October 2014 update from Amelia’s foster mom:

Miss Amelia has been with me for about a month (she moved to my home from her original foster home because she and her canine foster brother did not see eye to eye) and she has assimilated quickly and well. She is happy, healthy, and enjoys sharing her home with two big, boisterous GSD foster brothers. Her absolute favorite activity is begging, and she is a pro! She also enjoys taking leisurely strolls, chasing squirrels, following me around, napping, gnawing on a meaty marrow bone, and snuggle time. Amelia and her needy foster brother love to vie for my attention and give each other (and me) kisses. Amelia has some endearing physical traits: bright, inquisitive eyes; huge, alert ears; gigantic paws (even bigger than my 105-pound male GSD!); super soft fur that doesn’t seem to shed as much as the other GSDs in my house; a distinguished salt & pepper muzzle; and a short, stocky build. She doesn’t bark much, so she’d probably be good in apartments, condos, and townhomes, but she does snore like a champ.

In the past, she has had some separation anxiety. However, she seems to take comfort in her foster brothers and hasn’t had a problem since settling in here. Amelia is currently on a daily joint supplement and anti-anxiety medication, but we are beginning to wean her off of the anxiety medication since she is doing so well. Being crated seems to trigger her anxiety, so she has the run of the house now. Like many dogs, she is terrified of thunder storms.

In her time with me, Amelia has been nothing but sweet and loving. She has attended several adoption events and interacted well with adults, children, and other dogs. She does have a prey drive so cats are likely out of the question for her. I think she'd do best in a home without small children or small dogs. Ideally, Amelia's forever home will include another low-key dog to help her feel safe when her people aren't around.

This little princess deserves to be the queen of the castle. Are you her prince?

Hi, everyone! My name is Amelia, sometimes called Bedelia, and I have landed in a really good place. I’m 9-1/2 years and after being tied to a tree for several years, I think I’ve earned it. The outside world is very exciting, but there are some scary things, too, like the noises from dump trucks and school buses. My mom says I’ll get used to them. I’m very friendly and calm and like to see new places and meet new people. However, I don’t like cats. I am a bit dominant and do better with submissive dogs.

There have been a lot of adjustments between living outside and being inside, but it’s like a dream come true. I have my very own room and toys and tennis balls I love to tear apart. Mom is teaching me to play catch and bring the ball which is kind of fun but I like running away with the ball all to myself. The food is really good, too, and plenty of it. Now that I’ve recovered from my surgery, I love going on walks with my mom and she says I’m very polite and easy going. I know several commands, like heel and sit when we get to a corner, and come and stay. I also learned not to pace at dinner time and go sit in my room to wait for it there. I enjoy laying on my bed, watching TV and being brushed, and trying to get used to our other roommate who wasn’t very nice to me when I arrived.

I’m really looking forward to spending the rest of my senior years with someone who enjoys walking and tossing a tennis ball around. So, if you’re someone who likes to take leisurely walks and play ball and are looking for someone to share those experiences, give me a chance. Don’t be put off by my age. I’ve got a whole new life to live and lots of new things to sniff and find out about.
