Meet Tuffy... who is really not "tough" at all!

He is a small, sweet Shepherd who is still a bit shy in his new surroundings.  Tuffy was picked up as a stray by Animal Control and though it appears he had an owner at some point, he was probably left outside to fend for himself most of his life.  Living in the house may be new to him and he has definitely decided he likes being inside!  He rarely wants to go out and is still learning what walks are all about.  He doesn't pull, and is a bit fearful of new people and places.  He likes to follow my dog Hans around, seeming to gain confidence from his presence.

Tuffy is relatively low energy and prefers to lie around most of the time on his comfy doggie bed.  He has some skin issues that need work.  He may have been severely stressed in the Shelter, because he has chewed on his tail to the point it is infected with both yeast and bacteria.  He is on medication for that problem, as well as some bald patches on his legs and a very itchy coat!  Two soothing oatmeal baths have helped and we have him on a special food right now but the vet doesn't think this problem is related to allergies, just needs some good care and time to heal.

Tuffy gets along with all the dogs he has met.  He likes Hans and attempts to initiate play but Hans is old and grumpy and is not at all interested.  Has not met small dogs or cats yet so that is an unknown.

UPDATE 10/07/14  Tuffy has settled in well in his new foster home.  He has even discovered that he knows how to bark!  It took him a few weeks to voice his opinions.  He is a quiet dog though, with still a fairly low key personality.   He has free roam of the home with his pal, Hans, whom he gets along with very well.  He is very reliable inside the house and is not destructive.  However, if given the opportunity, will try to "counter-surf" on occasion.

He has filled out nicely and now weighs 82 lbs.  No longer the little skinny boy he once was.  He is a very handsome dog, with a nice short coat.  Very little shedding from this guy!   He does well with all dogs, even small ones. He just tries to sniff and get to know them, no aggression noted.  Tuffy came into the Rescue with 2 different tick-borne diseases, Lyme and Ehrlichia, which have both been treated successfully with antibiotics.

He was also diagnosed with a faint heart murmur.  It idoes not cause him any problems, and the vet recommendation is just to monitor it in the future.  No intervention is needed at this time.

Our greatest concern at this time is the discovery of a small peri-anal fistula, which is being treated with an antibiotic and daily antiseptic cleansing.  We are hoping this problem will resolve with the given treatment, but recurrence is possible in the future.

Updates will be posted on his condition after we see how he responds to the treatments.
