VGSR's Adopted German Shepherd Dogs, A-B

Updated on Saturday, 04/12/2008

5 Pups

Adopted!

We have 5 German Shepherd puppies that need homes. They are now 3 months old they need homes. I have had them to the vet for their second distemper and a checkup. They will be getting their final shots next week. All are healthy. I have been working on leash training and housebreaking. They are crate trained and used to riding in a car. They know cats and big dogs.

Aaron

Adopted!

Meet Aaron! He is about 2 years old and an absolute gentleman. Aaron is totally housebroken, gets along great with other dogs, and even gets along great with CATS! His most endearing quality is that he can actually hold hands with you. If you shake his paw, he will grip your hands with the pads on his feet. I have never before met another dog that did this. His foster mom has a special request from whatever lucky family adopts this wonderful dog - she wants a guarantee that he will get a small cup of vanilla ice cream once a week. You should see him enjoy this treat. He grabs the whole little plastic container in his mouth and relocates to a place where he can enjoy his ice cream without the other dogs trying to get it. He then holds it with his paws and licks the ice cream quite contentedly. One interesting thing about Aaron is that in the 5 months he has been in foster care, we have NEVER heard him bark. If you are looking for a dog that will sound an alarm when someone comes to the door, Aaron is not your guy. He is a lover, not a watchdog!

Abagael

Adopted!

Abagael is a gorgeous three-year-old, red and black German-conceived German Shepherd. Her father was Vasco Von der Maaraue and her mother was Karen Von der Maaraue. She is excellent with children, as her owner's 16-month-old will a testify, and will make a nice house pet for her next family. She has a high prey drive, but is fun to play with and listens to commands that she is given.

Abbie

Adopted!

Abbie is a beautiful, sweet, 16-month-old, all-black, mostly GSD. She has a little black lab in her, too. Her coat feels like silk, she likes other dogs, cats, and loves her 3 & 5-year-old children. Abbie will sit, stay, lie down; is house-broken, and is very gentle and obedient. She is the ideal family pet who loves treats, squeaky toys, balls, ropes; just about anything. Her family is moving in June and will be unable to take her with them. Abbie also has a new medical condition and a new family that can help her with her special needs. When Abbie was spayed in February, two weeks later she started having seizures. She is now on a medication daily called Phenobarbital, which is helping her control these seizures. Her medication costs about $5 a week. Abbie is fantastic! Can you open your heart and home for this special girl? She is living in Hampton Roads / Tidewater, Virginia.

Abbie #2

Adopted!

Abbie is about 16 months old and a lovely black-and-tan GSD. She was living on the street for a while and eating out of trash cans until a very nice family took her in and brought her to us. Abbie even had a bone wedged in her palate from her trashing days, poor girl. She is full of kisses and loves to eat every meal with gusto. Abbie is learning house manners, sit, and is crate-trained although she would rather be right in your lap. She is also learning to play, and runs happily then charges toward you full speed and sits immediately when she reaches you. She was fine with visiting children and okay with some other dogs. She needs to gain more weight but she should be fuller in no time with a good quality dog food. Abbie needs a home with lots of love to rebuild her confidence and mucho kisses. How about your home? She is living in the Virginia Beach area.

Abby

Adopted!

Abby, who is around 14 weeks old, has been raised with dogs, cats and kids. Her momma was a purebred GSD and her daddy was a man (or dog) of mystery. She has and adorable face and it looks like she is wearing eye-liner. If you are looking for a sweetie pie of a pup, please consider meeting our Abby.

Abby #3

Adopted!

Abby is a super-sweet white German Shepherd with a luxuriously soft coat. She is about 12 months old, with all the energy of an adolescent. She is around 70 pounds now and has some filling out to do. She is not housebroken, but she is making good progress in her foster home. She has an issue with submissive peeing, but is improving as she gains confidence. Abby gets along very well with other dogs, although she does have some dominant aspirations. We have been told she chases cats in a friendly way, and seems to love the children she has met at Petsmart. She is very athletic and adventurous. Abby is a very sensitive and intelligent GSD who needs a knowledgable stay-at-home human who will continue to teach her with utmost patience and love. She is learning very quickly what to do and not to do, and seems very eager to please. She would do best in a home with another dog to help her burn off her puppy energy.

Abby #4

Adopted!

Straight from the shelter and into foster care, not too much is known about her at this point. We're estimating her age at 1 - 2 years, and she weighs in at a dainty 50 pounds, though she could stand to gain another 10. Once she fills out a bit, she'll be quite a nice sized girl, not too small and not too big. Just right! She has an absolutely WONDERFUL temperament and rides very well in the car. She has loved everyone she has met...men, women, children and other dogs and is currently residing with a 9-year-old girl and a 100 pound, 2-year-old German Shepherd brother. She does seem somewhat "interested" in our horses, but no barking...just an intent stare! No experience with cats as of yet. Her first afternoon with us, we had to slip in to PetSmart for some supplies and she was quite the social butterfly, greeting everyone with a wagging tail and doggie kisses. She's currently sacked out asleep on the floor with her foster brother, recovering from her trip! No house-training accidents as of yet, and she has not yet been crated, so updates will come on that. She walks pretty well on the leash with just a bit of exploratory pulling. She does have a habit of wanting to jump up to greet you and she also thinks she's a 50 pound lap dog and is quite content to crawl into your lap and sit ... or the couch. She LOVES the couch!! We're going to work with her on greeting people while sitting, but she seems very trainable and is quite eager to please. She would be a wonderful companion to anyone, either as an only dog or a playmate for your pooch. If you have an approved applicant that sounds like a good match, please feel free to email us at savingshepherds@yahoo.com. ACAVA

Abigail #2

Adopted!

