How Can You Help?

VGSR is a privately funded all-volunteer organization, who relies heavily on public interest and support. Your generous help will assist us with our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving, forever homes for wonderful and deserving dogs in need. The money that is donated is put to great use - even a few dollars can help the wonderful dogs that are in VGSR's care. Everything you give us, large or small, will go towards saving another dog's life. 100% of all donations are used for the dogs.

Equally as important as financial support is the donations of goods and your TIME! Become an active VGSR volunteer and have direct contact with our wonderful dogs. On behalf of the dogs and puppies whose lives you continue to improve - thank you!

We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. All donations are considered tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

Donate by Check:

Please send your check to:

Donate at an Adoption Event:

Come visit us at one of our many adoption events - meet some of our great dogs and wonderful volunteers and add a little something to our donation jar! Cash or checks are welcome.

Employer Matching Fund Programs:

Your donation to VGSR may be able to go even further with a matching gift from your employer. Many companies have charitable programs which "match" their employees' charitable contributions by doubling or even tripling their gift with a donation from the company. Please find out if your employer has such a program. You may be able to help the dogs more than you thought!

Sponsor a Specific Dog:

We have many dogs that have special needs and/or expensive vet bills. Some have to go through heartworm treatment; some come to us with parasites, mange, or illnesses/injuries that were not properly taken care of. Our adoption fees don't come close to paying for the care of these dogs. Sponsoring a dog with a monetary donation will help VGSR continue to save dogs that may need a little extra TLC. We thank you and our dogs thank you, also.

Help with our Goods Wish List:

Most of our dogs come to us with nothing - not even a collar to call their own. So, if you see a good sale on collars, balls, toys or treats at the local pet store, please think about buying a couple of extra ones to donate to our good cause. Your donation will help us care for a needy GSD. The following items are most appreciated:

  • Flea and Tick Control products
  • Heartworm Preventative products
  • Petsmart, Petco or other pet store gift cards
  • Heavy duty dog toys, balls, bones, etc. (large)
  • Dog treats, biscuits
  • Premium quality dog food
  • Collars and leashes
  • Grooming supplies such as shampoo, brushes, etc.
  • Large and extra large Vari-kennels or wire crates
  • Dog dishes (metal and ceramic)
  • Supplies such as towels, rugs and bedding
  • Rolls of postage stamps (for mailings)

  • Veterinary services
  • Printing services
  • Grooming services
  • Fundraising services
  • Advertising in various media

Special Activities:

  • Join us for one or more of our special fundraising activities throughout the year - (check our Current Events page). Play, sponsor, donate and/or take part in an activity (including the upcoming Golf Tournament/Auction) and treat yourself to a great outing while helping our remarkable dogs.

In addition to donations which support our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving, forever homes for wonderful and deserving dogs in need, VGSR has three specialized Funds described below:

Ginger's Fund

Ginger's Fund was created in memory of Sheila G., a long-time VGSR volunteer. This fund, named after one of Sheila's favorite fosters, is used specifically to help some of the old, the sick or the special needs dogs who come into VGSR's care. As you would expect, these dogs may have higher medical and rehabilitative costs and require extended stays in foster care before they are ready for adoption.

Josie's Fund

Josie's fund provides financial assistance for the care of pets whose owners, because of special circumstances, are unable to afford the expense (i.e. spay/neuter; food; medical care; boarding).  Examples of support this fund has provided include helping when short term support was needed due to job/income loss; assisting when a divorce and temporary move necessitated boarding the dog; supporting a woman who was forced to move to a shelter and providing for the dog until she was back on her feet; or providing for a dog when a family was having a major medical issue and paying for dog walkers, etc.

Canine Medical Advocacy Fund

The Canine Medical Advocacy Fund was established to support special needs dogs who have been medically and/or physically neglected.  More details regarding the fund are available on VGSR's Facebook Cause page

If you should choose to donate to one or more of these very worthy funds, please be sure to indicate the Fund's name (Ginger, Josie or Canine Medical Advocacy Fund) somewhere on your donation.  Contributions may be mailed to our P.O. Box (P.O. Box 126, Sterling, Virginia 20167) or through Paypal (please see above) or for the Medical Advocacy Fund through our Facebook page.  On behalf of all our volunteers and the many dogs who will be helped by your donation, thank you so much.

Are you (or do you know of someone) thinking of selling or trading in that old car, boat, motorcycle or RV?  Why not donate it and save the hassle?

VGSR can take vehicles as donations.  VGSR can really use the donation and we will provide you with a tax-deductible donation receipt.  It's easy to do.  With one phone call to (703) 574-2206, a professionally licensed, bonded and insured towing company will pick up the vehicle within 3 to 4 days.  VGSR will receive 70% of the net proceeds and you will avoid the hassles of selling it yourself.

Download a donation form to donate a vehicle to VGSR. (26k PDF file - use Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view and print the form) and e-mail it to Bruce Sklar at bruce.sklar@gmail.com Or complete the online form.
