Echo

Adopted!

Please meet the fabulous Mr. Echo, the amazing, fetching wonderdog! Echo will fetch a ball as long as you can throw a ball - and that's a guarantee. Besides being such a marvelous fetching phenomenon, he is friendly, smart, eager to please, get along fine with people of all sizes and ages and is OK with other dogs, too. He is around 4 1/2 years old and he lost his home due to allergies in a newborn baby. If you are looking for a classic GSD, Echo is your dog!
Adopted: 10/30/05.

Echo #2

Adopted!

Echo is a beautiful, frisky, black-and-tan, pure-bred GSD. She is between 12 and 18 months old, and has lots of puppy-like energy. She had a hard time in the shelter and lost weight. Since she's been in her foster home, getting medicine, food, love and attention, she has come back strong. Echo loves to play - ball tops her list of favorite things, but other games/toys are acceptable. She wants to please her humans and bonded very quickly with her foster Mom. While Echo gets along with her canine foster sister, she definitely wants to be close to her human family. Echo needs to go to a home that can provide her with lots of love and attention to help her build her confidence. She is house-trained and knows some basic commands and will quickly learn all that is expected of her. We're still getting to know Echo, so we'll update this write-up as we know more. She is being fostered in Northern Virginia. KHVA
Adopted: 05/02/05.

Elke

Adopted!

Elke is a young female (the vet says under a year) who is very happy to have been rescued. Elke gets along fine with other dogs. Cats are unknown. Elke has undergone heartworm treatment and is doing well. She will have no residual effects if kept on preventative. She is spayed and current on all her vaccines. Elke is being fostered in Maryland. DBMD.

Ellie

Adopted!

Ellie is yet another very sweet girl. She was picked up as a stray in Orange County, VA, and brought to me very skinny and with a skin condition on her back legs and rear end which is currently being treated with antibiotics and medicated shampoo. This poor dear looked in bad shape when I first got her but after a bath and a regular diet she's looking better each day. Last week she weighed 73 lbs. at the vet, but probably needs to put on another 8-10 lbs. She's a tall girl with a long, narrow face, dark beautiful eyes and a big smile as she comes trotting towards you! She loves the company of my other dogs, but would do just as well being an only dog. She has impeccable house manners, is quiet, has a good appetite and spends much of each day taking it easy in one of her favorite nap spots in the house. She gets along fine with other dogs, but has not been tested with cats. She did fine with all the kids who were in her face at the adoption day, too. This sweet girl needs a forever home where she'll get continued TLC and affection. Is that your family? KBVA
Adopted: 12/08/06.

Ellie #2

Adopted!

Ellie is a 6-year-old, female German Shepherd Dog. She is gorgeous and has a wonderful, laid-back personality to match. She had been owned by a breeder who finally got out of the business. Ellie has probably produced many litters of excellent pups and it is now time for her to retire from that line of work and enjoy life. She hasn't had the benefit of being a housedog, but she has been well cared for and it shows. Ellie is calm, sedate, and dignified. She moved into a new living situation in her foster home and is fine with the other dogs she has met so far. Ellie is spayed and current on vaccines. City life will be a new experience for her and she will need some time and help to adjust to civilized niceties like leash walking. Anyone willing to give this girl a chance at a new and better life will be rewarded many times over with the intense devotion that female shepherds are known to give. You can contact her foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. Ellie will attend adoption outings in Sterling and Gainesville and maybe others, contact the foster home for availability. JBVA
Adopted: 01/31/08.

Ellory

Adopted!

Please meet Ellory. Ellory came to us all the way from South Carolina and whatever her circumstances were there she still has all her southern graces. She is a really special dog. She just fits in perfectly. She gets a long great with her two, two-year-old GS sisters and her 15-year-old kitty brother. She plays when it is playtime and relaxes when it is quiet time. She is really smart. She came with no name and learned Ellory immediately. She listens well, comes when called, walks on a leash, knows sit, down and paw. And, she is a love bug! She eats up all the kisses and hugs she can get. E-mail rochelekadish@yahoo.com if you have any questions. SRVA
Adopted: 02/23/08.

Elly

Adopted!

Elly is a pure bred Czech German Shepherd Dog that was brought to America when she was 8 weeks old. She spent the first few months living in quarantine with a family in Virginia, before she was brought to the Baltimore County Police Department. Elly was being trained to be a cadaver dog and made it through almost all of her training, but failed out because she would not behave off lead. She has had obedience and obstacle course training. After leaving the police department, she went to the home of a police officer who took care of her for about 11 months, but due to his son's allergies, they were unable to keep her. We have taken her in as a foster dog, but she needs a permanent home. Elly is good with other dogs and cats, but tends to play rough and is passive aggressive, and should go to a home without other dogs. Since Elly has done obstacle course training, she is not easily contained. She can jump over a fence up to 5 feet tall, so she would need a fence that is at least 6 feet. She also is good at knocking things over, like a baby gate or other similar barrier. She is very good on her leash and does not pull when on walks. She will play fetch, especially with soccer balls and is extremely quick and agile. She would do very well with agility training. Elly is also a good digger. She loves to find large rocks - generally baseball size or larger. She will dig till she finds one and then stop. She is able to sniff the rocks in the ground.

Elsa

Adopted!

If you want to fall in love, meet pretty Elsa. She is between 2-3 years old, and weighs 77 pounds. She has vitality but settles down quickly when needed. She is smart and will bond quickly to her owner. Elsa is well-mannered, knows some basic commands and walks well on a leash. She is truly a sweet dog who is a bit timid. She needs someone who will give her confidence and show her the good things in life. She gets along with people and dogs, but would probably do best in a home without a lot of commotion. She likes other dogs, but is timid if the other dog is a strong alpha. Elsa enjoys walks, kong, being petted, and watching TV. She is crate trained, and while it's not an absolute, crating her while you are gone may be preferable. Elsa is not spayed but will be soon. She is up-to-date on all her shots. RJVA
Adopted: 08/08/05.

Elsa #2

Adopted!