This baby girl is soooo sweet. She doesn't seem to be afraid of anything or anyone. She may bark (and wow, what a bark this little girl has) on initial meetings but warms up quick. She's a little thin right now but eats really well and likes her snacks. Loves to play with the other dogs and craves attention with people. She doesn't like to be crated, but after a few minutes in the crate she is fine. She's sleeping through the night now out of the crate and has had no accidents. She will make a good addition to any family willing to put in their time and patience. Come and meet her at an adoption event. LTVA
Adopted: 11/06/06.

Abygail

Adopted!

Abygail Anka is our blue-blooded girl. She is a noble, black and red bred in from German lines. Abygail is 5 years old, and weighs about 90 lbs. She is looking for a family that will appreciate the fact that she is completely house and obedience trained. She is calm and good with very young childen. Abygail can live with other well-behaved dogs and cats. She loves to play chase, fetch and hide & seek like a puppy, but she knows what quiet time is all about. Any family will be proud to have Abygail Anka as a new addition. (WebWeasel's comment - This girl is one incredible GSD. She's even sweeter than you can imagine!)

Ace

Adopted!

Ace is a gorgeous young male GSD who is around 1 1/2 years old. He is a very friendly fellow who rides well in a car. He is a bit thin, but will be a handsome brute once he fills in. According to Doc B., he is a well muscled, good specimen of a dog. When we find out more about the cats and other things, we will post a more detailed description. We do know that he gets along well with other dogs and it appears that he is used to living inside of a house.

< -- (click on this picture to view larger images)

Ace #2

Adopted!

Ace #2 is a handsome black and tan male shepherd. He is about 10 months old and a very active boy. Ace will want to play tug, chase and fetch. Ace requires a family that will give him lots of time, attention and love. he is playful with other dogs, rides well in the car and is A-OK with fellow creatures of the feline persuasion. He met Phreddy, my 19 year old deaf, half blind, 3/4 senile cat and couldn't have cared less. Gave him a sniff or two and then walked away. He is a bit "humpy", but he just got neutered yesterday, so that particular little quirk should be subsiding quickly.

Addison

Adopted!

Addison is a cuddler. She is smart and adventurous. She has been well socialized. She has been around children, other large dogs, played outside and climbs stairs. During her 13 week life she has slept in a crate and pottied on paper so continuing that training should be a breeze. RTVA
Adopted: 02/01/08.

Adonis

Adopted!

Since I am tall, dark and VERY handsome, my foster mom decided to name me Adonis, but since I am a very casual fellow, you can call me Donnie. I was on the lam in WV when a nice lady stopped to help me and I hopped right into her car. Needless to say, I really do enjoy car rides! When at the dog park, my favorite activity is to fetch tennis balls. When at home, my favorite activity is to curl up around your feet, or if you are on the sofa, I will try to sit in your lap. What can I say - I am just a lover boy! They think I am around a year old. I can be a bit shy with some men at home, but at the dog park I do just fine with everyone. I can get along fine with both dogs and cats and I have not had a single accident in the house! They keep telling me that I am such a good guy that they cannot understand why no one was looking for me when I got lost. I know the words sit, down, shake and come, and also take treats ever so gently from your hand. Do you need a handsome, affectionate guy in your life? If so, I'm your dog! SLVA
Adopted: 08/03/04.

Afra

Adopted!

Afra is a very sweet German Shepherd out of east and west working lines, Afra has very strong play drives as well as food drive. She's an Obedience person's dream dog. With her drives, she is in need of a home that is active and will keep not only physically but mentally challenged. Even with her drives, Afra is wonderful with cats. With kids, she believes all good things come from kids that have either food or toys to play with. Afra is now 6 years old, spayed, tattooed, micro-chipped and up-to-date on all vaccines. She is being placed due to a change in family situation. ACAVA
Adopted: 04/03/07.

Aika

Adopted!

Aika is a gorgeous and very petite Black-and-Tan GSD. She is 4-5 years old. Aika is 64 pounds, but is a bit overweight and needs to lose some pounds. She is good with other dogs, including little ones. Aika is a very sweet and calm girl who is good with kids. She is also very good in the car. Aika is completely house-broken and does not need to be crated as she is extremely good loose in the house. All Aika wants is to lie near you and give you kisses. She walks very nicely on a leash, does not pull at all. She comes when called, even when she is loose in the yard. Aika is a very special girl and a magnificent foster dog who will make someone very happy some day.

Alaska

Adopted!

Alaska is a gorgeous 1 year old GSD female who's semi-floppy ear gives her a lot of character. She is a very smart girl and knows sit, down and come. She is super-sweet and loves the attention, she loves to give kisses too. Alaska is GREAT with other dogs. Because of her energy and enthusiasm she should go to a home with older kids and with big dogs only; she thinks my Yorkie is a toy. Everything for her is a game and she wants to play and play, but she will settle down next to you for a nap as well. Alaska is crate-trained. She will complaint for a few minutes but then quiets down. So far she seems house-broken as well. Alaska can jump over baby gates with no problem. She has a wonderful temperament overall. She is a great dog for a great home out there! Is it yours?

Alfia

Adopted!

Hi, all you GSD lovers, My name is Alfia. My brother is Joker. I weigh 17 pounds. I love to play with all my new toys that my foster mom gave to me. I love to snuggle, play, and run. I am still little, but when I hear something outside I bark. I am proud to be a good watch dog. I have been sad since my sister was adopted. I sometimes climb out of my pen and go over and lie on my foster mom's shirt. My foster mom is really proud of me because I have not chewed on anything when I get out of my pen. I am being fostered in Maryland and would love to have my own forever home. Please e-mail Patti406@lycos.com if you are interesed in little me. VGSR Tag # 1398. EPMD

Alice

Adopted!

