. Despite her high energy, Josey does know how to settle down in the house, and is surprisingly good around
toddlers and smaller children. Josey requires a stable diet, and a supplement twice daily to help her digest her food. Her foster
is slowly weaning her off of this supplement in hopes that it will not be a lifelong thing. Even if it is, Josey eats it like candy, and
does NOT have any side effects. She is perfectly healthy and happy. Josey frequently attends adoption events in hopes of
finding her own active family. She is being fostered in Maryland. DBMD < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |

Adopted! Josie is one of the sweetest German Shepherd Dogs that I have ever met. At the adoption day last Sunday, she greeted everyone, big dogs, little dogs, adults and especially kids, with happy tail wags and numerous kisses. She appears to be totally fine with the feline persuasion too. Her foster mom says that she is housebroken and very, very affectionate. Right now she is living peacefully with a small terrier and two other German Shepherds. The vet said that Josie is around 3 years old and it appears that she recently had a litter of pups. She is spayed and has also had her teeth cleaned so her kisses will be extra nice! If you are looking for a loyal, ever so friendly pooch, please consider meeting our dear Josie. She is a pretty black and tan gal who weighs about 65 lbs. < -- (click on this picture to view larger images) |
Josie #2 |
Adopted! Josie is a German-bred Plush Coat who loves children and misses having them around. Josie has one charming ear that

on the tail at an early age by a small dog and her owner has not socialized her further with other dogs, but due to her good
nature, I think a little socialization would go a long way with her. She has had some formal obedience training, too! Josie would
make an excellent FAMILY dog for someone with children! Fully house-trained, she sleeps on the bed at home and is a snuggle
bug once she warms to you! FMVA