Elsa is an absolutely stunning female with a personality to boot! The guesstimate on her age puts her around 3 years old. She was found as a stray, taken to a shelter where she was not claimed, and that's where a VGSR volunteer found her. What is amazing that whoever owned her never came looking for her - she is stunning (the pictures do not do her beautiful coloring and face justice), knows her commands (in German no less) and is an absolute sweetie!!! She does need to gain some weight, which should be between 70 - 80 pounds. She wakes her foster mom up with kisses in the morning, snuggles with her and is just a love bug. She might need a refresher course on leash manners. From what her foster mom can tell, she craves human attention/affection more than her foster brothers, which makes it seem she was an only dog, or possibly shared her home with an older dog that was not very active. You better hurry, if you are thinking of adopting her, her foster mom is crazy about her. RNVA
Adopted: 10/10/05.

Elvis #2

Adopted!

Elvis is a beautiful, 8-month-old, 72 LB, pure-bred GSD from Puerto Rico. He traveled with his family to Tidewater Virginia only to be given up. Elvis is lots of fun and very intelligent. He still mouths a bit and loves to play. He is learning his house manners and seems to really enjoy all the other dogs to play with. A little clumsy, but what pup isn't all legs at times. Kisses galore, too. Elvis would be best placed in a home with a playmate and older children that he can't push over by accident. Come meet Elvis in Virginia Beach. He's in the building!

Emily

Adopted!

Emily is the partner to Clooney. They were found together, roaming as strays in a rural area. Emily is also about one year old and quite the beauty. She will need a home where someone can teach her with positive reinforcement and love. Emily should weigh about 70 pounds and has the sweetest personality. At the recent, Pet Expo she loved all the attention and did well with swarms of children. Emily is house-trained and may know some basic commands. Emily is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Emily #2

Adopted!

Emily #2 is a very pretty, black and light tan female. She is 4 years old and weighs 71 lbs. Emily was recently spayed, and is recovering from her surgery. She is feeling quite overwhelmed with all the changes she has gone through recently. Up until a few days ago, she was one of two German Shepherds owned by a family. The wife became ill and couldn't handle both dogs, and Emily was given up to the shelter. Her companion was an older, male German Shepherd. According to their former owner, they got along fine, although Emily was a little bossy. She used to take all the toys away from him. To get around that, the male would steal the balls from her and hide them. For now, she is getting used to being in a home with four other dogs, and she will have to learn to share. She enjoys playing with balls. Although she is not allowed to run at the moment, I can see the gleam in her eyes when she gets one in her mouth. She is a little suspicious of strangers, but warms up quickly. She has met a few children here, and seems fine with them. I was told she is not good with cats, so the resident cats here are in hiding. She was great during the car ride to her new foster home. She has some obedience, but definitely needs more training. She pulls on her leash, and will jump up for attention. It won't take much to teach her good manners. She is a smart girl who will do well with training. Emily is very motivated by food, and even feels comfortable enough to ask for people food. She is not crate-trained, and protests a bit when asked to stay in one for a while. Part of that is her reluctance to be alone. She was never alone while she was with her former family. She would be OK with other dogs as long as she could be alpha. She has a dominant streak, and even these huge changes lately have not broken her spirit. We are working on getting her pictures on the site so you can all see how pretty she is.

Emily #3

Adopted!

Emily is a sweet, obedient 4-5 year old German Shepherd. Emily enjoys romping around the yard with human friends and going for leashed walks around the neighborhood. Emily loves attention and will roll over at the drop of a hat for you to rub her belly. Emily is crate-trained and house-trained. She is not an escape artist or a chewer. She is not overly protective, but will let you know something is amiss if needed. Some of Emily's favorite things are rawhide bones and being "baby-talked" to. She is very responsive and always willing to please her owner. Unfortunately Emily does not appreciate the company of other dogs. She could be placed in a home with a cat, but would need to be trained further not to chase them. Emily is also recovering nicely from heartworm treatment. Emily is full of sweetness and wants desperately to be placed in a home. Her past life only brought her litters of puppies, and fly-bitten ears. Emily deserves to be comforted and enjoyed, and will have many years of love to give to the right family. Could you be them? Emily has been patiently waiting for someone to give her a chance. We hope you'll keep her in mind if you're looking for a kind-hearted, joyful dog, who always has a smile on her face! Emily is being fostered in Maryland. DBMD.
Adopted: 12/22/04.

Emma

Adopted!

Hi, My name is Emma. I am a very sweet well mannered 8 year old spayed female German Shepherd. I am looking for a good home. I like to go on walks and do great on a lead, but I am also happy to just lie around. I am quiet and responsible in the house, eat well and I am house trained. My foster parents says I am perfect in every way, and they are happy that I get along with the other dog and the two cats. So you may be asking how come I am looking for a new home? I am a victim of divorce. I want a home to live out the rest of my days, get treats, walks and get and give affection. I have basic obedience and will come running when you call my name. Please consider adding me to your home, you will be glad you did, and so will I. Also, I'm an inside dog, not a lawn ornament, and need to be close to my humans.

Emma #2

Adopted!

Little Emma is looking for a permanent home. Only 3 months old, yet she was dumped in an animal shelter but quickly rescued. Now she is enjoying her new VGSR foster home. She is learning the crate, to potty outside, and how to wrestle with dogs much larger that herself. It is very exhuasting learning all this, so she also takes lots of naps. Despite a rough start in life, Emma is outgoing, social, and very friendly. She is very smart because she is a pure-bred German Shepherd. Emma bonded to her foster family immediately and they will find it hard to give her up. VGSR puppies will only be adopted to homes where someone is home most of the time to train and care for a youngster like Emma. Shepherd experience is preferred. Emma is being fostered in Maryland.

Emma #3

Adopted!

Emma has led a very tragic life to date. Emma came to her foster home from the Richmond Animal Shelter and little is known of her previous life other than she was surrendered because she was pregnant. She's had very poor care in her life; her front upper and lower teeth are severely worn down or broken off in what may be a case of trying to escape being caged. She's a German shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix estimated to be six years old, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccinations. She is a very trusting and loving girl. She gets along with other dogs, big or small and shows no interest in cats (her foster home has four other dogs). Emma is very people-oriented, a little shy at first, but craves human attention and companionship. She rides great in a car, walks well on a leash, prefers to be inside with her family, understands sit and likes to give either paw to offer her friendship. She is a quiet and calm dog and not prone to getting into mischief. Even though her front teeth are missing, her molars are intact, in good shape and she's able to eat regular dry dog food without problems. Emma is an excellent companion for a laid back owner. She is very happy to be with her human friends. MBPMA
Adopted: 10/03/07.