Alice and Betty are two puppies that were found one rainy night by an animal control officer. They have some shepherd-like markings, so VGSR offered to find them all a good home. They are 6 weeks old and as cute as they can be. VGSR will only adopt puppies to homes where someone is home most of the day to raise them. AB&C will be at adoptions events starting March 1, but mail your application now. These wee ones are being fostered in Northern Virginia and won't be available for very long.

Alina

Adopted!

I can't say enough good things about this little girl who is petite and beautiful. Alina is very playful, both with other dogs and people. She loves her toys and will entertain herself. Alina has wonderful house manners, knows some obedience (sit, come), walks pretty well on a leash. She is so eager to learn new things, but also needs to be taught some things. As we learn more about Alina we will be updating the web site. Please visit her at adoption days. TDVA

Allie

Adopted!

Allie is such a lovable, sweet, sable GSD, a little over 2 years old. Allie has a sad story behind her. She came to us about a year ago, abused, abandoned, and thin, heartworm-positive, and a litter of pups that were never found. She pulled through her heartworm treatment; gained her much needed weight and learned to trust people again. Then a wonderful new Mom that just adored her adopted her, but Allie's new Mom passed away and her extended family decided they did not want Allie any more so she is back with us. We are the lucky ones who get all her kisses and cuddles now. Allie is not too sure of her large foster friends but she did live with a small male dog, and cats seem okay, too. She loves daily walks and toys are great fun as long as you play along with her. Allie would make any family an excellent companion. Have room in your heart and on the couch for Miss Allie? She is living in Virginia Beach. DBTVA

Allie #2

Adopted!

Allie is proof that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. She's playful, loyal, affectionate and listens well - a terrific all-around dog! She plays very well with dogs and people, but she also likes to just lie around just knowing that someone's nearby. She's got a clean bill of health now and can run and play with her buddies (canine or human), but most of the time Allie prefers to just sit around taking it easy - she's a very mellow German Shepherd. Allie knows sit and shake; is good on-leash, is very quiet and hops up into my truck as soon as I open the door for her. She's a wonderful companion on the road or at home. She would do fine in a house with another dog as a playmate or as the only dog in the house. Come see her at our Adoption Day - she'll be the one taking a nap! KBVA
Adopted: 03/19/05.

Allie Dawn

Adopted!

Hi! My name is Allie Dawn. I am a happy, petite, sable female GSD. I am quiet and gentle. Outdoors I love running and playing with the other dogs in my foster home. They all think I am a pretty nice dog. I am learning to live in a house and behave very well. I am not officially house-trained, but I have not had any accidents. I walk nicely on a lead and know how to sit and down. I also know how to roll over for belly rubs. KJVA

Amaru

Adopted!

Amaru is a black, spayed, female GSD, who is a total love. She is extremely smart, agile, petite, and would be a totally awesome agility candidate. Amaru loves to play with other dogs (especially at the dog park) and is a professional ball catcher. She knows her basic commands and is an excellent rider in the car. She is gentle and loves to give kisses. SLVA
Adopted: 07/03/05.

Amber

Adopted!

Amber is a gorgeous, solid black GSD that is no more than 5 months old. She came to us from a shelter in GA as she was due to be euthanized. She is a very sweet girl that wants to be with you and give you lots of kisses. Amber is great with other dogs, small or big. She is also good with cats, completely ignores the ones in her foster home. She is crate trained and almost housebroken.

Amelia

Adopted!

Amelia is a pretty sable, female, German Shepherd. She is only 7 months old and was found as a stray by Animal Control. We think she may have had a sad start to life because she is very shy. Amelia has a sweet face and lovely eyes that will melt your heart when you meet her. She wants to go with you for rides in the car and walks in the park. A basic obedience class, and lots of love, will give her confidence and skills. Amelia is ready to meet you and join your family.

Amp

Adopted!

Amp is a young female GSD who is approximately 8 months old and has a nice sturdy build. She gets along well with other dogs and is currently being crate trained. Since she is still just a pupper, she is still a bit "mouthy", but her foster dad is working with her on that issue. Amp will be spayed before she is available for adoption.

Angel

Adopted!

Angel, our Guardian, is an AKC registered two year old German Shepherd, long hair, Red, that was raised with my 8 year old Sheltie named Golak. Angel shall be deeply missed by my three sons. She is great with kids and my neighbors and still has the puppy spirit inside her. Angel is accustomed to 1/4 acre fenced-in back yard and being walked every day. She is an excellent walker and heels well whether you are on foot or roller blades. Angel is a very loving dog who is popular with the children in my neighborhood. She has the Guardian spirit where she slept in our home in the landing where she commanded the view of our back door and front door, keeping vigilant watch over her family. We are giving Angel to a good home due to her family going through a devastating divorce.

Angel #2

Adopted!

Hi! My Name is Angel. I am Maggie #2 and Cody's puppy. I was born with three legs, and am the runt of the litter. My foster mom is very proud of me! I am doing great walking with no problem, playing with my brothers and sister. I do not let them push me around, especially when it is time to eat. I have been eating puppy food for over a week, and also Mom's milk. I now have a puppy bark. I am now 6+ weeks old, and weigh 4 lbs. And I am cute as a button! I am black and tan with a little white on my paws. My foster mom is very happy with the way I get around with just three legs. I am really no differant than my brothers or sisters. Is there someone out there that would love me no matter that I was born with three legs?

Angel #4

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Angel, a petite little girl that craves human companionship, but mostly from children. I must have had a family before with children who were running late all the time, cause I will go get everyones shoes and put them by the back door. No I don't chew the shoes I'm just there to help out. I do enjoy being walked on a leash, playing with a soft squeaky toys, but my favorite is riding in a car. I just love this. My foster mom has given me the nickname "Radar". The reason for the nickname is because I bark loudly at the speeding cars going by. Foster mom is letting me know that this is not my job. I would love to meet you at the adoption days coming up. Please check the Current Events page and I will be at most of the adoption days. Remember to look low as I'm a very small girl. TDVA
Adopted: 05/10/05.

