Welcome to Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, 100% volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of the German Shepherd Dog. We serve Virginia and the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, and provide a valuable service by finding good homes for the German Shepherd Dogs in our care. In the seven plus years that we have been in existence, we have found homes for over 2,400 deserving dogs, 298 in 2008 alone. We are currently enlisting active volunteers to help with the task of placing some really wonderful, but homeless, German Shepherd Dogs into loving homes in which both the dogs and their humans thrive and grow. If you would like to become actively involved in our mission, please contact VGSR through the address or phone number listed at the bottom of this page or click on Volunteers to download an application to volunteer.

Help make VGSR the Number 1 Rescue in the United States!!! Go to The Animal Rescue Site to place your vote for Virginia German Shepherd Rescue. Thanks for your support!!!

The tragic foreclosure epidemic has left some absolutely fantastic dogs rewarded for their love and loyalty by being abandoned or dumped at shelters when their humans moved into quarters where dogs are unwelcome. If you have adopted from VGSR in the past, you are very likely qualified to foster a dog in need of a home. Won't you please consider fostering a dog, and in doing so, save a life?

VGSR is being overrun with great dogs seeking their "forever" homes. Good foster homes are being sought throughout Virginia, especially in the Tidewater area. If you have room in your heart and your home for one of these great dogs, please contact us as soon as possible. Our address is at the bottom of this page. Thank you for considering this possibility.

Want to know why we do what we do??? Click on the video below. It should make it absolutely crystal clear.

Please, won't you open your heart and your wallet, if not your home, to help us help these wonderful dogs find the loving homes they so richly deserve? Your donations are very much appreciated by VGSR, and by the dogs that have found their "forever" homes with your help. Thank you very much for your ongoing support for our mission.

Ten Great Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog

  1. House-trained - Older dogs are house-trained. You won't have to go through the difficult stage(s) of teaching a puppy house manners, and mopping or cleaning up after accidents.

  2. Won't chew inappropriate items - Older dogs are not teething puppies, and won't chew your shoes and furniture while growing up.

  3. Focus to learn - Older dogs can focus well because they've mellowed. Therefore, they learn quickly.

  4. Know what "no" means - Older dogs have learned what "no" means. If they hadn't learned it, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs.

  5. Settle in with the "pack" - Older dogs settle in easily, because they've learned what it takes to get along with others and become part of a pack.

  6. Good at giving love - Older dogs are good at giving love, once they get into their new, loving home. They are ever so grateful for the second chance they've been given.

  7. WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get: Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality. Puppies can grow up to be quite different from what they seemed at first.

  8. Instant companions - Older dogs are instant companions, ready for hiking, car trips, and other things you like to do.

  9. Time for yourself - Older dogs leave you time for yourself, because they don't make the kinds of demands on your time and attention that puppies and young dogs do.

  10. A good night's sleep - Older dogs let you get a good night's sleep because they're accustomed to human schedules and don't generally need nighttime feedings, comforting, or bathroom breaks.

Virginia German Shepherd Rescue frequently has several senior dogs that are available for adoption. Won't you give these great dogs a good look? They're such wonderful companions and would be ever so grateful for a second chance to love and to be an integral part of your family. Please go to our Available GSDs page and check these sweethearts out.

Nieko #2 Needs Your Help!!!

Nieko’s Story

My name is Nieko and I need your help. I am a very sweet and loving big boy. My foster mom and dad call me the "Gentle Giant". I have severe hip dysplasia and I’m told I need a hip replacement. I don’t get to do all of the things I love to do like chase my favorite ball and go for long walks. I need pain killers just so I can function from day to day. The pain pills make me sick, so I have to take meds for that, too. My pain is getting worse and my foster mom and dad are having a hard time just getting me out for the little bit of exercise I need. I am on a special diet because I’m overweight, but I’m a really good sport about it because I want to get better soon. I do love the occasional treat though! I love everyone. My foster mom says I have the kindest heart and the most beautiful brown eyes that you will ever see. Sometimes my mom gets very sad because she can just see the pain in my eyes and there is nothing she can do for me, I need to hurry and get my surgery so mom won’t be sad any more. Besides my mom and dad I have three human brothers and sisters that can’t wait to get outside and run and romp with me. When I don’t feel so good my sister covers me up with a blanket and lies in the floor with me until I feel better. She is my guardian angel. If you could help me get my hip surgery, that would be great. It sounds a little scary, but my foster family loves me very much and takes really good care of me. I am very happy but I just want to feel better so I can play more. Nothing makes me happier than chasing my ball.

Nieko, the gentle giant with lion’s feet, has an extremely playful yet calm disposition. This poor guy got dumped at the Williamsburg humane society a few weeks ago when his previous owners downsized to an apartment and decided to keep their other two dogs and leave Nieko behind. Apparently Nieko was just too big for the apartment. Sadly, it was those very owners who let him become some twenty pounds overweight, a condition that helped create a severe case of hip dysplasia. His left femur rests above the hip because its socket has degenerated and can no longer hold the leg in place. Despite what must be an extremely painful condition, Nieko loves brief walks outside and goes up and down a few stairs as needed. He desperately wants to run and play fetch, throwing to his humans anything they might throw back at him for a quick game: tennis balls, pine cones, rocks, sticks, plastic baseball bats, squeaky toys, and stuffed animals. He doesn’t let anything keep him down! Nieko is trustworthy in the house and great with dogs and people of all ages. If you place a high value on a dog’s friendship and have a loving home and even a ranch-style house, Nieko won’t disappoint. This gorgeous guy will only go to a very special home! Is that home yours? dGRKVA