Emma #4

Adopted!

With a broken heart, Emma was surrendered to VGSR by her owner after almost four years due to some health issues of the owner that prohibited her from taking proper care of Emma. Beautiful Emma is now a little out of sorts from being uprooted from her home, and separated from her littermate (who has been adopted). Emma is obviously a very sensitive dog who may do best in a quiet home. She would be a great dog for anyone with any medical issues or that generally wants a calm, quiet dog. Emma is perfect on a leash, and loves any attention given to her, although she is not demanding in any way, shape or form. We are not aware of her having lived with kitties in the past, but is doing fantastic with the kitties in her foster home. Although she's not aggressive, she seems a bit scared of the other dogs in her foster home, and shows no interest in interacting with them, although she lived with her littermate and a pekingese without problems. Emma has excellent house manners, and is totally unobtrusive. In fact, she's so quiet, I often forget she's here. She is content just to "be". If you are an approved applicant and would like more information on Emma, please contact her foster mom at adoptemma@aol.com. DBMD
Adopted: 04/29/07.

Emmitt
(Evan's Adopted!)

Adopted!

Yep, this is me, Emmitt, on the right side of the picture posing with my brother Evan. I do believe I am the more handsome one but don't tell Evan because it does cause a 'bone of contention' between us, if you know what I mean! Although we love each other dearly, it's ok if we go to separate forever homes. I am a big lover boy that likes to come curl up next to you and give lots of wet sloppy kisses. I would do best in a home with older children or just adults since I can be a little grumpy if little ones were to pull on my ears, tail or steal my toys. I take commands from adults and older kids much better! My brother and I are both fully house- and crate-trained. We love to go to the doggy park and we get along well with other well-behaved dogs. We shy away from the dogs that have too much energy for our tastes. We have not met a cat yet so I'm not sure how I would react and I'm not sure how Evan would react either. We receive many postive comments on how laid-back we are for puppies! Evan is a little more adventurous than I am and he is far more tolerant of little kids. He likes to come over and give kisses to our foster mom but then he goes and lays down in his favorite spot by the bay window in the kitchen. Both Evan and I are German Shepherd mixes born on May 21. (Our dad was probably a lab/hound mix of some sort). Our mother was a gorgeous German Shepherd named Bunny and we were born in our foster mom's home so we have grown up with a lot of love and attention from day 1! We both have learned the command "sit" and we are working on "come" and "stay" along with learning how to not pull on the leash. Do you have room in your heart and home for one or both of us? RKVA

Emmy Lou

Adopted!

Emmy Lou is a five-year-old, spayed, female German Shepherd Dog. She is tall, long, fine-boned and lean. She was given up by her former owners before they moved. She's a wonderful dog; she smiles and wags her entire body when someone greets her and she just loves the attention. Emmy Lou is scared of storms and can jump a four foot fence. She has no desire to wander off, however, just wants to be with her people. She walks nicely on a leash and stays in a taller fence with no problems. She's just beginning crate training, because she had always been kept outside. She gets along very well with other dogs, both male and female, but cats are unknown. You can contact her foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions or would like to meet this beautiful girl. JBVA
Adopted: 10/10/05.

Enzo

Adopted!

Meet Enzo! He is one big, handsome, hunk of dog. Enzo is two years old, neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all of his vaccines, including a vaccine for Lyme disease. He is fine around other dogs and has been raised with an infant and a six-year-old child. He has not ever met a cat so we don't have any idea of how he feels about felines. Enzo is house-trained, crate-trained, rides well in a car, has had some obedience training, likes to play with toys, and is a very affectionate fellow. He is a bit shy when he first meets you, but I was getting kisses from him very shortly after our introduction. Enzo has been well cared for by his owner and is a very striking example of a pure-bred German Shepherd. SLVA
Adopted: 05/22/04.

Ernie #2

Adopted!

What a difference a day makes! One day I was a lonely stray wandering the streets with Bert and finding it hard to get a meal, then I was in a noisy shelter worried that my time was up. Now I'm in a loving foster home, getting three meals a day and lots of attention. My foster mom says I'm too skinny, but once I put on about 10 pounds, I'll be really handsome. She also tells me that I'm affectionate, gentle, alert and have a very sweet disposition. I've been doing a lot of tail wagging lately, showing everyone how happy I am now. I'm a "leaner", and when I'm close to my humans, I like to press against their legs to be petted. I'm about 3 years old and love to play with people as well as other dogs. With three dogs in the house, things can get very loud and I make sure my voice is heard. I haven't had any obedience training, but I'm a fast learner and I'm picking up house rules easily. I enjoy going for car rides or walks with my foster family. KHVA
Adopted: 11/30/06.

Ernie #3

Adopted!

Ernie is a young male, mostly shepherd mix, about 1.5 years old. He looks pretty serious in these pictures, but he has a kind face and he is still very much a playful puppy. He's about 65 pounds and will fill out as he gets some good food in him and as he matures. Ernie is good with other dogs and really enjoys their company. He was also good with children at a recent adoption event, but he is still very much a child himself, so older children would be better because they could better enjoy playing with Ernie. You can contact Ernie's foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. Fenced yard strongly preferred. Ernie is neutered and recently vaccinated. JBVA
Adopted: 03/11/08.

Eva

Adopted!

Eva was picked up as a stray, and gave birth to her pups a week after she came into VGSR foster care. We have 10 pups; 6 males and 4 females. Eva was an attentive, snappy mom, who didn't like people around her pups. That lasted only a short time. She now welcomes visitors and likes the attention that she and the pups receive. She temp-tested well with other dogs and cats in the shelter, but so far she has shown no interest in meeting the other dogs and in fact, seems a little intimidated. She does not like the cat. This may change when she no longer is caring for her pups. She's well-mannered in the house and there's no need to crate her. She walks well on the leash, rides well and knows some basic commands. She likes to lie outside on the porch and watch people and traffic, but seldom barks at anything. She's an easy, gentle GSD and great company. Eva needs time to gain some weight and get her girlish figure back - she and her pups will be available for adoption after 4/5/06. GSAVA

Adopted: 04/06/06.