Angel #6

Adopted!

Angel is our first foster dog and we are lucky to have such a sweet little darling. She was found tied to a tree, and was very thin and neglected. She is a very quick learner and knows "sit", "down", "roll-over", “paw” and is learning “stay” and “come” we are running out of tricks to teach her! As she loves her food and lots of fun belly rubs, she will be easy to train. Angel is gentle on the leash (unless she’s heading to the car). She will try and herd you a little though, but she can be redirected easily. She is good with other dogs but does not know how to play with them yet. She does not have any ball drive, so we think exercise that has some training component in it would suite her best. She is quite low energy and will contently sleep at your feet for most of the day asking for an occasional belly rub. She loves car rides, seeing new places and meeting people. Angel still has some puppyish behavior such as jumping, mouthing and nipping when excited or when she really wants something, so she would not be good for a home with small children. This smart and pretty little girl would make a great snuggle-buddy and would love to soak up all the affection her forever family can provide. BSVA
Adopted: 09/03/07.

Angel #7

Adopted!

Angel is a sweet, love bug of a dog. She wants nothing more than to be with her humans. She is learning basic obedience, she is crated at night, and she house-trained. Angel is also learning to play with toys, although she still mixes up her dog toys with the kids toys. She has put on some much needed weight and was recently spayed. We don't have cats, but when we took her to meet some she was very interested, but it appeared to be in a playful way. She has a bit of separation anxiety and cries and barks when left alone, we are working on this little quirk. If you are looking for a loving companion dog, and are an approved adopter, contact Jeff and Pam at dogsalmosthome@yahoo.com to meet Angel #7. WJPMD

Anna
Sorry, no pictures...

Adopted!

This lovely lady is Anna. Prior to living with her previous owners, Anna has a not so nice history and is now looking for a safe and loving forever home. Her sad history is evident through her nerviousness around new people and her lack of confidence. But don't let this detract you from this sweet and loving girl, as it doesn't take long for her to warm up to you and velcro herself to your leg. She absolutely steals your heart when she hides behide your legs if she hears or sees someone coming that she doesn't know. This sweet girl is good with other dogs and cats, and previously lived with children. She has excellent manners and learns very quickly. Anna knows basic commands but needs to work on coming with distractions. She shows little interest in toys and would much rather prefer a tummy rub. Anna will need a forever home that will continue to socialize her to help her build her confidence. Anna enjoy long walks, playing with other dogs and playing in the park. If you are looking for a laid back and loving companion that will keep your feet warm and warm your heart, then Anna is your girl!

Annabelle

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Annabelle. I am a black-and-red purebred German Shepherd about 2 years old. (Please note: This picture does not do a girl justice. You need to see me in person.) A couple of months ago, I was taken from my home and dropped off on a road very unfamiliar to me. Thinking surely someone must have made a mistake, I waited patiently for several days. But they must have gotten lost because no one ever came back for me. I started walking and was found by animal control. Then came the news that VGSR had dispatched one of their volunteers to retrieve me from the shelter. When my foster mom came to pick me up, I was a little anxious about getting into her car. But not once did she seem to get lost and didn't stop until we arrived at her home. I'm very friendly with adults, children and other dogs. The first time I was taken to the park, I didn't know what all the fuss was about. All the dogs there were running with each other, talking and having a grand time. I decided to join in, and was immediately accepted as "one of them". Have you ever seen a tennis ball before? I hadn't until that day - what fun they are to catch and chase. My previous family didn't pay much attention to me, but my foster family discovered how smart I am and how quickly I learn. And the praise I receive from them makes me feel very special. Often, I just get hugs and kisses for doing nothing! I'd always been kept outside before and often food and water were scarce. But now, I stay inside and there is always fresh water available and regular meals. I'm allowed to sleep wherever I want. For now, I like the floor at the foot of the bed. Occasionally, during the night, I get up just to check and make sure that everyone is tucked in safely. Then I go back to sleep. Actually, I'm scared to be alone right now, because I never want to go through losing my family again. I like to be with people all the time, so a home with one stay-at-home member would be perfect for me, and I promise to be a loyal and loving companion.

Annie

Adopted!

Annie is a very energetic 9 month old black and tan female. She has just come in to foster care, so we're still getting to know her. Annie is an extremely friendly, very sweet girl who loves to play. She prefers to have fun with her human family but happily entertains herself with her squeaky toys. She seems to know her basic commands and is crate trained. While she still has the exuberance of a puppy, she seems to have outgrown the chewy puppy phase. Annie is up to date on all her shots and has been spayed. Please come meet Annie at the next Adoption Day!

< -- (click on this picture to view larger images)

Annie #3

Adopted!

Annie is a stunning, 15-month-old, sable, female, German Shepherd. She was turned in to the shelter because a child in the house was allergic. Annie is house- and crate-trained. She is reported to be good with children, although a little mouthy. Due to her love for the taste of cat, Annie must go to a feline-free home. Annie still acts like a puppy and is about 80 pounds, so her VGSR foster family is working with her on some basic skills. She is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

< -- (click on this picture to view larger images)

Annie #4

Adopted!

14-month-old Annie is people-focused and has high ball drive. That, along with her great nose, make her an excellent SAR or detection prospect. She was rescued along with 16 other shepherds by a Loudoun breeder from a neglect situation. She is well-socialized and highly confident. Annie is NOT afraid of thunderstorms or anything else. She is 90% house-trained, and her adopter will need to closely follow the techniques needed to housetrain a formerly kennel-kept dog that is unaccustomed to "doing her business" while on a leash. Because Annie jumps up when excited, she might not be suitable for a home with toddlers, but she would love to play with children over 6. She will probably not do well with cats, but would love another submissive dog to play with.

Apollo #2

Adopted!

Much to Apollo's surprise, his family dumped him at the shelter because they had no time for him. He was very worried about his fate, until VGSR volunteers came to take him home. He has been given a second chance. Apollo loves his new life in foster. There are new things to learn and plenty of new friends, including kids, dogs and cats. Apollo is an adult, purebred German Shepherd, that weighs about 90 pounds. He is a handsome black and red. When asked nicely, he will show you how he knows his sit-shake-down requests. He is house-trained, walks well on a leash and will learn the crate. Apollo is nervous about car rides. Once he learns this will take him to good places, not just the vet and the shelter, he will hop right in with you. This gentle giant only requires you give him you love, attention and a second chance. Apollo is being fostered in the Baltimore area.

Archie

Adopted!

Archie is a real cuddly kind of guy who likes to sit in your lap. He just does not realize that he is too big to fit very well. Archie loves to play with other dogs and has a blast running around at the dog park. He is a good boy in the house and rides very well in the car. He just had his first birthday on 12/15, so he still has some growing to do. Once Archie knows you, he is such an affectionate fellow. SLVA

Arco

Adopted!

Arco is a laid-back, eight-year-old house pet. He was conceived in Germany and born in the United States. His father was Vedor vom Fourniermuhlenbach and his mother was Mona vom Haus Burow. He is excellent around children, often used as a bean-bag by my daughter, and very loyal. He keeps to himself until it is time for his afternoon belly rub. He enjoy long walks and chasing tennis balls. He listens to commands and is a real joy to be around.

Aries

Adopted!

Aries came to the VGSR because his former owners were forced to leave their residence and they couldn’t take him or his sister, Artemis, with them. He is still a puppy at heart even though he is 2˝ years old. He is stand-offish at first, but will quickly warm up to you. He appeared indifferent toward the vet’s resident cat. He isn’t very interactive with his foster sisters or toys, but this could be because he has only been in foster care for four days. He likes to run, and run fast. A large fenced yard is highly recommended. He likes to be chased and play “chicken” with the whole family. He appears to know the commands sit and come, and would become the perfect gentleman, if taken through an obedience class. He is very lovable.
Adopted: 08/11/07.

Arlie

Adopted!

My name is Arlie. I am 1 year old. I have been spayed and am up-to-date on all of my vaccinations. I love kids, other dogs, people and cows. I have been living on a farm. I am house- and crate-trained. I was rescued by a nice lady who wanted me to have a better life. She taught me how to play ball. I am very fast. I might make a great agility dog, once trained. I would love to go to obedience class and learn as much as I can. I really want to please. KSSV

Arnold

Adopted!

Meet Arnold - he is a big sweetheart dressed up in a dog suit. It is a VERY good thing that he is as nice as he is big. Arnold is very tall and probably tips the scales at a bit over 100 lbs. He does not have much training beyond sit and HUP to load into the car (which he LOVES to do!) but he is very friendly to all he meets. Arnold gets along great with any other dog, large or small and is very friendly to people as well. He loves to play fetch with a basketball - that will give you an idea of his size. He is crate-trained, neutered and ready to be your faithful companion.

Arnold

Adopted!

Arnold was almost terminated when he was dropped at the animal shelter as a Holiday surrender. This sweet boy deserves better. Although Arnold is very thin looking, he already weighs 80 pounds. A handsome face and a great temperament made him a welcome addition to his VGSR foster family. He is only 2 years old, and still full of young dog energy. Arnold is playing with big dogs and little dogs, chasing balls and wrestling. Supposedly, he does well with older kids, but has never been around small children. He is house-trained and walks well on a leash. Arnold knows the basic sit, paw, and down commands, but would benefit from some formal training. He is a good listener, very attentive and well-behaved. Arnold will be very protective of his family, so he would do best in a home without small children. A family with German Shepherd experience would be preferred for this special dog. This stunning dog is available to meet you now. Arnold is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Artemis

Adopted!

Hi, I'm Artemis. I have good news and bad news. The good news first: I am a beautiful, big healthy girl who gets along with other dogs and remarkably well with the kitties in my foster home. I ride well in the car and love to play fetch. Sometimes I'm so eager to play fetch, you will find yourself otherwise occupied and suddenly you will have a ball in your lap, and I will be staring at you and the ball intensively! I am highly trainable, house-trained, and even though I probably don't need to, I sleep in a crate when nobody's home. On the exterior, I am the "perfect" dog. The bad news: Like many GSDs, I am very loyal to my family and am protective of my home and the people who live in it. I will need a family that understands that I need proper introductions to friends that come over, or may need to be sequestered separately from visitors completely. You see, I was adopted once from VGSR and found a loving family with two little boys that I adored playing with, and the family loved me, too. One day, a child came to visit, and I nipped him, and unfortunately was returned to the care of VGSR. I was temporarily fostered in another home, and nipped someone else who startled me. Now I have been labeled a "biter", and need a very special placement with someone committed to not letting me harm anyone again. I guess I love just a little *too much* and it's gotten me in trouble. Meanwhile, I'm staying at my original foster mom's home and am doing fantastic. I would never hurt my foster mom, foster dad, or any of my canine or feline friends here, because once I know you, I will love you for life (especially if you play ball with me) (Artemis never attacked her former family, even the small kids, only a visitor that she apparently thought was unwelcome). Please don't misunderstand. I will never be placed as a guard dog or in a home where I will be trained to attack. I just want a normal peaceful life with a family who understands I have a slightly special need, and is ready to accept the responsibility for a dog like me for the rest of my life. If you are an approved adopter, and you think you can provide Artemis with a home in which she not be in a situation to ever hurt anyone again, you are welcome to contact her foster mom at barbie@shepherdrescue.org. Although Artemis gets along fine with children, she will not be placed in a home with children, no exceptions. DBMD.