VGSR is looking for families where there is someone home most of the day to give them the love and attention they need. Come and meet them at VGSR adoption days. The pups will be available for adoption after 04/05/06. GSAVA

Evie

Adopted!

Beautiful Evie was found as a stray by animal control. She was very scared in the animal shelter and happy to be out now. Evie is a lovely sable, bred in the classic European style. 2 years old, she weighs 55 pounds and is very petite. Evie walks well on a leash and listens to her handler very carefully. Evie is well-behaved and extremely smart. We will update her information soon, she may have some special training. Evie is in Northern Virginia.

Evvie

Adopted!

This sweet one is named Evvie. She LOVES other dogs, the dog park and walks. It seems pretty Evvie did not have much love in her life until now. She loves to snuggle with you and to be told how pretty she is. Evvie is a lovely black-and-tan, German Shepherd. About 2 years old, she weighs 68 pounds. She is smart and eager to learn. This special girl will need a permanent family that can shower her with attention and kindness. She will bond very quickly to her new home. Evvie has a strong herding instinct therefore no small children or cats. This girl is a little nervous and needs to build her confidence up. She will require a strong alpha leader to put her in the right direction. In return, she will be devoted and loyal to you forever. Evvie has been with us for some time and needs to find her forever home. Can you be that special person for her? Evvie is being fostered in Northern Virginia and we love her. LCVA

Faith

Adopted!

Many of you have kept up with my story and have visited me at adoption days. I would like to thank all of you out there who have been very supportive of myself and my puppies. I've become the momma of foster dogs. I've started showing them the ropes in the foster home. I'm very loving and gentle. Everyone who knows me can't believe how much I've blossomed out of my shell, sometimes I can still be a little shy but all and all I'm trying real hard to accept that life is much better then what I once had in my past. I can be trusted to have full roam of the house without a crate. My foster mom has told me that I've become the real mommy of the pack, I love to take care of the other fosters that come in and also the puppies at adoption days. Currently I'm showing Beenkie my new foster candidate the ropes. Please come visit me at adoption days, you'll probably be seeing me play with some of the other great dogs that visit adoption days. If you would like to help me, please make a donation or sponsor me (see below). TDVA

Fang

Adopted!

Hi! My name if Fang. I was named after the movie "White Fang". I am a very loving 10-month-old, male German Shepherd mix. I love to play with everyone....people and doggies. It doesn't matter who. I love to be scratched and loved on, and I give great kisses. My foster mommy says so...I heard her. I am being crate trained and I am almost perfect. I fuss a few minutes, but then I settle down. I am house-trained. I LOVE playing with my foster brother and sisters. I have not yet met the cats. All I really need is a family of my very own. DGVA

Fawn

Adopted!

Hi, my name is Fawn and I am the shy girl of the bunch. I am a 3-month-old GSD mix pup who has brothers and sisters that are also looking for homes through VGSR. As my mom gets to know me a little more she will update my bio. I am already starting to be a little less shy and enjoy taking treats from her hand! EPMD

Fern

Adopted!

On paper my name is Fern, but my foster family likes to call me Talia which means "dew from heaven". When I first came to my foster home, I was pretty sick, but you can call me the come back kid because I am 110% better, loving life, and ready for you to take me home. My foster mom thinks I am just a little angel and can't believe I am so sweet and well behaved. I am house-trained, love my crate, love playing with my kong and never chew on anything that isn't mine. I also get along well with my foster siblings, but would prefer to have a home where I will get all the attention that I deserve and a human to call my own. My favorite things to do are to fetch my kong, so please, please will you throw it for me? I can really jump too, so give it a good toss. I bet I would love to play Frisbee if you have one. I also adore taking walks and I promise not to pull you too hard, but you might have to remind me when I get really excited. I was a bit shy around people at first, but I have learned to trust them, and now I give kisses and love to be petted. I promise to eagerly greet you when you come home if you promise to love me forever. If you have room in your heart and home for me, please contact michelle@michelleshort.com for more information.

Fifi

Adopted!

Hi! My name is Fifi. I am a small, 6-month-old puppy that is loving life at my foster home. I love playing with the other foster dogs. I know how to sit and I am learning other commands. I need some obedience training because I am so young. I'm too rambunctious for a home with children, so a home without them would be best. My foster mom says that I am just a wonderful friendly little girl. Hopefully soon, my forever parents will find me. RNVA

Fletch

Adopted!

Hi! My name is Fletch, and I am an affectionate, very friendly, neutered, male German Shepherd/Rottie mix. I love to play - with kids, balls, other dogs, you name it and I'll be happy to play with it. I'm pretty good at playing tug of war too! I practically pick up my leash to go for a walk and one of my VERY favorite activities is going for a R I D E in the car. I am house-broken, leash-trained, and I know my basic obedience commands. I have had all of my shots (ouch!), and am making an excellent recovery from recent knee surgery. My knee feels as good as new, and I am trying to get back to another favorite activity, which is chasing squirrels up trees. I would love to find a permanent home with a couple of kids for me to play with and a fenced yard. Just think, I could be your kid's new best friend. Please do not overlook me because I am not a pure-bred GSD. Thanks for your consideration, Yours Truly, Fletch.

Floyd

Adopted!

Are you looking for a dog with character, that you can take anywhere and have fun with? Look no further. Introducing Floyd. Floyd was named after the band Pink Floyd, and because he has a lot to say about the state of his world. Floyd is a 3-4 year old male. He is a very friendly boy who will excel at obedience, as he needs some "direction" in his life. Unfortunately Floyd was not well cared for in his previous life, and has contracted heartworm disease. After undergoing treatment, he'll be as good as new, but in the mean time, it will take a dedicated, patient family to make sure that Floyd gets and stays healthy. Because of the treatment involved in ridding his body of heartworms, Floyd will need close supervision to monitor his activity level during his recovery. Are you the family he's been looking for? Floyd is interested in cats, but seems to merely want to inspect them, and means no harm, however most cats don't take too kindly to his nose probing their bodies, and if the cat runs, he'll more than likely chase. Floyd is being fostered in Maryland. DBMD

Forrest

Adopted!

Forrest is a young male German Shepherd. He's probably about 1 1/2 years old. Forrest seems to like everyone and everything. He's got a fair amount of energy and likes to play with other dogs. He's very skinny now, at about 65 lbs, and needs to gain 10 to 15 lbs, which we're working on, and he's got a great appetite. Forrest was surrendered after his previous owners did not take care of him. He gets a bit scared and cowers when he is talked firmly too, and wants nothing more to do what's right - he just needs to be shown what is right and what is wrong. He's got the cutest ears that flop up and down when he runs, but normally stay upright.

Forrest #2

Adopted!

Forrest is a delight! He's lanky and a little off balance right now. He came via southern Virginia from someone who was keeping him crated way too long. He needs lots of exercise so he can build up his bones. He doesn't ask to go out but he's had no accidents in the house or his crate. For a puppy he's pretty calm BUT he is not quite sure of all his surroundings yet. He loves to play with the other dogs. He also likes to hang around with his foster mom. He's a little nervous on outings right now. And the poor thing can not ride in the car without his tummy becoming upset. All of this will get better with time and patience. Please come and meet Forrest at an adoption event near you. LTVA
Adopted: 04/12/06.

Foster

Adopted!

Foster is an energetic six-month-old Shepherd. She was found as a stray, but has learned how to live in a house in a matter of days. She loves to play with other dogs and even admire cats. She is a fast learner and has learned to sit on command (for a treat of course). This is a puppy, so she needs some positive house training and manners. Foster is very willing to learn and loves attention and treats. She also loves to cuddle. This girl deserves to be spoiled for the rest of her years. If you can offer her a place in your heart please e-mail Stephanie at bullynpug@adelphia.net. She is being fostered in Eldersburg, Maryland.

Foster #2

Adopted!

"Foster" the foster is an exuberant 2 (-ish) year old, neutered male. Foster is a very happy-go-lucky kinda guy (translate into: untrained!) who is great with other dogs. Foster is fully vetted and ready to go to your home, presuming you are ready to sign up for obedience classes (*grin*). Foster will need to go to a cat-free home, and a home in which his owner(s) either leash walk for exercise or have a 6 foot fence, as Foster can easily scale his foster mom's 4 1/2 foot split rail/wire fence. Otherwise, Foster is a fun dog to have around, and would love a home with another dog and kids to play with. Foster is crate-trained and perfectly healthy. The vet even says his hips feel nice and tight (probably won't have a problem with dysplasia as he gets older)! Due to Foster's natural athletic skills, he might do well in agility. He also comes when called as witnessed after he jumped his foster mom's fence - an added benefit for someone who is eager to do advanced off-leash training, once he learns the basics.

Foxie

Adopted!

Foxie is an extremely sweet 7-month-old, female GSD. She loves everyone she meets and enjoys playing with people and dogs alike. Based on limited interaction, she seems to be okay with cats, too. Foxie has beautiful markings on her face and good form. She will not be a large GSD, although she is underweight at her current 53 pounds. Foxie is very good-natured and loves to be played with and handled. She settled in and made herself at home very quickly with her foster family. She is happy to be close to her human family, but does not cling. She was very well-behaved when her foster mom groomed her and clipped her nails, revelling in the attention. Foxie is very alert and inquisitive. She is learning her basic commands and needs someone who will continue those lessons. She was just spayed and is current on all her shots. She will make a great companion for a family who will give her love and attention and she will return it hundredfold. She is being fostered in Northern Virginia. KHVA
Adopted: 08/18/04.

Foxy

Adopted!

Foxy was an owner-surrender to a rural animal shelter and for the love of me I can't figure out why. She's a GSD mix and the sweetest, happiest little pup I have every fostered. She just loves everything and everybody. It's hard for her to contain herself when someone comes - she has to be the first at the door, the first to jump up and the first to give kisses. I'll bet I say "down" and "off" a hundred times a day, but she can't stop. She has to see what I'm doing and absolutely loves to play...with dogs or with people...loves the water in the kiddie pool. She runs, jumps, hops, whatever, when there's somebody around. In the house, she's fairly well-mannered, chews on her bones, loves the squeaky toys, follows me around to make sure she doesn't miss anything, and still has lots of puppy nap attacks. There's no need to crate her. She knows "sit" and "come", walks pretty well on a leash, rides well in the car - I can't say enough good things about her. She just is a fun kind of puppy and keeps everyone entertained. The cat whacked her a couple of times and she's really good about leaving him alone now, just watches him. If you want a fun-loving, happy puppy, Foxy is the right one - she just needs a family with lots of love and patience (and someone to say "down" and "off" a hundred times a day). GSAVA
Adopted: 08/13/05.

Frankie

Adopted!

So where's Annette? Frankie is just waiting to be your best boyfriend ever! He is tall, dark, handsome and oh so affectionate. He greets everyone with a sweeping tail wag and then moves in for a kiss! We are just getting so know him, so we will post more information about him as we get to know him better. He was a very good boy riding in the car and seems to get along just fine with most dogs. He does not seem to have much training, but he is VERY smart and very eager to please. SLVA

Franco

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Franco and I'm named after a retired NFL football player. It's an appropriate name because I'm pretty rough and tough. However don't let my size intimidate you as I'm also a lovable, huggable guy. I love snuggling and getting belly rubs. My favorite activities are going for car rides and playing ball. My foster mom gives me a hard time because I don't like to give the ball back. The game is much more fun when she chases me around. I'm told I'm a smart guy. I know some basic commands but I'm eager to learn more if someone would take the time to teach me. Before VGSR saved me from the scary shelter, I had caught a nasty bug which turned into pneumonia. For a couple weeks I was pretty sick, but VGSR has taken great care of me and I've been feeling much better recently and am ready for a forever home; however my doc tells me that I'll have to take my medicine for a few more weeks to make sure I stay strong and healthy. If you think you could be my forever family, please come meet me at a Northern Virginia adoption event! HEVA

Frannie
Sorry, no pictures...

Adopted!

My name is Frannie. I'm told I'm a German Shepherd mix. BUT people look at me strange so, I'm beginning to wonder about that myself. A nice kind lady showed up with her VGSR t-shirt and took me in out of the bad place. I will be forever thankful and hope I will find my own forever home. I'm really small and I love to have my tummy rubbed. You can come and meet me and an adoption day event. LTVA

Frau

Adopted!