Ashley

Adopted!

Ashley is about 2 years old. She is small, only about 52 lbs. She will come when you call her or whistle for her, and shes knows how to sit, but she gets so excited about being paid attention to, its hard for her to hold it. She is a total cuddler, she loves to just lie next to you and be petted. She could care less about my cat and my two year old daughter. She's not a very "playful" dog when it comes to playing with humans... She will play with my GSD with no problems, but she is just now getting the idea of playing ball and tug of war. When my husband wrestles with our dog, she gets really excited, she just doesnt know what to do. She is almost housetrained, however if you dont see her at the door, or she is not crated when you go out she will have an accident. She is fine with kids, cats, other dogs. I believe she was abused in her old home, and gets very scared if you yell (even if its not at her) or grab her suddenly, etc. She also barks a lot at night, which is easly corrected by crating her. She isn't "crate trained" per se, but doesn't have any problems when put in one. She rides GREAT in a car. She is the perfect road companion. She just sits there and looks out the window. She and Sabre did get loose one time, and all I had to do was call her and she came running home from down the street. She is a GREAT dog, and just needs a loving family to teach her how to trust again, and give her all the hugs and pettings she craves.

Ashley #2

Adopted!

This is Ashley. A quiet observer at the moment with soft, deep handsome expressions. One of Savanah's pups, he will be ready to go to her forever home in early June.

Asia

Adopted!

Asia is a 5-month-old, solid black little girl. She is super-sweet and likes to be with you. She is great with other dogs. It looks like she may be a mix or it is because she is so extremely thin, as you can see in one of her pictures, that her body looks underweight right now. She does have a gorgeous GSD face however. Asia is an active and very agile little girl. As little as she is, she can jump up on my bed like nothing. She is crate- and house-trained. Asia has already been spayed and is waiting for a home to call her own. She is being fostered in Maryland. VCMD
Adopted: 05/30/04.

Athenia

Adopted!

Athenia wandered off from her home in Southern Maryland and was found several weeks later by the Animal Shelter. The parents decided that since the children presumed she was dead that they did not want to bring her back from the animal shelter and upset the children. Athenia is a wonderfully friendly girl. She loves bellyrubs, lying at your feet and just being with people. She even loves playing with her foster mom's three cats. She was friendly with the dogs at the vet, was fantastic throughout her vet exam and even took her biscuit nicely from the doctor. She is obedience trained and responds well to commands. She walks nicely on a leash and looks forward to her two mile walks everyday. Athenia may be 12 years young, but she still has a lot of spunk left.

Atilla

Adopted!

HI!!! My name is Atilla. I am a very beautiful, happy-go-lucky puppy. I am 7 months old, and FULL of energy. I also have LOTS and LOTS of love to give. I am really just an oversized lap dog. I need obedience training from the very beginning. I love playing with my foster brothers and my foster mom and dad. I am trying to learn how to play games other than tug of war. I bond very quickly and need a very loving and active family of my very own. My foster mom says that my puppy dog eyes just melt her heart. DGVA

Audra

Adopted!

Audra is a 1-2 year old female. She's about 55 lbs., not underweight, but very fine-boned for a GSD. Don't read "fine-boned" and think delicate - Audra is anything but delicate. She is a very active dog, and will be placed only with someone who is looking for a canine to "do" something with - like agility, obedience, etc. She has a boundless amount of energy - almost enough qualify her as a dog that needs a job, but lacks the focus a working dog needs. Audra is great with other dogs, good with kids (although would easily knock pre-teens over with her exuberance), and is CAT FRIENDLY!! She seems to be house-trained, and is crate-trained in her foster home. Without proper day-to-day stimulation, Audra becomes bored and will become whiney. As long as she is active and tired, she is a happy dog. If you are looking for more than just a "pet" - maybe a jogging partner, or a dog with enough drive to train to do a certain discipline, Audra is your girl!. If you are a preapproved adopter, and would like more information about Audra, please contact her foster mom at barbie@shepherdrescue.org if you have any questions. DBMD

Austin

Adopted!

Austin is a cuddler. He is smart and adventurous. He has been well socialized. He has been around children, other large dogs, played outside and climbs stairs. During his 8 week life he has slept in a crate and pottied on paper so continuing that training should be a breeze. DGVA

Ava

Adopted!

Ava is a beautiful long haired GSD with a simply gorgeous black mask. She is lively, just waiting for the "let's go" signal! Ava is a spayed 6-year-old female who lives with Champ, so she knows how to get along with other dogs. Ava's owner is having to give her up as the result of a divorce. She currently lives on a busy street, but knows her boundaries and will not run away. Ava just craves attention. She will sit at your feet patiently waiting for you to focus on her. Give her a few well deserved strokes and she's off doing her thing again. It is not known how Ava is with cats, but her owner suspects she would be OK. If you want an active older dog, then Ava would love to become a member of your family!

Axel

Adopted!

Axel is a handsome 1-year-old, 75-lb. GSD with a beautiful sable coat and big light-brown eyes that radiate intelligence and curiousity about the world around him. Axel is very athletic, and one of his favorite activities is swimming and fetching sticks and balls thrown into Lake Frank and Rock Creek near his foster home in Rockville, MD. Axel is an exuberant rather than a graceful swimmer; he leaps into the water with great gusto, often sticking his head underwater and barreling along like a submarine to reach sticks thrown for him. Axel has been started on basic obedience commands, and he is looking for a person who is interested in dog training and taking a dog to school. Axel has great potential to be an outstanding competitive obedience and agility dog, and he would like to find a home that enjoys participating in these kinds of activities. Axel is house-trained and crate-trained, plays well with other dogs, loves cats and occasionally chases them and gives them a mouth massage, and adores people he knows. He can be a little shy with people he does not know, so he is looking for a person who will take him everywhere and socialize him with everyone in the great wide world. If strangers give him pieces of cheese or liver, Axel warms up quickly and is eager to play fetch, get a belly rub, or go for a hike. If you are an active, outdoorsy person with an interest in competing in various K-9 sports, this sweet boy may be the one for you! WMMD

Axel #2

Adopted!