Frau is a black-and-tan, 6-year-old, female, GSD (with papers). She is a large dog (about 110 pounds), and was too much dog for her former owners who didn't do anything with her and didn't want her any more, so she is now in foster care with VGSR. She has an effective "intruder alert" bark, and will be protective of her home and family, but otherwise seems to be a gentle girl. She got along well with her former owners' grandchildren, and has acted well with the other dogs in her foster home. She has learned to play fetch at her new foster home, and enjoys playing with a tennis ball. She is enjoying her increased level of exercise, and will lose weight as she gets in shape. She is spayed, heartworm negative, and UTD on all shots/preventative. Frau was an outdoor dog at her former home, so her house manners will need some work and she needs some more socialization. Given her size, an experienced GSD handler is preferred and an obedience class is recommended to establish some basic commands. Frau is being fostered near Charlottesville, and you can contact her foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions.

Fred

Adopted!

In early January, Fred playfully walked up to my wife, two dogs and me along the rocks of the James River. Since then he hasn't left our sides. We guess that he is nearly 2 years old. He is neutered and very intelligent. Very ball driven - able to learn fetch and hand commands in two days. At nearly 85 lbs., Fred is house-trained and thankfully calm for a Shepherd his age. He walks well on a leash and enjoys the role of guardian. Great dog that we would love to keep but we simply don't have the room. Fred is currently living in Richmond.
Adopted: 02/06/05.

Freida

Adopted!

Freida is a Christmas puppy that ended up in the animal shelter. She may not be a purebred German Shepherd, but she needs a good home, too. Freida is about 10 weeks old and a very active little girl. She is as cute as she can be. Her foster mom is begining her education immediately so she will be ready to join your family. Freida is a very lucky puppy.

Fritz

Adopted!

Fritz is amazing. After being dumped in the night drop at the shelter, he has moved on with his life and is looking for a new home. If you are a first time German Shepherd person or if you have years of experience, Fritz may be the boy for you. He has exceptional house manners, is crate-trained, but can be trusted loose in the house on his own. He is very mellow and will be more comfortable after he loses about 20 pounds. A handsome black and tan, Fritz has all the classic German Shepherd characteristics. He is highly intelligent, very observant and eager to please. A very good listener, Fritz only needs know what you want him to do, and he will gladly oblige. He is quick to learn. Fritz is also supposed to be good with children. He knows the basics, like sit, down, shake, etc. Come meet Fritz soon. CBVA
Adopted: 08/21/05.

Fritz #2

Adopted!

Fritz is a handsome, classic Black-and-Tan, 4-year-old, male GSD. He was given up by his previous owner who claimed he was uncontrollable around other dogs. After four weeks of patient and firm training in his foster home and lots of socialization around other dogs, Fritz has responded wonderfully and has turned himself into a well-mannered and obedient GSD. He has exceptional house manners, is house-trained, crate-trained, and can be trusted loose in the house on his own. He loves car rides and can't wait to go outside and have a nice romp with the other shepherds in his foster home. He will be more comfortable after he loses about 15 pounds. He is highly intelligent, very observant and a very good listener. Fritz only needs know what you want him to do, and he will gladly oblige. He is good around all the people he has met including children. He is supposed to be good with cats. He knows the basics commands like sit, down, shake, etc. He is fostered in Northern Virginia. Come meet Fritz soon at a VGSR adoption days or e-mail his foster family at mcantrelll@msn.com if you have any questions. CMVA

Fritzie

Adopted!

Fritzie is a stunning black-and-cream German Shepherd girl. She has a sweet, playful personality and really wants to please. She loves her walks and hikes in the woods. And if you scratch Fritzie just above her tail - she will dance for you. Fritzie has one lazy ear - which makes her even more endearing. Fritzie is crate-trained and house-trained, and does not have any chewing habits. She thinks cats are as fun to play with (i.e. chase) as her favorite ball, so she would do best in a home without cats. Fritzie shows no aggression - just a fun-loving desire to play. Fritzie came to the Rescue quite thin, with a chewed ear and a bit nervous. Now she is gaining weight, settling in to be a real love, and a real beauty! You can e-mail Susan at run4stacatto@yahoo.com if you have any questions. LSMD

Frosty

Adopted!

Frosty is about 6 months old. She weighs around 40 lbs and looks to be a white GSD with a bit of Samoyed or Spitz or something else white and fluffy. She is good with cats and likes to play with other dogs. She also rides well in the car and is making terrific progress on being potty trained. She is crate trained and is very quiet and comfortable in the crate. Vices - she is a bit possessive of her food and treats when other dogs come near. Frosty does not fight over food, but she does become rather vocal if another dog ventures too close to her food bowl. And for some unknown reason, she barks at a photograph of a litter of dogs that we have hanging in our family room. This is hilarious - if you hang the photo - she will not stop barking. If you take it off the wall on show it to her, she sniffs it and is quiet. If you hang it back up, the process repeats itself. Forgot to mention that she LOVES kids and is very good with them.

Fuzzy

Adopted!

What do you mean that I'm not a German Shepherd ? Well, OK, I am probably a husky or elkhound mix, but I am being considered an honorary GSD until I find a new home. I got lost around a month ago and apparently no one came looking for me. Sure don't understand why because I am a soft, sweet, wonderful girl. I am a middle-aged, calm, affectionate pooch that really doesn't cause any trouble at all. I love to snuggle on the couch, go for rides and take walks. Did I mention that I am totally house-trained and never, ever, chew on anything? I get along with other dogs just dandy after I get to know them. I promise to be a very good girl if you'll just give me a chance. Fuzzy's foster mom can only keep her for a short time, so it is imperative that she finds her new home soon.
Adopted: 07/21/04.

Frosty #2

Adopted!

Frosty is a young male, probably no more than 1-2 years old. He has a beautiful white coat with a little streak of red or brown along the ridge of his back. He is very friendly, seems to be house-trained although he's probably not going to be good with cats. Frosty is very friendly, energetic, and willing to please, so he will take readily to training. He will sit on command and is learning to walk on a leash. Frosty didn't get the time and attention from his prior owner that German Shepherd Dogs want and need. He will alert you to anything out of the ordinary but he is not a nuisance barker. He is very light on his feet, and a very athethic jumper, but he has not tried to escape a 4' fence. Frosty is in a foster home near Charlottesville, VA, but makes occasional trips to the northern Virginia area, and is more than willing to meet anyone half way most any time. You can contact his foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com with any questions or to set up a meeting.