Axel is a very handsome, long-haired GSD. He just wants to love and be loved. He gets along great with the five dogs he is living with, but he is too rough with cats and smaller dogs. He is very smart and will pick up on obedience training quickly. He loves to play with all of the toys and any of the dogs that will play. He can be a little to rough for smaller children as he is still very much puppy. Axel will be attending some of the Northern Virginia adoption events. THVA

Axel #3

Adopted!

Axel isn't quite a year old according to the paperwork that came with him. He was given up by the owner who realized he didn't have time to give this dog and training and socialization that he needs. The good news is that Axel has been well cared for and well treated by his owners. The bad news is that he hasn't had much socialization with strangers. He has been in two homes prior to coming into rescue, so he doesn't have any long term experience with anyone yet. He has the biggest and fiercest bark I've ever heard from a German Shepherd. It's an intimidating bark, he knows it, and he uses it when he's scared. He's not aggressive, but he is distrustful and scared of strangers even though he is craving attention and affection. However, he gets over his fear and warms up pretty quickly and then is very affectionate and even submissive, as a dog his age should be. There were children in the household that he came from and he was fine with them. He had been a housedog at one time, but has been living outside for a while now, so I can't vouch for his house manners at this time. He's a gorgeous young dog, but he is going to need an experienced handler who has time to work with him. He is not an off-the-shelf suburban family dog, so please be realistic about your own situation before inquiring about Axel. You can contact Axel's foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. JBVA

Baby #3

Adopted!

This is our Virginia Beach "Baby" and what a little beauty. Baby is a two-year-old, AKC-registered, long-haired, black-and-tan female. Her owner does not have enough time for both of her GSD's, plus the girls are arguing alot these days. She is great in the house, knows basic obedience, give beautiful little kisses and is quite the lady. Baby is fully grown and a perfect weight - under 60 lb. She loves toys from balls to squeaky ones and a loves to involve her family in all she does. Baby is okay with children but would prefer an adult home so she can be the baby. We are not too sure of her attitude toward cats. Wouldn't you love to take this Baby home?

Baby #4
Better pictures coming soon...

Adopted!

Baby is a beautiful red-and-black GSD. At 7 months old, she is all puppy that wants any attention she can get. She is big for her age, and will continue to grow, plus at 60 pounds she still thinks she is a lap dog and loves to give kisses. Baby is comfortable running around outside or curling up with you on the couch. She knows some basic commands, is somewhat house-trained, is working on crate training, and learning not to pull when on the leash. She will need a little more obedience training. Baby enjoys wrestling with her big foster sister and her smaller foster brother. In fact, Baby has not met a dog or person she didn't like. She will need a family that can give her the love and attention she needs. Baby is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Baby #5

Adopted!

Yes sir - she's our Baby, No Sir, don't mean maybe, Yes sir, she's our Baby Dog! Baby could not possibly be a sweeter little pooch. She is around 9 months old, up to date on her vaccines, gets along well with other dogs AND CATS, and is a very affectionate girl. She rides very well in the car and plays well with others at the local dog park. In the crate the only sound she makes is the thwack thwack thwack of her tail wagging! This little sweetheart won't be available for long!

Baby Girl

Adopted!

Baby Girl is a lovely little sable German Shepherd. She weighs about 63 lbs. and around 4.5 years of age. What a sweetheart who actually smiles with all teeth showing - a little intimidating when you first met her but her tail is wagging full swing. According to Baby Girl's owner, her real name is Lady but she doesn't know that. All her life she has been called Baby or Pretty Girl. Her Mom could not take her along when she divorced, so Baby is now with us. She has lived with other dogs; cats and children are fine, too. She's spayed and microchipped. And boy, does she love to talk in that Sheppy voice like she is having a conversation with you. She has excellent house manners, is house-trained, and loves to be brushed and walked. Her walking collar is called her necklace but she gives you a real hard time when you try to get it on with all her excitement. She loves the beach and swimming in the water without her lead, but runs with soggy exuberance right back to her owner. Bones and squeaky toys are her favorite, and she is an expert at breaking the squeaks in a very short time. Baby Girl needs a family that she can devote her life to with kisses, loyalty and protection if needed. DBTVA Tag # 954

Adopted!

Hi..my name is Baby Jane. I am 2-3 months old. I am a big girl weighing about 20 lbs., already. I am very very smart and take my training very seriously. I am crate-trained and house-trained already. I love to work on my commands and get those GREAT treats. I like to play with other dogs and I like my foster mom a lot, too. I am just now deciding which toys I like best and I think it is called a ball. I love to see it fly through the air and run and get it. My foster mom keeps wanting it back, though. I guess she likes it too. My mom and dad both got real real sick and could no longer care for me. Though I like my ball, I would really really LOVE a forever home with my very own humans. DGVA

Balboa

Adopted!

OK people - I would like to know why I have not been adopted yet. I have been patiently waiting and waiting. My coat is now soft and beautiful and I have even gained a little weight. My absolute favorite thing in the world to do is go to the dog park and play fetch. I have even started catching Frisbees, too. Since I am so athletic (I can run like a deer) I have unlimited potential! My only bad habit is that I get very excited and sing at the top of my voice when someone tries to leave the house without me. Especially if they are taking another dog and leaving me behind! That is just so NOT fair. My foster folks call me either Billy or Balley Girl - we think Balboa sounds like a boy's name. For heaven's sake, even the cat that lives here likes me! So, who wants a dog that can sing? My resume also includes sit, shake, high-five, down, and Microsoft Word. (Just kiddin' about Word! - or am I ?). SLVA

Adopted!