Gabby

Adopted!

Gabby is a 3-4 year old female who is super-sweet, just had a litter and was missing her babies, but has cheered up in her foster home. As her confidence increased, we learned she can be a little bossy with other dogs, but gets along fine with all her foster siblings except our alpha female. She would also be fine as an only dog. Previously she lived outside, but is very quickly learning house-training and basic obedience. Loves to sleep on the bed, lives to cuddle in your lap, or will lean into you. One of the sweetest dogs I have ever met, she loves to be loved. She does fine with children, not sure about cats, and although we initially thought she was good with small dogs, it appears now that she is not. Likes to play with toys, play in the water, and wrestle with other dogs, but settles down quickly and enjoys just being with you. She charms everyone she meets, and will make someone a tremendous companion. Are you ready to fall under her spell? KBMD
Adopted: 04/08/04.

Gal

Adopted!

Gal is an extremely sweet 3-4 year old female. She is spayed and up to date on all shots. Gal is great with other dogs including my little Yorkie. She is also good with cats. She weights around 78 pounds but is over weight and should lose at least 10. Gal used to live with three kids and she was very gentle and tolerant of them. Gal is house- and crate-trained. She knows sit, lie down, and quiet. Gal is a very good watch dog, and only barks for a good reason. Gal loves to cuddle and practically "melts" when you are giving her attention.

Galileo

Adopted!

Galileo is a 1.5-year-old, black, German Shepherd that was brought to the shelter in West Virginia as a stray on July 26, 2007. He appears to be pure-bred. He has beautiful brown and gold eyes that are striking against his black fur. Once he puts on a little needed weight, he will be a magnificent looking Shepherd. Galileo has a pretty easy-going personality and temperament. He loves to be petted, and practically sits in your lap for much-needed affection. He does not pull on the leash, but still needs a little more training and discipline in other areas. (We're working on it!) He is having a blast running around the back yard with my three other Shepherds, and does well with my two cats. He is neutered, dewormed, and up-to-date on shots. He's ready to go! SSuVA

Garth

Adopted!

Garth here. As promised, I'm updating my profile to tell you about some good news! Yes, everyone that meets me still says I am one good looking boy! I am well behaved and house-trained, too. The big change for me is that I have become a gentleman around other big dogs! I've come a long way! My foster brothers and Mom have really worked hard at helping me get along with other dogs. Now when I meet dogs I do the normal sniff, sniff and then let's play! I have become really good pals with my foster brothers and look to them for direction. Since I've gotten used to having other dogs around, I'd probably do well in a home with another big dog, so I still have a buddy to hang out with. My profile has been here for a while, but that's because I wasn't feeling very well when I came to the rescue. It took some time but we figured out that I have EPI. EPI isn't that bad, it just means I have to get enzymes with my food and stay on a pretty strict diet. I feel great and I'm sure hoping to find a forever home soon. TCVA

Gary

Adopted!

Gary is a VERY tall dog - an impressive fellow indeed. Right now he is about 20 pounds underweight, so when he fills in he will tip the scales at around 100 lbs. He gets along just fine with all other dogs and cats too. We dangled PeeWee the test cat in front of him and he totally ignored her. Tried it again and he still ignored her. He loads up into the truck on command and is a very good, calm rider. Just curled up in the back of my Blazer and relaxed for the ride! Gary is housebroken. He is very friendly to all he meets - adults and kids alike. He managed to lick a few babies before we got him out of Petsmart tonight. Gary's right ear is a bit floppy, so it gives his huge head a gentle, soft look. We want to get a couple of pounds on him before we get him neutered. Have also found out that he likes to snuggle on the couch and have his belly rubbed. A gentle giant would be a very apt description of this good dog. He likes to snuggle up and "talk" to you while you pet him. Gary was a very good boy at the vet's office and everyone there fell in love with him.

Gator

Adopted!

My name is Gator, and I am probably a GSD/Newfie mix who is 15 weeks old. I am going to be a VERY LARGE boy when I grow up. Good thing that I am so friendly, eh? I had a pretty rough start and had to have some surgery a couple of weeks ago, but now everything is fine and you would never know that I had been sick! So, if you are looking for a big hairy boy to complete your family, pick me! CPVA

Gator #2

Adopted!

Well, now that I have been in foster care for a little bit, my foster mom said that my bio should say that I am an all-around GOOD boy. I am just fine with kitties, I walk very nicely on a leash, and I do not even try to lift my leg on anything when we are taking a walk. I also enjoy riding in the car and Balboa is teaching me how to play with other dogs. I give really nice hugs too - I put my paws around your neck and pull you in close! I am still a little afraid of the tall man who lives here, but I am making progress every day. I also enjoy a good cuddle on the sofa, so couch privileges would be a bonus in my new home! SLVA

Gaysha

Adopted!

This beautiful girl is Gaysha! At 16 months old, she was surrendered by her owners to the pound citing that she was mouthy and bad with other dogs. Turns out they were just too lazy to train a PUPPY! Having had zero training, she still has all of her exuberance, but is learning her manners. Not to worry...she is house-trained. Gaysha does EXTREMELY well with other dogs, and is currently happily residing with our three. She's also good with children. Under no circumstances will she be placed in a home with cats, however. Gaysha needs a home with time to exercise her (tired puppies are good puppies), and the patience to train her. She needs a firm correction and good supervision. All the training and treats she receives, though, will be paid back tenfold in love. She's simply a large (62 pounds...should be over 70) puppy with plenty of energy to go around who wasn't given a fair chance to begin with! She's currently being fostered in Front Royal, VA. ACAVA

Geordie

Adopted!

Geordie is a striking, black with tan, two year old male. He is 72 pounds and much more handsome than a picture can show you. Geordie does well on a leash, is house trained and is very smart. Geordie has some special needs. He is very scared of most situations and needs someone to help him gain confidence. Geordie does well with other dogs, cats and older children. He will easily devote himself to you. An experienced person, with lots of time for him, will help Geordie become a brave, confident shepherd. Investing lots of patience and love in Geordie could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done.

George

Adopted!

George is such a handsome, well-mannered GSD about 3 years old. His heart is broken right now since his owner left him in a shelter so he could serve his country in Iraq. One of our wonderful volunteers found him on his second day so he is now safe and warm with us. George does seem very sad and does not feel like eating much, but when he does decide to leave his bed he wants to climb right in your lab. He sat and read the paper curled next to my husband this morning on the couch. George hasn't wanted to play much with his foster brothers and sisters yet, but a game of ball changed him into a playful pup again. He brings the ball right back and drops it at your feet then looks at your face and the ball repeatedly until you throw it again. George also talks with delight (moans) as if in conversation when you rub his belly or ears. He has good house manners and needs someone that will love him forever. George is in Virginia Beach.

Georgia

Adopted!

Georgia is a sweet female German Shepherd who came from a rural Virginia shelter. She is 1-2 years old, current on shots, and spayed. Georgia tested positive for heartworms but is asymptomatic, has now been treated, and will recover fully. She weighs about 60 pounds, and has a nice short fawn-colored coat. She walks well on a leash and is an easy-going gal. Georgia is friendly with other dogs, but is more interested in her human companions. She is wonderful with strangers, not a barker, no signs of any aggression. She would be wonderful for a retiree or someone just looking for a close companion. Her exercise needs are not great and could be met with a couple daily walks and/or some time in a fenced yard. Georgia was introduced to some kittens in a crate and basically ignored them even when one of the kittens reacted defensively. Georgia is being fostered in the Charlottesville area, and her foster home can be reached at vadogrescue@aol.com.

Georgy Girl

Adopted!

Hey there, Georgy Girl - (do you remember that song?) Anyway, please meet Georgy Girl. Georgy has come such a long way in a couple of months. When we first met her, she was so skinny that her backbone and ribs protruded and her coat was brittle and dull. Look at her now - her coat is thick, shiny and oh so soft. And there's nothing skinny about this girl now! Georgy is house-trained, loves to go for walks down at the river, greatly enjoys a good cuddle and does not need to be crated while you are at work. She can easily jump a four foot fence and does not hesitate to do so. It is her only bad habit! She likes to jump the fence and then sit by the car in our driveway. Georgy gets along fine with other dogs after a proper introduction, but she would love to have all of your attention to herself. This dog bonds incredibly strongly to men in particular. Her favorite activity is to cuddle with John on the couch with her head in his lap, so permission to lounge on the sofa is mandatory with her adoption. SLVA

Geranium

Adopted!

Geranium has recently been spayed and has recovered from unterine/teat infections. She is eating well and gaining some much needed weight. She is house-trained and even does well with free roam of the house for short periods of time when I'm out running errands. She is an active and playful dog but settles down nicely in the house. She rides perfectly in the car. Geranium is a young dog that would benefit from obedience classes and more socialization. She's going to make some lucky family a great pet!

Gertrude

Adopted!

Gertrude is new to VGSR foster care so we're just learning about her. She is an exceptionally sweet dog, greets everyone in a friendly manner and is loving the attention. She is getting along well with the puppies and the bigger dogs, but barked at the cat outside. She has good house manners, walks well on the leash and is very gentle taking treats. She had no problem going in the crate, but didn't want the door fastened. So far there has been no need to crate her. We will post updates as we learn more about her. Please come meet Gertrude at our Adoption Days. GSAVA

Gertrude #2

Adopted!

Gertrude is a sweet, female GSD that was taken to animal control when she was picked up as a stray. The animal control was / is keeping all of the big dogs outside despite the heat. She was covered with fleas, ticks and has numerous fly bites on her ears. When I first met her she had the saddest eyes. Gertrude was immediately taken to the vet who estimated her age at 4-6 years. Despite the conditions she was in he gave her a great bill of health. It is apparent she was used for breeding and also has had a lot of training. She knows sit, stay, lie down, and is very obedient. Her front teeth have been worn down. The vet said this was attributed to her having had a hard life in the past. After the vet, she went straight to the doggie wash and was treated with the works. She is absolutely a gorgeous, sweet GSD. She is very dignified and has the best manners. She gets along with her foster sister and both of her foster brothers. All of the staff at the vet and doggie wash gave her rave reviews at her behavior and all agree she is a beautiful girl. My guess is that she was used for breeding, kept in crate most of her life and then was discarded. The first day I put her in the crate when I left for work. When I came home, I was greeted at the door by Gertrude. The second day she managed to get out again. I have come to realize that Gertrude really doesn't like the crate but will go in it and does well if she is in a room with her foster siblings. I discovered this when I moved her crate. She also does very well in an open home and loves her doggie bed. She is very laid back, and is content to lie quietly at your feet. I really want Gertrude to finally enjoy her life and get pampered as she deserves. I am happy to say that she now has a sparkle in her eye. She an absolute great GSD and would be a treasure to any family. If you would like more information and can give Getrude a great home, email dianedz@gmail.com if you have any questions or would like to meet Gertrude. DDVA

Ginger

Adopted!

Ginger, a three-year-old, black-and-tan beauty, is new to the Rescue so we are still learning about her. Her owners gave her up when an elderly relative came to live with them. She is a quiet, well mannered girl who is anxious to love and be loved. She's a real people dog and a belly rub ranks high on her list of favorite things. She walks very well on a leash and enjoys long walks with her foster mom. Ginger knows basic commands, although some refresher training would be good. Her prior owners report that she does well with children and she enjoyed those who said hello to her at the recent Adoption Day. Ginger doesn't get along with small dogs. She weighs 79 lbs., but with some exercise could take off about 10 lbs. to be at her perfect weight. Ginger is spayed and up to date on her shots. This sweet girl deserves a loving home. She is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Ginger #5

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Ginger. I'm a 5-ish-year-old, female German Shepherd. It's quite worrisome to me that my family no longer wanted me, especially around the holidays, I can't figure out what I might've done wrong, but my foster mommy and daddy tell me I'm a good girl. I love to play with tennis balls and enjoy going for walks. Of course, petting and scratching behind the ears is best. I seem to do OK with my fosters mommy's cats, but they're very used to unfamiliar dogs like me, so care would need to be taken if introduced into a home with kitties. Other dogs are fine, but I appear to have been an "only dog" in my past, and don't know how to play with other dogs. I don't like to be bullied by another dog, and I will stick up for myself if they get too bossy or "fresh". I appear to be house-trained and the doggie doc says I'm very healthy. On the top of my New Year's list is a new home and a fluffy bed, and bonies in my stocking. Got room? DBMD