Bandit is an eight year old gentleman who is patiently waiting on someone to adore him as much as he will adore them. He is a very faithful companion that will sit patiently by your feet to keep you good company. He will also climb right in your lap if you invite him up onto the sofa. At 85 pounds, he is a very impressive lap dog! Bandit LOVES to ride in the car and also makes a very trustworthy hiking partner. He passed the cat test just fine with PeeWee, but seems to be a little too interested in Kiss, the reserve test cat. This dog idolizes men and would like nothing better than to have one to call his own. He is very friendly to all he meets whether it is a man, woman, child or dog. He has a calm, gentle disposition and is very eager to be a good boy. He would truly like to be your good boy. Please consider giving a good home to this fine dog who has such a wonderful heart.

Hi, my name is Bandit and I am the boss dog of this gang of puppies here in the pen. I am around 3 months old, and I like to take charge of my siblings, Brandi, Nico, Kacey, Fawn, Black Bear and Jessica. Someone has to be in charge, don't they? More information will be posted about all of us as soon as our new foster mom gets to know us. EPMD

Bandit #3

Adopted!

Bandit is an 8-year-old, neutered male GSD with a beautiful, thick, plush coat. He is healthy, playful, good with other dogs, and well-behaved indoors. Bandit was dumped by his prior owner who will soon be graduating from medical school and found it no longer convenient to have a dog. Imagine, devoting your entire life to a person, through college and med school, lying by his side when he was studying, waiting patiently for him to come home after long days, and then being unceremoniously dumped in your golden years, in spite of the fact that you had done nothing wrong. Apparently this guy didn't take, or failed, a class in ethics. This dog deserves better. Bandit, however, is well-adjusted, still trusts people, and will gladly give his love to someone more deserving. Bandit loves to go to the dog park and he plays very well with other dogs. In his current foster home he is playing with one- and two-year-old dogs, and enjoying every minute of it. You'd have to look at his paperwork to know that he is 8 years old. Bandit is good with kids, loves to play ball, and seems to know the following commands: sit, down, crawl, high five, shake left, shake right. We still don't know how he is with cats. At his first outing he was comfortable in a strange situation with new people and dogs. This dog is a gem. You can contact Bandit's foster home at vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. JBVA

He loves people and follows us around everywhere. He has good manners, lying down when we are eating or watching TV. He has no food aggression and loves cheese. It was hard to get clear pictures of Bear because he is in perpetual motion. Bear is full of all puppy play and energy. He does well with other dogs and is eager to learn some tricks. Bear also wants to snuggle and be part of a loving family. Bear will be completely devoted to anyone that shows him love.

Bear #3

Adopted!

My name is Bear, and my foster folks, silly as it sounds, call me Berry-Bear. I am a young adult, male GSD. Get this - I am completely house-broken and do not need to be crated while you are at work! I do not chew, I am a terrific, quiet rider in the car, I do not try to jump the fence and I only get on the sofa when I receive an invitation to jump up! Heck, I even get along great with cats! What more could you want in a dog? I have already been neutered, and am up to date on my shots (ouch!). I get along just fine with ALL other dogs and have even heard that I am "submissive" to other dogs. Don't know what that means, but I hope it is a good thing. Did I mention that I am also a wicked good catcher? I can nail a milkbone in the air with amazing accuracy! Please consider making me part of your family, I have been in foster care long enough. I keep getting overlooked and I can't figure out why! My foster folks tell me that I am one of the easiest foster dogs that they have ever had live with them. Doesn't that count for something? Bear is being fostered in Northern Virginia.

Bear #4

Adopted!

My name is (Black) Bear and I am new to VGSR. I was born on Dec 1, 2003, and weigh about 35 lbs. I have been in my foster home for two days and have been taught how to walk on a leash, although I still don't like it at times as I had never been on a leash in my life. I am not shy and like to play with all the dogs and children here. I am going to learn about cats sometime this week. I am learning the sit command and have picked that up very well. I will keep you updated on my progress. I am being fostered in the Shenandoah Valley. RDVA

Bear #5

Adopted!

Bear is about 2.5 years old, and 84 lbs of love. He is completely house-trained and loves to sprawl out on his bed whenever he can. Bear will sit, shake, and lie down. Bear may get a little nervous around new dogs, but is living fine with his two foster sisters. He's very vocal with excitement when it's time to go for a walk. He does very well on leash. He does not, however, enjoy the company of cats, so a home without them would be best. Bear is the type that is happy to be wherever you are, but does not need to be under your feet 24/7. He's gives out little kisses, thanking you for his dinner. Bear is a loving, sweet, gentle, low maintenance prince of a dog. He would be perfect for a young family with children or an older family without. Bear is being fostered in Virginia Beach. DBTVA Tag 716
Adopted: 12/16/04.

Bear #6

Adopted!

Bear is a handsome, AKC-registered, 7-year-old, male GSD that undeservedly was kenneled outside until rescued by VGSR. Although his previous owners have children (and cats), Bear is doing well in a quiet foster home with a pack of 2 dogs and 1 person, so he would most likely do better in a similar situation to his foster home. He loves car rides (rides well) and loves walks - they don't have to be long, but he LOVES them. He is house-trained, crate-trained, and is a polite dog in the house (except for a few drinks from the toilet). Bear bonds quickly and will follow you from room to room. He gets along with other dogs, but needs to be reined in around small dogs. He is uncertain in new situations and much prefers to approach people on his own terms. Bear needs someone w
